About the company

Spearhead designs and builds complex timber and steel structures for architectural projects, collaborating with architects, engineers, and builders. It uses Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) to connect BIM-based design to CNC fabrication and on-site assembly. It differentiates itself with vertical integration, notably a $60 million facility to manufacture its own glue-laminated timber (glulam) in-house, including long curved elements, zero-VOC products, and GSA glued-in-rod tech, with machinery from Ledinek and Hundegger. Its goal is to streamline the path from concept to construction and deliver architecturally driven, sustainable timber and steel architecture across multiple countries.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Construction is underway, with commissioning scheduled for summer 2026, accelerating capacity growth.
  • The facility targets more than 60 new jobs, doubling Nelson headcount above 120.
  • Provincial Manufacturing Jobs Fund support validates Spearhead’s expansion and lowers execution risk.

What critics are saying

  • Tariffs on wood products reached 10-25% in 2026, squeezing export margins.
  • The new plant’s commissioning and equipment integration can delay revenue and consume capital.
  • Project-based demand stays concentrated in high-end architecture; one stalled landmark contract hurts utilization.

What makes Spearhead unique

  • Spearhead’s $60 million Nelson facility adds in-house glulam production and CNC machining in 2026.
  • Ledinek’s line enables straight, curved, and double-curved glulam up to 80 feet.
  • Spearhead’s DfMA workflow unifies BIM, fabrication, and on-site installation for complex projects.
