About the job

Requirements
  • Have strong programming and debugging skills and a track record of turning technical ideas into working software.
  • Have experience with reinforcement learning, model evaluations, post-training, or other applied machine learning research.
  • Have experience building tool-using agents, reward functions, or automated evaluation systems.
  • Be able to form clear hypotheses, design useful experiments, and distinguish meaningful results from noise or evaluation errors.
  • Work independently on ambiguous problems and make practical decisions about what to build or test next.
  • Stay close to the implementation and be able to explain what was built, what failed, and what was learned.
  • Communicate progress clearly and collaborate with people across research, software, and hardware.
  • Care about developing safe, beneficial artificial intelligence.
Responsibilities
  • Build reinforcement learning environments and evaluations for tasks such as register-transfer-level generation, design verification, and physical design optimization.
  • Develop and test approaches that help models use chip-design tools and improve power, performance, and area while preserving correctness.
  • Design experiments, establish baselines, and measure whether improvements hold up on new tasks and designs.
  • Investigate failures across model behavior, rewards, evaluation tools, and experiment infrastructure.
  • Improve iteration speed through better tooling, faster evaluations, and proxy rewards that reflect the outcomes the team cares about.
  • Turn successful experiments into reusable research code and training workflows, working closely with researchers and engineers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with experiment orchestration, distributed training, or research infrastructure.
  • Experience with register-transfer-level design, Verilog/SystemVerilog, electronic design automation tools, formal verification, or chip-design automation.
  • Prior chip-design experience is helpful, though the domain can be learned alongside the team’s hardware specialists.

About the company

OpenAI researches and builds artificial intelligence models and turns them into products for people, developers, and businesses, with a stated mission of making sure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Its launch of ChatGPT in 2022 brought generative AI into everyday use. People use ChatGPT to ask questions, write, code, and analyze files, developers build OpenAI's models into their own apps through its API, and its Codex agent works through coding tasks on its own. OpenAI earns money from ChatGPT subscriptions, business plans, and API usage. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others co-founded it in 2015; it is based in San Francisco and overseen by a nonprofit, the OpenAI Foundation.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are compounding: OpenAI's yearly revenue pace doubled from $24 billion in March 2026 to nearly $50 billion in September.
  • Equity turns into cash regularly: staff sold $7 billion of shares in August 2026, after $6.6 billion in October 2025.
  • Room to grow: OpenAI plans to nearly double staff to 8,000 by year-end and listed 816 openings in October 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Its chief rival pulled ahead: Claude maker Anthropic's $965 billion valuation in May 2026 topped OpenAI's $852 billion.
  • Profits are years away: OpenAI's own forecast, reported in September 2026, shows $278 billion of cash burn through 2030.
  • Expect leadership churn: 15 senior leaders, including the revenue and applications chiefs, left OpenAI between January and September 2026.

What makes OpenAI unique

  • A nonprofit is in charge: the OpenAI Foundation appoints OpenAI's whole board and held a 26% stake in October 2025.
  • ChatGPT reaches about one in seven people on Earth: 1.2 billion used it each week as of September 2026.
  • Microsoft is a major part-owner: it held about 27% in October 2025 and licenses OpenAI's models through 2032.

AIM Intelligence joins OpenAI's partner network, launching Stinger-Daybreak security assessments

AIM Intelligence, a Seoul-based AI safety and security company, has expanded its cybersecurity collaboration with OpenAI. It unveiled an application security assessment service that links its AI blue-teaming platform, Stinger, with OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity program. The service combines code vulnerability analysis using the Daybreak Blue model, runtime testing with Stinger, and expert review. It covers AI applications, web services, and APIs, and weighs flaws against an application's permissions, configurations, and data flows to show which to fix first. Results include reproduction evidence for validated findings and remediation guidance. The service is aimed at Korean organizations. On October 22 at OpenAI DevDay Exchange Seoul, OpenAI introduced AIM Intelligence as a Select Partner in the OpenAI Partner Network.

OpenAI launches Decisions API to rival TypeSafe, the $7.6B startup behind Jev

OpenAI has made its Decisions API model widely available, entering a market that recently made TypeSafe, a startup founded by a former OpenAI researcher, a $7.6 billion company. The API became available to all customers on Thursday. Decision models act as super classifiers: given a set of options, they choose quickly and rate their confidence. Developers use them in place of large language models to work faster and at much lower cost. OpenAI built its version by reconfiguring ChatGPT Luna. Product lead Nikunj Handa said response times fell from one to three seconds to 100 to 180 milliseconds. Speak, which builds AI language tutors, cut the time between actions from 1.4 seconds to 0.13 seconds. Other early customers included Box, Datadog, and Ramp. On public benchmarks, OpenAI's model ranks eighth and fourteenth, behind TypeSafe's Jev model.

Defenders' window narrows as Chinese AI models close in, while Meta posts $64.6B revenue

Meta said third-quarter revenue rose 26% to $64.6 billion, slightly above its forecast, and announced a new class of nonvoting common stock to raise capital for its AI spending without diluting chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg's control. Shares rose 2% in after-hours trading. Existing shareholders will get one Class C share for each Class A or B share they hold. The stock can be issued from January 19. Meta gave no timing or size for an equity offering. Free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion, against positive $10.63 billion a year earlier, due to AI investment. Full-year capital spending is expected at $135 billion to $145 billion, within its earlier range. Operating income fell 37% to just under $13 billion, partly due to a nearly $10 billion legal charge. A New Mexico judge also ordered Meta to pay $25 billion in a Cambridge Analytica case.
