Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A minimum of 1–3 years of work experience in a service industry is required.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination and OSHA-compliant training must be maintained throughout employment.
  • An active CPR certification is required or must be completed upon hire.
  • Knowledge of modern public safety and police practices, including patrol, communications and dispatching, emergency medical and first-responder services, investigation, crime prevention, and community policing principles is required.
  • The ability to analyze emergency and non-emergency situations and develop effective courses of action is required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • The ability to maintain and monitor radio communications is required.
  • The ability to communicate by telephone and answer questions from visitors, students, employees, and guests is required.
  • The ability to enter information and maintain paper and electronic records is required.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving methods and the ability to learn the operating procedures of various college departments are required.
  • The employee must be willing to work flexible hours, schedules, and overtime assignments.
  • Regular physical exertion and walking are required.
  • The employee must be able to travel on and off campus.
  • The employee must have held a valid unrestricted United States driver's license for one year and maintain an insurable or satisfactory driving record.
  • The employee must complete and pass the college vehicle training program within the first 60 days of employment and complete required safety training.
  • The employee must meet the responsibilities of a Campus Security Authority under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act.
Responsibilities
  • Work in the Public Safety Department Communications Center as a dispatcher by receiving emergency calls, determining incident nature and location, and dispatching appropriate police, fire, and emergency medical services personnel using radio, telephone, and computer systems.
  • Operate complex dispatch software, coordinate communications, relay information between emergency responders and agencies, provide pre-arrival instructions, maintain detailed records, and work in a high-stress, shift-based environment.
  • Perform parking enforcement, foot and mobile escorts, and public safety duties at special events on campus.
  • Perform daily unlocking and locking of campus buildings.
  • Patrol campus on foot or in a vehicle in an unarmed, uniformed security function.
  • Maintain radio communications with police and assign tasks to officers using communications procedures based on safety priority and personnel availability.
  • Monitor radio communications of local police and fire departments.
  • Answer routine business and emergency phone calls.
  • Monitor and operate access control systems, alarm systems, and closed-circuit television systems.
  • Provide community engagement services, assistance, and resources to members of the college community.
  • Participate in and deliver crime prevention programming.
  • Train other Public Safety personnel as necessary.
  • Perform additional assignments and responsibilities as required.
  • Perform training, special projects, and community engagement activities virtually or in person when assigned.
  • Forward criminal-offense reports received as a Campus Security Authority according to the college reporting structure for assessment, crime-log inclusion, and annual statistical disclosures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Security, health and safety, emergency medical, or other safety-related experience is recommended.
  • Previous security or dispatching experience, especially in a college or university police department, is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Being in good mental and physical condition is desirable.
