Topgolf under construction at Valley Children's as nonprofit begins retail development.

Topgolf under construction at Valley Children's as nonprofit begins retail development. October 6, 2026 8:30 PM Gift Article Key Takeaways AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom. Valley Children's Hospital has revealed that high-tech golfing venue company Topgolf will be the first tenant at its on-campus commercial development in Madera County. The "Topgolf San Joaquin Valley" facility, which is being built in the space between the main hospital building and Highway 41, is expected to open by summer 2027. During a Tuesday groundbreaking ceremony, hospital executives said the Valley Children's on-campus commercial development is necessary to raise extra revenues to pay for children's healthcare as systems across the country brace for government funding reductions. They also hinted at what commercial projects are still to come. "There will probably be a hotel right across the street," said Valley Children's CEO Todd Suntrapak. "I can't talk too much about it, but it has four stars." The nonprofit hospital has been planning to build a commercial development for several years. Now called "Echelon," the planned development was called The Hill when the hospital revealed conceptual images of the space in 2024. The hospital said then that the development would include retail, entertainment space, hotel space and new apartments on its land south of Children's Boulevard. Since then, the Valley Children's land holdings off Highway 41 have also expanded north toward Madera County's Riverstone community - though the hospital has yet to reveal a planned use that new space. Madera Topgolf facility to be first of its kind. Erin Chamberlin, Topgolf chief operating officer, said during the ceremony that the facility at Valley Children's will be the first in California that features the company's "Next Generation design." The facility will include two levels, 72 climate-controlled hitting bays, a full-service restaurant and bar, an arcade and mini-golf. The intent it to serve not only golfers, Chamberlin said. "It's really fun if you're just learning the game or if you're practicing and getting better," she said. "It's also really fun for a family outing, for a date night and even corporate guest members." Madera County Supervisor Jordan Wamhoff, whose district includes the Valley Children's campus, said the Topgolf project is creating 250 construction jobs and also 250 permanent jobs once the facility is completed. He framed the new development as another step in the growth of southeast Madera County, which has more commercial projects in the pipeline just north at the Riverstone and Tesoro Viejo communities. "Someone comes to Topgolf for the afternoon," he said, "maybe they'll come back and visit Bass Lake or Yosemite. Maybe they'll start looking at one of our 10,000 new homes that are being built just to the north."
