PATH appoints Dr. Jeremy Farrar as Chief of Asia, Middle East, and Europe regional division. New SARS-CoV-1 antibody available for vaccine researchers. A collaboration between PATH, Baylor College of Medicine and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has made a monoclonal antibody (mAb) specific for SARS-CoV-1 available to researchers globally. This mAb can support the development of vaccines for SARS-CoV-1 and its evolving variants, as well as future characterization of novel and multivalent coronavirus vaccines. SARS-CoV-1, responsible for the 2003 SARS outbreak and a cousin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, is a respiratory virus with a high mortality rate. There currently is no licensed vaccine to protect against the disease, despite its pandemic potential. In addition, there are limited SARS-CoV-1 specific antibodies available for vaccine development or therapeutic indications. Through this collaboration, scientists from Baylor produced high-quality recombinant SARS-CoV-1 RBD proteins, vaccinated mice, and tested selected mAbs for their functionality. The use of various techniques to characterize the binding sites and pseudovirus neutralization helped establish a toolbox of mAbs with identified key epitopes within the RBD and discriminate vaccine antigens. Selected hybridoma cultures were shipped to PATH for further screening and down-selection, validation, scale-up production, and distribution. Manufacturers can potentially use the resulting mAb to quantify SARS-CoV-1 spike protein in complex vaccine formulations. These efforts were conducted by: * Dr. Jeroen Pollet, associate professor in pediatric tropical medicine at Baylor; * Dr. Wen-Hsiang Chen, associate professor in pediatric tropical medicine at Baylor; * Dr. Uli Strych, associate professor in pediatric tropical medicine at Baylor and director for strategic initiatives and program development of the Texas Children's Center for Vaccine Development; and * Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, senior associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor and co-director of the Texas Children's Center for Vaccine Development. "Access to well-characterized reference antibodies is essential for evaluating the much-needed emerging pan-coronavirus vaccine candidates and ensuring consistent product development across laboratories," Strych said. "We are pleased that this collaboration has made this resource broadly available to support coronavirus vaccine research worldwide." A full characterization report will be provided along with the antibody, detailing the specificity across different antigens and vaccine formats, based on data produced by Baylor and PATH. To help ensure equitable access, the antibody generated is available for a small handling charge and the cost of shipping for use by vaccine researchers and manufacturers who are developing vaccines for use in countries with low- and middle-income economies. Providing these open resources is one component of PATH's ongoing work with partners to advance the development of vaccines that are low-cost, broadly protective and tailored for use in low-resource settings. New typhoid conjugate vaccine from EuBiologics receives WHO prequalification. August 26, 2026 by PATH This important milestone could provide countries with an additional option for typhoid vaccination and can contribute to a sustainable supply of typhoid conjugate vaccines. Seattle, United States and Seoul, Republic of Korea - EuTYPH-C Inj.(R) Multi-dose, a new typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) manufactured by EuBiologics in the Republic of Korea, has been prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO). This brings the total number of WHO-prequalified TCVs to five and represents another important step toward expanding global access to typhoid vaccination. Demand for TCVs is high in typhoid-endemic countries. TCVs, recommended by WHO, have several advantages compared to older typhoid vaccines; notably, they provide longer-lasting protection, only require one dose, and can be given to children as young as 6 months of age, allowing for inclusion in routine immunization. However, TCVs are not always affordable or accessible for low-income countries. Development of additional TCVs from diverse manufacturers can help strengthen supply, support greater affordability, and expand access for countries seeking to introduce TCVs as part of their typhoid prevention and control strategies. Importantly, WHO prequalification enables EuTYPH-C Inj.(R) Multi-dose to be considered for procurement by United Nations agencies and for use in Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance-supported immunization programs. It is approved for use in children and adults aged 6 months to 45 years. PATH supported the EuTYPH-C Inj.(R) Multi-dose Phase 3 clinical study in Kenya and Senegal, as well as supported EuBiologics through WHO prequalification pre-submission meetings and clinical assessment responses. PATH is now collaborating with EuBiologics on a follow-up study evaluating the persistence of immune responses approximately 3 to 3.5 years after vaccination among children who participated in the previous Phase 3 study. Final results from the study are expected in early 2027. Port Authority awards $10 million contract to Wi-Tronix for new onboard technology to improve maintenance of railcar fleet. August 25, 2026 Real-time monitoring will help PATH identify and address railcar problems faster, keeping more trains in service and reducing delays for riders. New system creates a single connected platform for onboard train data, replacing time-consuming manual retrieval and supporting federal compliance. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has awarded a $10 million contract to Wi-Tronix to deploy new onboard technology across the railcar fleet for the PATH commuter rail. The investment will support PATH's regulatory compliance and improve service reliability for millions of riders by providing real-time visibility of onboard mechanical issues of each railcar. The Wi-Tronix technology supports PATH's compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements, including a FAST Act mandate for onboard image and audio recording. By modernizing how this information is captured and accessed, PATH can retrieve data remotely, respond more efficiently to breakdowns and improve car availability during service disruptions, resulting in fewer delays. PATH will install the Wi-Tronix technology on more than half of PATH's fleet of 422 cars, with installation and implementation expected to be complete by the FRA deadline in October 2027. Through its partnership with the private-public Transit Tech Lab, PATH has increasingly embraced new technology in its operations as the 118-year-old commuter railroad modernizes its operations, from daily service to maintenance to customer communications. The Transit Tech Lab, which is managed by the