TelevisaUnivision US ad revenue drops 29% to $323M amid World Cup competition

TelevisaUnivision's US advertising revenue fell 29% to $323.3 million in the second quarter, hit by cyclical headwinds and competition from NBCUniversal's Telemundo, which aired the FIFA World Cup. Telemundo generated $403.6 million in advertising revenue from the tournament between 11 June and 19 July, according to iSpot.tv estimates. The decline was offset by stronger performance in Mexico, where TelevisaUnivision holds World Cup broadcast rights. Mexican advertising revenue rose 23% to $353 million. Overall company advertising revenue dropped 9% to $676.3 million. However, subscription and licensing revenue climbed 40% to $621 million, boosted by sublicensing World Cup rights to Latin American countries and growth in the ViX streaming service. Total revenue across both markets increased 10% to $1.33 billion.
