About the Job

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience in laser physics, biomedical optics, or laser-matter interaction is required.
  • A proven track record in experimental research investigating light-tissue interaction and photo-induced tissue damage through thermal, photochemical, or photomechanical mechanisms is required.
  • Direct laboratory experience working with lasers and biological tissues, including tissue optics, ex-vivo or in-vitro models, or tissue phantoms, is required.
  • In-depth expertise in laser safety standards and formal classification is required.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory capabilities in setting up optical beam delivery, beam profiling, dosimetry, and sensitive detection and characterization instrumentation are required.

Responsibilities

  • Define experimental and theoretical research strategies to characterize light-tissue interactions, optical penetration, and thermal and mechanical effects in biological media.
  • Design, build, and operate experimental laboratory setups to investigate photo-induced tissue damage, including dermal and ocular tissue models, and define precise biological damage thresholds and exposure margins.
  • Serve as the team's foremost authority on laser safety, lead formal laser classification, including IEC 60825, ANSI Z136, and FDA CDRH, and lead product safety compliance.
  • Translate biological damage models and physical limits into actionable system-level specifications, hardware constraints, and operational safeguards.
  • Define and design system-level solutions for safety compliance.
  • Develop and validate analytical and numerical simulation models, including Monte Carlo light transport and thermal bio-heat equations, to predict tissue response and optical safety margins.
  • Analyze and report empirical findings to enable cross-functional engineering teams to make rigorous, risk-informed architecture decisions.
  • Partner with multidisciplinary teams across hardware, firmware, optics, and human factors to drive feasibility from concept to safe, viable product implementations.
  • Lead biological and physical risk assessment for novel optical concepts, identifying exposure limits, hazards, and mitigation pathways.
  • Conduct hands-on laboratory experiments combining lasers and biological tissue models to measure, observe, and quantify damage mechanisms under varied irradiation profiles.
  • Formulate and own the formal laser product classification strategy, defining engineering controls, interlocks, and compliance documentation.
  • Characterize system-level physical limits and optical delivery parameters, including wavelength, pulse duration, fluence, and beam profile, to maximize performance while adhering to safety standards.
  • Author comprehensive safety reports, compliance dossiers, and technical whitepapers to support engineering choices and regulatory alignment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral research or a leadership role in biophotonics, laser-tissue dynamics, or medical laser technology.
  • Hands-on experience navigating regulatory approval or safety certification for consumer or medical optical systems.
  • A deep understanding of ultrafast or short-pulse laser interactions with biological tissue and nonlinear optical damage regimes.
  • Proficiency with numerical modeling of optical propagation in scattering media, such as Monte Carlo simulations of light transport and finite element method bio-heat transfer.

About the Company

Apple

Designs phones, computers and their operating systems

Apple designs and sells consumer electronics, from iPhone smartphones and Mac computers to tablets and wearable devices. Its operating systems manage apps and built-in functions for communication and work, while iCloud stores files and synchronizes data across devices. Customers buy additional digital services through subscriptions such as Apple Music and Apple TV, and developers distribute software through the App Store. Apple earns money from hardware sales, subscriptions and digital transactions, selling directly to customers and through retailers and mobile carriers around the world. It was founded in 1976 and has its headquarters in Cupertino, California.
