About the company

Starling Bank is a digital bank in the UK offering personal and business current accounts through a mobile app. For individuals, it provides features like instant spending notifications, insights, and Spaces (pots) to separate money. For businesses, it offers business accounts with invoicing and accounting integrations. The app handles account management, payments, and budgeting in one place, with transactions processed online and via card payments. The bank earns revenue from card interchange fees, interest on balances held with the central bank, and lending (such as personal loans and overdrafts). Its approach combines mobile-first banking with a broad set of services in a single app, differentiating itself through the Spaces budgeting tool, real-time transaction insights, and a strong focus on both personal and business banking. Starling’s goal is to grow its customer base while expanding its lending portfolio and offering a complete digital banking experience in the UK.

LHV Bank appoints former Starling lending chief Damian Thompson as CEO.

LHV Bank appoints former Starling lending chief Damian Thompson as CEO. LHV Bank has appointed former Starling Bank lending executive Damian Thompson as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, as the UK bank continues to expand its SME and specialist property lending operations. Thompson, who previously led Starling's lending activities and served as chief executive of buy-to-let lender Fleet Mortgages, is expected to join on 4 January 2027, subject to regulatory approval by the Prudential Regulation Authority and Financial Conduct Authority. The appointment follows a period of expansion for LHV Bank, which announced in September that it had surpassed £1bn in cumulative lending to UK SMEs and property investors since launching its SME lending operation in 2023. Its lending activities include commercial real estate, trading-business mortgages and specialist buy-to-let finance. The bank reported an outstanding lending portfolio of £700m at the end of 2025, an increase of 136% over the year. Thompson brings more than 35 years of UK banking experience. After almost two decades in senior roles at NatWest Markets, he joined Starling Bank's executive team in 2021, overseeing lending and asset management as the bank expanded. During his tenure, Starling's loan portfolio grew to more than £5bn, largely across mortgages and SME lending. In 2023, he also became Chief Executive Officer of Fleet Mortgages, before taking responsibility for Starling's SME banking products, retail overdrafts and loan products. He has also chaired UK Finance's Specialist Banks Advisory Forum, which represents banks outside the UK's five largest banking groups. Mihkel Torim, Chairman of the Board of LHV Bank Limited, commented: "Damian knows banking, lending and technology. He combines the experience of one of the UK's largest banks with the pace of Starling, where he led the growth of its lending as it became a major digital bank, and he shares the entrepreneurial spirit that defines LHV. Growing its local presence in the UK on a strong technology platform is at the core of its strategy, and Damian has the experience to lead it." Damian Thompson, incoming Chief Executive Officer of LHV Bank Limited, said: "LHV Bank has strong foundations for its next phase of growth: advanced technology, the backing of a Group with a sustained record of profitable growth, and a clear ambition to expand its lending. The opportunity to lead a bank with that tech advantage through rapid growth while maintaining the highest standards of risk management and regulatory compliance is compelling. I look forward to working with the UK team and colleagues across the Group to lead LHV Bank into its next chapter."

Agentic payments expose blind spots in fraud controls.

Agentic payments expose blind spots in fraud controls. October 7, 2026 As AI agents begin making purchases for customers, the financial crime controls built around human behaviour may be looking in the wrong place. According to Vivox AI, a transaction can sit comfortably within every spending limit and still stem from a manipulated decision made long before checkout. Vivox AI's analysis draws on a panel held at QUBE Events' sixth Financial Innovation Forum: Payments & RegTech. Bank of London deputy director of financial crime Zainab Shode moderated the session. She was joined by Manish Kumar, former head of payment acceptance products at Starling Bank; Mastercard vice president of product management Priyanshi Mathur; PXP group CEO Kamran Hedjri; and CGI vice president of payments solutions Ainsley Ward. Consider a simple instruction to book a hotel. An agent might pick a convincing fake website and pay a fraudulent merchant with the customer's full authority. In a more extreme scenario, it could cancel another guest's booking to secure the room. In both cases, Vivox AI notes, the final payment reveals only part of the story. The panel framed consent as a set of specific, checkable permissions rather than a single approval. Payment providers need to know how much an agent may spend, which merchants or categories it may use, when its authority expires and how a customer can amend or withdraw it. These rules will vary between cards, digital wallets and account-to-account transfers, each of which handles authorisation, disputes and liability differently. Identity also becomes more complex. Firms must confirm not only who the customer is, but which agent is acting and whether it is the one the customer authorised. Vivox AI highlights the value of records that link customer identity, agent identity and the scope of authority, allowing investigators to reconstruct what was requested, what the agent encountered and what it did. Revoking an agent's access in an app is only meaningful if that change is recognised across the entire payment journey. Fraud may now happen upstream. Panellists pointed to fake merchant sites, fabricated catalogues and malicious instructions hidden in content agents read, as well as interference when permissions are first set. Once attackers find a weakness, automated agents could exploit it repeatedly and at speed. Liability remains unresolved. Participants disagreed on how responsibility should be shared between customers and the firms supplying agents, payments and safeguards, and on how existing reimbursement rules would apply. What they agreed on was the need for evidence detailed enough to pinpoint where a failure occurred. For Vivox AI, the takeaway is clear: firms should test now whether their fraud, money laundering and sanctions controls can separate legitimate automated activity from misuse, rather than waiting for a finished monitoring model. Starling Bank's Anne Boden wants to compete with Anthropic for talent at new AI fintech.

Starling Bank's Anne Boden wants to compete with Anthropic for talent at new AI fintech. 6 hours ago It has been over three years since Anne Boden stepped down as CEO of Starling Bank, the digital banking unicorn most recently valued at £4bn ($5.4bn). After an extended period of absence, she now looks to be back in the startup game and has some lofty hiring aspirations. Boden said in a LinkedIn post earlier today that she's hiring for a "MoonShot" project and wants to hire people who are deciding between "making your fortune at Anthropic, or launching your own AI start-up." Boden describes the new venture as "engineering led" and "well paid with equity." It's another fintech, rather than a new AI lab. Boden said that the company will be "right at the start of the next revolution in banking technology," and ideally wants people with three years of banking tech experience. Speaking at a conference in June, Boden said that banks will be "opening bank accounts to agents" rather than individuals, and that app-based banks will be a thing of the past. Her new project may have something to do with that. Boden has been working on AI quietly since 2023, when she renamed one of her companies 'AI by Boden.' In micro-accounts for 2025 released on Companies House, the entity had just 3 employees. She did not respond to a request for comment on whether this new initative will be an expansion of that entity or whether it will be a new, standalone project. Starling Bank has been pushing heavily into AI as well, launching an agentic money manager in March. It has also used AI to cut jobs; The Guardian reported in July that the bank was cutting 130 roles, but Starling said it was "continuing to hire tech and AI engineers."
