About the job

Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in at least two of the following areas: SRE fundamentals including networking, infrastructure, paging, and incident response; vendored or legacy software for manufacturing and design; scientific computing or design tools such as MATLAB, NI, or SolidWorks; or commercial and licensed engineering applications and how they are managed.
  • Interest or experience in defining a portfolio of applications as a system and verifying each application, rather than only operating a single product or owning a simple greenfield domain.
  • Comfort with requirements management, risk analysis, and verification and validation; able to write and run tests using problem-centric rather than solution-centric thinking.
  • Familiarity with license-server architectures and on-premises Windows or Linux hosts.
  • Ability to understand how designers use CATIA, 3DX, MATLAB, NI, and Ansys-class tools and translate that use into testable requirements.
  • Working knowledge of 3DX as Tesla uses it, or the ability to acquire that knowledge quickly; this is not an introductory PLM role.
  • Strong understanding of system design, including availability, reliability, interfaces, and the distinction between vendor claims and tested functionality.
  • Ability to navigate uncertainty and loosely defined problem statements.
  • Must work on-site five days per week and participate in on-call, including weekends.
Responsibilities
  • Enumerate the commercially acquired software portfolio used to design cars, robots, and facilities.
  • Develop a coherent strategy for ownership of portfolio components and consolidate disconnected catalogs and monitoring tools.
  • Map each portfolio application to a problem domain in the design engineering organization.
  • Define quantitative targets for data consistency, usability, availability, and cost using falsifiable acceptance criteria, and keep the target dictionary up to date.
  • Work with software engineers to verify that the portfolio is implemented correctly.
  • Personally validate that portfolio applications meet their targets.
  • Document incident-management procedures for unexpected validation failures, including runbooks and an on-call rotation.
  • Assign ownership to the product team responsible for each problem rather than retaining shadow product management, implementation, and process-consulting duties for every vendor application.
  • Investigate new applications and new versions using requirements, risk assessment, and testing, then enroll or reject them.
  • Provide technical leadership across vendors, Support, and design teams, and drive the roadmap to completion.
Desired Qualifications
  • Domain experience is welcome but not required.

About the company

Tesla makes electric cars and batteries that store power for homes and utilities, and it develops self-driving software and humanoid robots. In 2023, its Model Y became the first electric vehicle to rank as the world's best-selling car. Buyers order the Model 3 sedan, Model Y SUV, or Cybertruck pickup directly from Tesla instead of through dealers, and they charge on its Supercharger fast-charging network. It also sells Megapack and Powerwall batteries, runs a robotaxi service, and charges drivers a monthly fee for self-driving software that still needs their supervision. Tesla was founded in 2003, with Elon Musk as its lead early investor and a recognized co-founder, and it is based in Austin, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are growing again: revenue rose 26% to $28.2 billion in the June 2026 quarter, after falling 3% in 2025.
  • Software adds income beyond cars: paid users of its supervised self-driving feature rose 56% to 1.48 million by June 2026.
  • Hiring is back: Tesla's headcount grew 7% to 134,785 by December 2025, after layoffs shrank it 11% in 2024.

What critics are saying

  • Growth isn't reaching profit: operating profit fell 57% to $398 million in the June 2026 quarter, a 1.4% margin.
  • Alphabet's Waymo is far ahead in robotaxis: Texas records in May 2026 listed 577 Waymo vehicles to Tesla's 42.
  • Stock grants have lost value: Tesla shares fell 17% in 2026 through October 8, after a December 2025 record.

What makes Tesla unique

  • Energy storage punches above its weight: Tesla's energy unit made 13% of 2025 sales but 22% of gross profit.
  • Tesla set the charging standard: Ford, GM and all major EV sellers in North America adopted its plug by 2024.
  • Robots are written into Musk's pay: his 2025 award sets goals of 1 million humanoid robots and 1 million robotaxis.

Tariffs, diesel and chips add about $2B in costs each for GM and Ford this year

General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis reported higher revenue this quarter, driven by sales of big cars and trucks. But rising costs for steel, copper, computer chips, and diesel are squeezing them. GM and Ford each expect these costs, which some companies label "commodity and logistics," to add about $2 billion this year. Analysts say the term largely stands in for tariffs and inflation. EV sales have fallen since the federal tax credit ended, though GM says it is not giving up on them. Hybrid sales are up almost 27%, according to Edmunds. Meanwhile, Exxon doubled its earnings and Chevron's rose 180%, as wars in Iran and Ukraine disrupted oil supply.

Tesla $1,000 stake could be worth $1,182 by 2030 in base case, model says

A $1,000 investment in Tesla could be worth about $1,182.08 by 2030, an 18.21% return, according to a 24/7 Wall St model. Its bull case reaches $1,513.49, while the bear case lands at $999.35. Over five years, to October 22, 2031, the base case is $1,269.40, or 4.89% a year. The one-year target is $404.84, 4.75% above the $383.33 trading price, which earns a hold rating. The model points to three growth drivers: more than 1.7 million paid Full Self-Driving customers, Robotaxi expansion to Dallas, and energy storage demand. Energy gross margin rose from 20.4% to 33.1%. Risks include a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 402. Operating income fell 55.79% and free cash flow dropped 61.63%. Shares are down 14.76% this year.

Tariffs, chips and diesel add $2B in costs for Ford and GM despite strong truck sales

US automakers reported higher third-quarter revenue, but say costs are climbing. Steel, copper, computer chips and diesel have all become pricier, partly because of tariffs the Trump administration has imposed since 2025. General Motors expects materials and diesel to cost it as much as $2 billion this year, and it still pays about $2.5 billion in tariffs. Ford expects a year-over-year headwind of about $2 billion from commodities, memory chips and logistics. Stellantis will give more detail in the fourth quarter. Demand remains firm. GM's light-duty truck sales rose 9%, and Stellantis' US pickup sales rose 34%. The average new vehicle price was just over $50,000 in September. Electric vehicle sales fell after the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, while hybrid sales rose 27%.

That is about 72% of Mercedes-Benz's 1,369 electric car registrations and a quarter of BMW's 4,014. In October alone, Tesla registered 220 cars through October 26, ahead of Mercedes-Benz's 47 but behind BMW's 349. Tesla's overseas shareholders put about ₹86 crore of fresh equity into its Indian unit in FY26, lifting equity capital from ₹50 crore to about ₹136 crore. The unit's net profit rose to ₹5.16 crore from ₹55.49 lakh, while revenue reached ₹247.31 crore. The Model Y now starts at ₹50.89 lakh after a ₹9 lakh price cut.
