Diageo struggles while Constellation gains hedge fund favour despite sector headwinds

Jim Cramer has shifted his stance on the alcoholic beverage sector, showing cautious optimism for Constellation Brands whilst remaining bearish on Diageo. He highlighted Constellation's new CEO, Ned Fink, as a potential catalyst for growth, noting Fink's successful track record at Jim Beam. Diageo faces multiple headwinds, including a 34.9% sales decline in China and an 8.4% drop in North American net sales. The stock has fallen 52% over five years. Constellation grew beer sales 2% to $2.28 billion in fiscal Q1, beating earnings expectations. However, beer depletion fell 0.3%, whilst wine and spirit sales dropped 10%. Hedge funds appear to favour Constellation, with 56 funds holding stakes versus 35 for Diageo. However, Diageo trades at a higher forward P/E ratio of 14.41 compared to Constellation's 11.36.

Constellation Brands stock down 50% as market ignores strong Q1 earnings and $11.20–11.90 EPS guidance

Constellation Brands shares have more than halved from spring 2024 highs despite solid fundamentals, Jim Cramer said on Mad Money. The stock trades below 11 times earnings and yields 3.1%. The company posted better-than-expected first-quarter results for fiscal 2027, with net sales of $2.43 billion and comparable earnings per share of $3.43, beating the $3.21 consensus. Its beer division generated $2.28 billion in sales, up 2% year-over-year, with a 39% operating margin. Management cited industry weakness and immigration policy impacts on its Hispanic customer base. Although executives noted World Cup tailwinds, they maintained full-year guidance of $11.20 to $11.90 per share rather than raising it, disappointing investors. Nicholas Fink took over as chief executive in April.

Constellation Brands beer sales rise 2% to $2.28B as wine segment posts operating loss

Constellation Brands reported mixed first-quarter fiscal 2027 results, with beer sales rising 2% to $2.28 billion whilst wine and spirits struggled. Beer shipments increased 1.8%, though depletions fell 0.3%. Brands like Pacifico and Victoria offset declines in Modelo Especial and Corona Extra. Consolidated gross profit margin improved to 54.3% from 50.4% year-over-year. However, beer operating margin held steady at 39%, pressured by $13 million in aluminium tariffs and increased marketing spending. Wine and spirits segment sales dropped 47% to $149.2 million, primarily due to 2025 divestitures. Organic sales in the segment grew 8%, but it posted a $1.1 million operating loss. The company expects wine and spirits organic sales to remain flat for fiscal 2027.

Constellation Brands' beer sales dip despite World Cup boost to on-premise demand

Constellation Brands reported fiscal first-quarter net sales of $2.43 billion, down from $2.52 billion a year earlier but above analyst expectations of $2.39 billion. The US importer of Modelo and Corona saw profit rise to $653.8 million from $516.1 million year-over-year. The results come as the broader alcohol industry faces challenges, with a Gallup survey finding adult alcohol consumption hit an all-time low of 54% last year. However, rising aluminium prices pose margin pressures for beer manufacturers. The World Cup offers a bright spot: on-premise beer sales increased 5.5% nationally during the first 21 US-hosted matches, with sales in host markets climbing 15.4% year-over-year, according to Beer Institute data.
