Requirements
  • Two years of experience as a DSP 1 in a YAI program, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Newly hired employees must be at least 18 years old, have at least three years of direct support professional experience with the intellectual and developmental disabilities population, and obtain and maintain required YAI certifications within six months of appointment.
  • Hold foundational certifications for the applicable service setting, including Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention–Revised, CPR issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and either YAI-issued Approved Medication Administration Personnel certification for residential assignments or Day Services Model Mentorship Training.
  • Maintain foundational certifications and obtain applicable setting-specific certifications within the stated appointment timelines.
  • Meet the essential physical demands, including frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, assisting with lifting or moving individuals, and implementing emergency interventions when required.
  • Have strong written and oral communication skills, including documenting services for billing and tracking and communicating information about supported individuals with external providers and circles of support.
  • Have knowledge of the specific needs of supported individuals and a solid understanding of clinical rationales.
  • Be able and willing to assist with and teach supports and activities of daily living, including exposure to and handling of bodily fluids in accordance with documented plans.
  • Be proficient with computers and electronic systems, including email, Workday, Digital Agency, and related systems.
  • Hold and maintain additional program-required certifications, such as Choking–Return Demonstration, Diabetes Care, or Tube Feeding certifications.
  • Be able to remain calm, act assertively, and exercise professional competence and good judgment in stressful situations involving challenging individuals or behaviors.
  • Be able to work beyond scheduled hours or report as scheduled on holidays, during inclement weather, or during emergencies to maintain program coverage.
  • For assignments involving transportation, hold or obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and Van certification.
Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, teaching life skills and providing recreational opportunities that promote community integration.
  • Provide overall supervision, protection, and care; assist individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities; uphold personal rights; and facilitate activities that build social connections.
  • Ensure the health, wellness, and safety of supported individuals in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans.
  • Take the lead during crisis situations, de-escalate issues, and direct DSP 1 staff while following applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Implement person-centered plans, protective oversight, Behavior Support Plans, Staff Action Plans, and Life Plans, and model and train DSP 1 staff on their interventions and goals.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized therapeutic environment and use safe handling and infection-control procedures.
  • Provide personal care and assistance with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, toileting, personal hygiene, laundry, and housekeeping.
  • Administer medication as prescribed and according to applicable guidelines.
  • Teach and develop skills, support advocacy and communication, assist with dispute resolution, and facilitate ethical decision-making.
  • Supervise or plan and prepare balanced meals and snacks in accordance with individual dietary restrictions, modified diets, and liquid-consistency guidelines.
  • Transport and escort individuals to recreational activities, medical appointments, home visits, volunteer opportunities, employment sites, and other locations.
  • Assist individuals with purchases and safeguard personal allowance and other funds.
  • Use specialized clinical knowledge to provide effective, person-specific supports and inform activities and training.
  • Implement Behavior Support Plans using person-centered approaches to prevent escalation and support positive interactions.
  • Collect, record, and summarize data on observable behavior and report behavioral changes, symptoms, and concerns to clinical or leadership staff.
  • Report facility maintenance, upkeep, and safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor or designee.
  • Communicate program needs and feedback within the interdisciplinary team and address team or support-related concerns with supervisors and clinical or leadership staff.
  • Communicate with families, external providers, and other circles of support by phone, email, or in person to provide updates or obtain information.
  • Complete required training, certifications, documentation, communication logs, progress notes, service records, incident reports, maintenance requests, and other compliance or billing paperwork.
  • Use foundational teaching methods, including Explain, Model, Observe and Evaluate, task analysis, essential skills, supports, modifications, and progressive teaching.
  • Attend and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, consult with the team about care, and provide feedback to improve supports and program operations.
  • Use approved YAI and OPWDD verbal, environmental, and physical intervention techniques, including take-downs when required, to respond to challenging or self-injurious behavior.
  • Provide coverage for other direct support staff, including at other YAI or off-site locations, to maintain minimum staffing levels.
  • Comply with federal, state, local, and regulatory requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Assist or guide less-experienced staff with financial, clinical, medical, and documentation tasks.
  • Participate in implementing new processes, procedures, or systems and provide related feedback, training, or instruction.
  • Assist with preparing monthly summaries by reviewing and accurately summarizing progress data.
  • Participate in life-plan meetings and treatment-plan development.
  • Assist with or guide less-experienced staff in writing services and safeguards, establishing goals, and updating life plans, staff action plans, responses to service, and related documentation.
  • Operate a YAI motor vehicle when required for an assignment and transport supported individuals.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
