  • Confidently define and interpret sensory, palatability, stability, shelf-life, analytical, and nutritional testing, and change course when evidence requires it.
  • Maintain high standards for formulations, specifications, claims, documentation, and manufacturing, and decline to approve products that do not meet those standards.

  • Own product lines across wellness, gifting, food, and non-food, balancing customer insight and execution while ensuring each product has a clear reason to exist.
  • Shape the long-term roadmap for additional products and gifting across both brands.
  • Prioritise the product pipeline based on customer, market, and commercial opportunity.
  • Identify and develop new product opportunities using market, customer, and competitor insight.
  • Lead reformulations and decide when products no longer deliver against their role or potential.
  • Partner with third-party manufacturers and suppliers to identify, develop, and launch new opportunities.
  • Own product development from concept and recipe through specification, testing, launch, and post-launch performance.
  • Develop food and non-food products, ensuring each range remains true to its brief and has a clear reason to exist.
  • Develop and approve recipes, specifications, and nutritional targets in partnership with manufacturing teams.
  • Lead factory and production-line trials, resolve technical issues, and ensure products are ready for scale-up and launch.
  • Define and interpret testing needed to prove product performance, including palatability, stability and shelf-life, sensory, and analytical testing; use the evidence to guide decisions.
  • Own claim substantiation end-to-end, ensuring claims are supported by robust evidence and removing unsupported claims.
  • Lead product launches, equip customer-facing teams for go-to-market, and conduct post-launch reviews to identify learnings and improvements.
  • Maintain product briefs, specifications, and supporting documentation to a high standard.
  • Work with the Projects team to improve ways of working and build a faster, stronger, and more effective product pipeline.
  • Manage the additional products team to deliver agreed roadmaps on time and in full.
  • Onboard and develop the direct report, and continuously raise the quality of team inputs and outputs.

Plant-based Omega 3 makes debut in pet food.

Plant-based Omega 3 makes debut in pet food. By David Rees March 24, 2026 2 Mins Read Scottish biotech company MiAlgae has announced a new partnership with fresh dog food provider Butternut Box to introduce a fish-free Omega 3 ingredient into pet food for the first time. MiAlgae is a natural microalgae grown using upcycled by-products from the Scottish whisky industry. While remaining entirely plant-based, one tonne of the commodity contains the equivalent Omega 3s as 30 tonnes of wild-caught fish, the company claims. The product will be used as an ingredient in Butternut Box's vegetarian meal option Ready Steady Veggie from this month in all of its markets across Europe, with ongoing supply to come from MiAlgae's new production facility in Scotland. Douglas Martin, founder and CEO of MiAlgae, said: "Pet Business World is thrilled to partner with Butternut Box, who share the same commitment to quality ingredients, the health of pets, and sustainability. "By integrating our sustainably produced, fish-free Omega-3s into their fresh meals, we're helping set a new standard for pet nutrition - one that delivers exceptional health benefits while protecting our oceans." David Nolan, co-founder at Butternut Box, added: "Our mission has always been to get more dogs eating the fresh, human-quality food they deserve. By partnering with MiAlgae to enhance our Ready Steady Veggie meal, we're proving that you don't have to compromise on nutrition to be kind to the planet. It's a step forward for our B Corp journey and for the health of dogs across Europe."
