About the company

The New York Times Company publishes The New York Times, a daily newspaper and news site read around the world, plus subscription products such as The Athletic for sports, Wirecutter for product reviews, NYT Games, and NYT Cooking. Its 1971 publication of the Pentagon Papers, a secret government history of the Vietnam War, led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling for press freedom. Readers follow the news, play puzzles such as Wordle, and find recipes on its websites and apps. They pay for one product or a single subscription covering all of them, while advertising, Wirecutter's shopping referral fees, and the printed newspaper bring in the rest. The Times was first published in 1851, and the company is based in New York City.

What believers are saying

  • Subscription growth is still fast: digital subscription revenue rose 16.4% in the June 2026 quarter as it added 280,000 subscribers.
  • Jobs rest on rising profits: operating profit grew 23% to $431.6 million in 2025, on $2.82 billion of revenue.
  • It hires while rivals cut: The Athletic added six Washington Post sports journalists after the Post's February 2026 layoffs.

What critics are saying

  • Newsroom hybrid work is at risk: a February 2026 Times proposal would allow five-day office mandates from March 2027.
  • Stock grants lost value: shares fell 15% in August 2026 when costs topped forecasts, leaving them down 8.6% for 2026.
  • AI chatbots compete for its readers: it sued AI search startup Perplexity in December 2025, after suing OpenAI in 2023.

What makes The New York Times unique

Bolt CEO defends firing entire HR team as EEOC chair backs discrimination lawsuit against NYT

Bolt CEO Ryan Breslow sparked controversy at the Fortune Workplace Innovation Summit by revealing he fired his entire HR team, claiming they "created problems that didn't exist". The comments came one month after laying off roughly 30% of staff and amid reports of equity-for-salary arrangements and unpaid contractors, which Breslow denied. The summit also featured Andrea Lucas, chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, defending her agency's lawsuit against The New York Times for allegedly discriminating against a white male editor. Lucas rejected suggestions the case was politically motivated, stating "civil rights should be for everyone". Other summit discussions focused on AI's potential to reshape up to 50% of work hours within five years, according to McKinsey, alongside workplace culture topics including four-day workweeks and pay transparency.