Partnership Fund for New York City, provides a pathway for New York City-area transit agencies to test innovative technologies that address operational challenges. The contract award follows a multi-year collaboration that began in 2023 through the Transit Tech Lab program, allowing PATH to evaluate Wi-Tronix's technology in a live transit environment. The PATH tests expanded to a larger deployment of the Wi-Tronix technology after a 30-month pilot. The contract includes Wi-Tronix's continued maintenance and upkeep of the technology. Turning malnutrition referrals into recovery: How collaboration is saving lives in Nigeria. August 6, 2026 by PATH In Akwa Ibom State, RHCC is working with the State Ministry of Health and Helen Keller Intl to bridge the gap between malnutrition diagnosis and treatment. In Nigeria, an estimated 2 million children suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) - a life-threatening depletion of nutrients. Although SAM is easily treatable with a high-calorie dietary supplement, only one in five children receive care due to limited access to health facilities equipped with commodities and trained staff to treat malnutrition. Closing the gap between diagnosis and treatment became an urgent goal for the Rotary Healthy Communities Challenge (RHCC) when community health workers (CHWs) in RHCC-supported communities reported that children with malnutrition could not access treatment at the local health facility. Through a collaboration between the Akwa Ibom State government, PATH, and Helen Keller Intl, temporary clinics brought treatment to communities and supported the screening and recovery of children. Identifying the gap. Implemented by PATH and in partnership with local Rotary members, RHCC is supported by The Rotary Foundation and the Gates Foundation. The project provides technical and logistical support to the Akwa Ibom and Kebbi State primary health care development agencies to strengthen community-based health care for children through the implementation of integrated community case management (iCCM). iCCM provides quality care for the diagnosis and treatment of malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia in children under five years of age through community-level health care, and referral for severe cases of these diseases. Trained CHWs serve as a critical bridge between households and health facilities, providing lifesaving health services and information to families in rural communities. As a part of their training, CHWs learn to screen children ages 6-59 months for malnutrition using mid-upper arm circumference straps - a simple, color-coded tool that can reveal whether a child is at risk based on the circumference of their arm. The green zone indicates a healthy child, yellow signals moderate malnutrition, and red denotes SAM and the need for immediate referral to a health facility for treatment. After RHCC-supported services launched in October 2025, CHWs in Akwa Ibom State began identifying children with SAM and referring them to nearby health facilities. However, when these families arrived, they could not receive services - the facilities did not have trained staff, or the specialized therapeutic food needed to treat SAM. The missing piece. Also in Akwa Ibom, Helen Keller Intl, through its Founders Pledge-funded Life Saving Nutrition Project under their Project Resource Optimization (PRO) program, trains health workers and stocks facilities with ready-to-use therapeutic food in four local government areas. However, these areas did not overlap with the RHCC-supported communities where children with malnutrition were identified. To address the gap in nutrition services in RHCC-supported areas, PATH, the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Helen Keller Intl, and the State Nutrition Unit joined forces to provide lifesaving services for children in the state. After a series of planning meetings, the group designed an innovative solution: 12 temporary nutrition out-patient therapeutic program (OTP) clinics established in two locations within each of the six RHCC-supported local government areas - Ikono, Ibesikpo Asutan, Eket, Onna, Oruk Anam, and Nsit Ibom. Six days that sparked change. From April 13 to 18, 2025, CHWs fanned out across their communities, reaching out to caregivers of children who had already been identified as malnourished to refer them to the temporary OTP clinic. The response was overwhelming. "I didn't know what to do until the CHW assigned to my community visited... I agreed to come on the day of the clinic as I was told because I had no other option. It is still like a miracle to me, because my son is now fully recovered." - Mother of a recovered child, Akwa Ibom State Helen Keller Intl and the State Nutrition Unit teams set up clinics to screen and classify cases of malnutrition. Children with moderate malnutrition received micronutrient supplements and counseling. Those with SAM were enrolled into treatment and given weekly weight-based rations of ready-to-use therapeutic food or RUTF, a nutrient-dense, high calorie peanut-based paste that provides life-saving nutrition. In just six days, 323 children were screened. Of these, 108 children were diagnosed with a form of acute malnutrition - including 58 with SAM, who were enrolled in treatment immediately. This care came at no cost to families. Helen Keller Intl covered nutrition services, allowing families to access lifesaving care without financial barriers. "I was worried I would not be able to afford the cost of treatment. The CHW told me it would be free. Now my daughter is fine, laughing and playing around. I hope this can be extended to other places." - Mother of a recovered child, Akwa Ibom State A local response becomes a lasting system. What began as a short-term emergency response revealed something larger: the demand for these services exceeded what anyone had anticipated. The nutrition OTP clinics drew in families whose children had never been tested before, proof of just how many children were slipping through the cracks. Helen Keller Intl responded by expanding its Life Saving Nutrition Project to cover all six RHCC-supported local government areas in Akwa Ibom, and the SAM referral sites which started as temporary have become established SAM management facilities managed by Helen Keller Intl. Health workers will be trained, and facilities will be fully stocked, with the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency overseeing the system's sustainability. The communities of Akwa Ibom did not need more resources. They needed to be connected to existing resources - across funding streams, across organizations, across the gap between identification and treatment. Leadership from the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency is now exploring ways to institutionalize this collaborative model across the state. This experience demonstrated what is possible when organizations unite around a shared goal.
