About the job

Requirements
  • Experience leading through engineering managers across multiple teams, with accountability for delivery, people and organisational performance.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including several years leading Engineering or Development Managers in a product or SaaS environment.
  • A track record of owning delivery outcomes across multiple teams and squads, ideally in a product-led SaaS, private-equity-backed or similarly performance-oriented environment where predictability and efficiency are closely tracked.
  • Experience scaling an engineering organisation and leading through change or transformation, including building consistent practice from process immaturity.
  • Experience coaching and developing engineering managers.
  • Commercial and resource-management capability, including capacity planning, headcount trade-offs and organisational design decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively with Product leadership, aligning delivery capacity and commitments with roadmap priorities.
  • Experience using engineering metrics for delivery, quality, reliability and team health to drive performance.
  • Technical depth to engage credibly with Compass' engineering stack and technical leaders, and understand trade-offs relating to scalability, maintainability, security and reliability.
  • A valid Employee Working With Children Check is required before commencing employment.
  • A satisfactory National Police Check is required before commencing employment.
  • Unrestricted work rights in Australia must be verified before commencing employment.
Responsibilities
  • Own engineering delivery performance across all squads, partnering with Product to ensure capacity, priorities and roadmap commitments are realistic, transparent and aligned.
  • Establish a consistent engineering operating model for planning, estimation and release practices so teams can plan, prioritise and deliver predictably at scale.
  • Own engineering capacity planning and allocation across squads, balancing strategic priorities, delivery commitments and team capability.
  • Establish and monitor engineering performance metrics covering roadmap predictability, cycle time, quality, reliability, technical debt and team health, and report them to the CPTO and executive leadership team.
  • Identify delivery risks and dependencies early, drive resolution, or escalate material trade-offs to the CPTO.
  • Directly manage and develop Development Managers, set clear expectations, coach them on people leadership, and hold them accountable for squad delivery and team health.
  • Own engineering headcount planning, hiring and onboarding in partnership with the CPTO and People & Culture.
  • Assess engineering team structures, skills and capabilities to ensure the organisation is designed for current and future priorities.
  • Build engineering career pathways and capability frameworks for engineers and managers.
  • Own engineering engagement and retention, monitor team health signals, and champion a strong engineering culture.
  • Partner with technical leaders to ensure engineering decisions support scalability, maintainability, security, reliability and delivery outcomes; own engineering quality and technical execution without being the ultimate architecture owner.
  • Champion consistent engineering standards, tooling and ways of working across squads.
  • Balance delivery pace against technical debt and quality, escalating trade-offs to the CPTO when they affect strategy or architecture.
  • Partner with the Head of Technology to ensure engineering teams implement and maintain reliability, security and compliance standards across Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
  • Represent Engineering day to day to Product, People & Culture, the Head of Technology and other functional leaders.
  • Give the CPTO clear, timely visibility into delivery status, risks and people matters.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience across distributed or multi-entity engineering teams; exposure to Australia, the United Kingdom or Ireland is a plus.
  • Direct experience with C#/.NET, React.js, Node.js and TypeScript.

Starting Again: what has changed in Higher Education since 2003?

Starting Again: what has changed in Higher Education since 2003? I first began working with university staff-development teams in 2003, and I am delighted to continue my long association with the Staff Development Forum. In this new article for SDF, I look at what has changed since then - from the growth of digital learning to the arrival of AI and the increasingly pressured environment in which university staff work. I also discuss Student Compass and its new pilot with Heriot-Watt University Students' Union, which will be available to approximately 10,000 students. Methodist Ladies' College selects Compass Private to support a more connected school experience.

Methodist Ladies' College selects Compass Private to support a more connected school experience. Methodist Ladies' College (MLC) has selected Compass as its new Student Information System (SIS), following a structured evaluation process involving staff from across the College. MLC will implement Compass Private, Compass's bespoke solution to support the operational needs of independent schools. The decision reflects the College's continued investment in systems that strengthen learning, wellbeing and connection with families, while supporting the breadth and complexity of the student experience. "At MLC we are always looking for ways to strengthen the systems that support our students, staff and families," said Julia Shea, Principal of Methodist Ladies' College. "Compass Private provides a strong platform to help connect information across learning, wellbeing and the broader life of the College, supporting our integrated approach to education." Compass was selected for its strong capability, its understanding of MLC's context and requirements, and its alignment with the College's vision for a connected and sustainable future. By improving how information flows across the school, the platform will give staff access to the insights they need to support each student, while streamlining processes and reducing administrative burden. "Strong systems help ensure our staff have the information they need to support each student's learning and wellbeing, while allowing them to spend more time focused on teaching, mentoring and supporting students," Shea said. The platform will also support families to stay connected with their daughter's learning, wellbeing and experience at school, helping strengthen engagement across the broader school community. John de la Motte, CEO of Compass Education, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to delivering value for school communities through thoughtful, purpose-built technology. "We're proud to partner with MLC and support the College with a platform that aligns to its vision, values and the way it works," said John de la Motte. "Our focus is not only on delivering strong technology, but on being a trusted long-term partner, working closely with schools to ensure the systems they invest in support meaningful outcomes for staff, students and families." Throughout implementation, MLC will work in partnership with Compass, with the College also helping shape functionality designed for the independent school context. "We look forward to working closely with Compass as we implement Compass Private, including contributing to the development of functionality that supports the needs of independent schools and the distinctive way MLC operates," Shea said. The partnership further cements Compass's standing in the education technology and school management sector, particularly among independent schools seeking a trusted, future-ready platform capable of supporting the full complexity of school operations while enhancing connection across the school community.
