About the Job

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating enterprise Cisco environments, including campus and data-center switching, dynamic routing with OSPF and BGP, and enterprise wireless using Cisco Wireless or a comparable platform.
  • Proficiency with Cisco Catalyst Center or an equivalent controller-based management platform.
  • Practical experience designing and operating Cisco SD-WAN or comparable systems, including overlay and underlay architectures, transport diversity, policy-based routing, and carrier-service management with ISPs and private-circuit providers.
  • Deep expertise administering and designing policies for Palo Alto Networks next-generation firewalls, including Panorama-based centralized management, AIOps for NGFW, App-ID, User-ID, decryption, intrusion prevention, and URL filtering.
  • Proficiency designing and supporting Azure networking constructs, including VNets, peering, NSGs, Azure Firewall, Application Gateway/WAF, ExpressRoute or VPN gateways, and integrating cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Working experience implementing Zero Trust Network Access, such as Zscaler, and modern remote-access VPN; integrating with identity providers such as Active Directory and Entra ID, and conditional access.
  • Familiarity with enterprise network management and observability platforms, including designing alerting, telemetry collection, and dashboards for proactive operations and root-cause analysis.
  • Strong working knowledge of network security best practices and applicable frameworks, including CIS Controls, ISO 27001, NIST SP 800-171, and CMMC v2.0 Level 2; experience designing and operating networks that store, process, or transmit Controlled Unclassified Information.
  • Experience using configuration management and Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Ansible and Terraform for network operations, with disciplined change management aligned to ITIL-style practices.
  • At least five years of progressive enterprise network-engineering experience, including hands-on design, implementation, and operations in complex, regulated environments, and the ability to deliver secure, scalable, automated network solutions.
  • Advanced knowledge of secure configuration benchmarks and hands-on experience hardening network devices.
  • Thorough understanding of network infrastructure, concepts of operation, and protocols including TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, Syslog, and IPSec.
  • Working knowledge of endpoint security, SIEM, and vulnerability management as they integrate with network controls.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills while working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including authoring RFCs, design documents, and operating procedures for technical and executive audiences.
  • Proficiency with workflow and lifecycle management systems such as Atlassian Jira and Confluence.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related Engineering Discipline.
  • At least one of the following certifications is required, although equivalent industry experience is considered: Cisco CCNP Enterprise or higher; Palo Alto Networks PCNSE; Cisco SD-WAN Specialist or equivalent SD-WAN credential; CompTIA Security+; or an AWS or Azure networking certification such as AZ-700.
  • Ability to work for extended periods at a computer screen and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to reach by extending hands or arms in any direction and sufficient finger dexterity to manipulate objects using fingers, such as a keyboard.
  • Ability to listen to and understand spoken information and ideas, communicate information and ideas clearly through speech, read and understand written information and ideas, apply general rules to specific problems to produce sensible answers, and identify and understand another person's speech.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed technical and performance specifications for enterprise network solutions based on business needs, operational requirements, and constraints across diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Research technology options and their functional, performance, security, and interoperability characteristics; evaluate alternatives and select appropriate platforms.
  • Produce detailed network architecture and designs covering routing, switching, wireless, firewalls, SD-WAN, remote and site-to-site VPN, cloud networking, and segmentation, with integrated security controls and hardening; collaborate with the Network Architect and senior team members to drive enterprise best practices.
  • Own end-to-end delivery of cross-functional network initiatives through the team's Request for Change process by structuring problems, evaluating solutions, coordinating cross-team reviewers, and driving proposals through governance to implementation.
  • Lead implementation and configuration of network components, using templates and automation in accordance with change-management policies and security baselines.
  • Design and operate dedicated network segments and supporting controls, such as dedicated firewalls, isolated VLANs, and encrypted transport, for regulated environments including the Controlled Unclassified Information enclave.
  • Plan, evaluate, and execute capacity optimization, updates, upgrades, and other lifecycle activities; troubleshoot complex infrastructure problems and provide escalation-level support for service availability and performance issues.
  • Manage carrier and Internet service relationships and the underlying physical layer at the Tysons headquarters and other sites, including copper/fiber identification, demarcation, and coordination of provider moves, adds, and changes.
  • Engineer site-to-site and customer-program connectivity, including private circuits for project delivery such as transit and rail programs, in coordination with project teams.
  • Create and maintain accurate system documentation, including design and configuration plans, network and system boundary diagrams, task-oriented procedures, operations and maintenance plans, and runbooks.
  • Mentor junior network engineers, review team designs and changes, and contribute to standards, templates, and reusable patterns.
