About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Meta's ad revenue jumps 26% to $63.1B as AI chatbots slow Google search growth to 12%

Meta's ad revenue rose 26% in the third quarter to $63.1 billion, while Google's search unit grew 12% to $63.4 billion. The 14-point gap is the widest in Meta's favour since 2021. Meta says AI is improving its ad targeting tools across Facebook and Instagram. Google faces a threat as chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta's Muse draw users away from clicking search links. "That's potentially catastrophic for Google's ad business," said Nate Elliott, an analyst at Emarketer. Alphabet shares fell more than 12% after earnings, wiping out about $500 billion in market value. Meta's stock dropped 14% in October. Both companies plan heavy AI spending: Google up to $205 billion this year, Meta up to $145 billion.

Janus Henderson backs Meta as Muse AI agent draws 500,000 users in first week

Janus Henderson's Global Sustainable Equity Fund returned 1.86% in the third quarter of 2026, matching its benchmark and beating the IA Global peer group's 0.38%. In its investor letter, the fund said companies seen as vulnerable to artificial intelligence (AI) disruption recovered, while AI infrastructure, power, and cooling businesses came under pressure. The letter highlighted Meta Platforms, which launched Muse in September, a consumer AI agent that shops for users, from insurance to clothing. Muse drew more than 500,000 users in its first week, including more than 250,000 daily active users. Meta ranks fifth on Insider Monkey's list of the most popular hedge fund stocks heading into 2026. In all, 254 hedge fund portfolios held it at the end of the second quarter, down from 262 in the previous quarter.

S&P flips Meta outlook to negative as AI spending pushes capex to $225B in 2027

S&P Global Ratings kept Meta Platforms at AA- on October 30, 2026, but changed its outlook from stable to negative. It said Meta's ability to monetise AI investments is "more limited than that of its peers." S&P expects capital spending of more than $225 billion in 2027 and $252 billion in 2028. It projects adjusted leverage will reach 1.3x in 2028, above the 1.0x downgrade threshold, with the shortfall funded "entirely with debt." Meta recently raised about $37.5 billion through stock and mandatory convertible preferred shares. A $60 billion share programme starts in January 2027. A Meta spokesperson said the company "respectfully" disagrees with S&P's view. Shares fell 1.53% to $614.99.

Meta recruits bipartisan Washington team to woo Democrats while keeping Trump ties

Meta is building a bipartisan team of Washington veterans to deepen ties with Democrats while keeping its standing with Republicans, Axios reports. The push comes as scrutiny of AI and data centres becomes a bipartisan election issue ahead of the midterms. President Dina Powell McCormick is leading the recruitment. New hires include Michael Hacker, a longtime aide to Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn, and Nick Schmidt, a former top aide to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. Meta also hired Josh Raffel and Pat Trueman, both with Trump ties. In August, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and Powell McCormick met a House Democratic AI commission to discuss infrastructure and investment plans. Meta is backing local projects, including a $1 billion Future Is for Everyone Fund, to support communities hit by its infrastructure expansion.

Tech selloff wipes $1T off Nasdaq 100 as Intel plunges 30% on AI spending fears

Big Tech stocks fell sharply this week as investors worried that heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI) won't pay off soon. The Nasdaq 100 dropped roughly 4%, wiping out more than $1 trillion in value, while the S&P 500 fell more than 2% on Friday afternoon. Intel's stock plunged more than 30% to roughly $62 after it gave a weak fourth-quarter outlook. ServiceNow fell 27% on Thursday after weaker-than-expected third-quarter results. Amazon, Alphabet and Meta also dropped after earnings; Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42 billion. S&P 500 earnings growth has slipped to roughly 26% from 32% in the second quarter. Some investors are trimming tech gains to buy cheaper stocks elsewhere, though analysts such as Dan Ives remain optimistic about tech's long-term prospects.
