About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing aerospace mechanical structures, electronics packaging, or similar high-performance, flight-qualified hardware is required.
  • Experience with static structural, modal, random vibration, and thermal analysis of precision structures is required at a level commensurate with experience.
  • Experience with 3D computer-aided design modeling programs is required; Creo is preferred.
  • Experience with finite element analysis tools is required; Ansys is preferred.
  • Experience with Steinberg or Engelmeier solder fatigue is required.
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing implementation and analysis using ASME Y14.5 is required.
  • Ability to work independently and balance several projects at one time is required.
  • A history of communicating design concepts and analysis results effectively is required.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive, professional relationships is required.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as refugees or granted asylum.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute as a member of a cross-disciplinary team in a fast-paced design environment.
  • Participate in the entire design cycle of flight- and mission-critical mechanical structures and electronics packaging.
  • Support developmental trade studies for mechanical design, materials, mounting concepts, and thermal and structural design approaches.
  • Create mechanical interface definitions, specifications, and control documents for precision structures and assemblies.
  • Collaborate with radio frequency and electrical engineering teams to integrate electronics, including printed circuit boards, radio frequency front ends, and associated components, into mechanically robust assemblies, including detailed thermal and structural analyses.
  • Design mechanical structures and electronics packaging for performance, stability, and high reliability under launch, transit, and lunar surface environments.
  • Create three-dimensional computer-aided design models and assemblies of precision structures and supporting hardware; generate part and assembly drawings, installation drawings, and other required technical documentation.
  • Build and evaluate prototype assemblies and iterate designs based on structural and thermal performance test data.
  • Create assembly aids, metrology fixtures, and test fixtures to verify alignment, surface accuracy, and mechanical performance.
  • Plan and conduct engineering tests, including vibration, shock, thermal cycle, and thermal vacuum tests, and lead data reviews to assess structural margins and thermal performance.
  • Review assembly instructions and support hardware builds, including bonding and fastener processes.
  • Validate mechanical and thermal requirements through design, detailed structural and thermal analysis, testing, and inspection.
  • Support Production and Quality Engineering by dispositioning material defects and nonconformances on mechanical hardware.
  • Manage revisions of design configurations through the product lifecycle.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with composite structures, such as carbon fiber, including laminate design, bonding, and integration into precision assemblies.
  • Experience with antenna structures, radio frequency hardware, or precision mechanical systems.
  • Experience with recent versions of Creo, Windchill, and Ansys Mechanical.
  • Experience with fatigue analysis and fracture mechanics.
  • Experience with aerospace industry-standard structural analysis methods, including Bruhn, Marks', Shigley, Steinberg, and Roark's.
  • Experience with environmental testing, including vibration, shock, and thermal cycle testing.
  • Experience mentoring or training others.

About the Company

Blue Origin

Builds rockets, engines and lunar spacecraft

Blue Origin builds rockets, engines and spacecraft for commercial satellite operators and government space programs. Its New Glenn orbital rocket uses a reusable first stage, while Blue Moon landers are designed to transport cargo and astronauts to the lunar surface. The company designs and manufactures liquid-fueled propulsion systems, and its New Shepard vehicle is built for short suborbital trips carrying people and research payloads. Customers pay for launch services and engines, and government development contracts fund work on systems for exploration beyond Earth orbit. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin is headquartered in Kent, Washington.
