EBANX first to launch recurring payments via OPay in Nigeria, reaching 40M users

EBANX has become the first global payments company to launch recurring payments through OPay Direct Debit in Nigeria. Global subscription businesses can now reach OPay's 40 million monthly active users, or one in three Nigerian adults. Users authorise a payment once in the app, letting merchants collect future subscription charges without re-entering details. Only 5% of Nigerian adults own a credit card, while mobile phone penetration is 84%, according to the World Bank. Nigeria is Africa's largest e-commerce market, valued at $30 billion, according to World Data Lab. EBANX now offers recurring alternative payments in 13 emerging markets, including South Africa, where Canva was the first international company to offer recurring payments through Capitec Pay.

Emerging markets to add $8.7T in online spending by 2036, mostly from shoppers without credit cards

Asia will add 702 million middle-class adults between 2026 and 2036, three-quarters of all middle-class growth in emerging markets, according to a study by World Data Lab (WDL) and payments firm EBANX. Global online spending is set to grow from $11 trillion to $25.6 trillion over the period. Emerging markets will add $8.7 trillion, or 60% of the increase, led by China ($4.7 trillion) and India ($1.3 trillion). Most of these shoppers will not use credit cards. By 2036, only 20% of adults in emerging markets will hold one, against 66% in developed markets. The world will add 834 million online buyers but only 281 million card holders. Consumers aged 45 and over will account for 51% of emerging-market spending growth. "If your checkout only takes credit cards, you are competing for one in five adults in emerging markets and conceding the other four," said Marie-Elise Droga, EBANX's chief revenue officer.

EBANX expands to Pakistan with mobile wallets, launches native Apple Pay decryption across Latin America

EBANX is expanding into Pakistan and launching native Apple Pay decryption across Latin America. The payments technology company will begin operations in Pakistan next semester, offering local wallets JazzCash and Easypaisa, each with over 50 million users, plus the Raast instant-payment rail. Pakistan's e-commerce spending is projected to grow 22% annually through 2030. Credit card ownership among Gen Z is below 10%, making mobile wallets crucial for market access. EBANX is also rolling out in-house Apple Pay token decryption across 11 Latin American and Caribbean markets. Early data shows tokenised wallet processing achieved 94.4% approval rates, an 11-percentage-point improvement over non-tokenised transactions. Average order values ran 23.5% higher than standard card purchases. The company, founded in Brazil in 2012, now processes over 4 million daily transactions across 400-plus payment rails.
