Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree and/or teaching certification in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Special Education, or Elementary Education; alternatively, an Associate's degree or equivalent in one of those fields; alternatively, a Child Development Associate credential and two years of work experience related to the care and development of children.
  • Compliance with Act 33, including Child Abuse History documentation, Criminal History documentation, and FBI fingerprinting.
  • A biennial physical examination, an initial Mantoux tuberculosis test, and freedom from infectious or communicable disease.
  • Ability to work with and relate well to young children and coworkers.
  • Ability to supervise adults.
  • Successful completion of New Staff Orientation and mandated reporter training before starting in the classroom.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations and ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement a developmentally appropriate before- and after-school program using the YMCA School Age Care Curriculum.
  • Prepare and execute lesson plans with documented learning standards, adapting activities to children's ages, developmental levels, and interests.
  • Provide outdoor activities and at least one structured activity each day when appropriate.
  • Establish rules, limits, and fair discipline techniques, and use positive approaches to support constructive behavior.
  • Identify children who may have special needs and help them gain acceptance among peers.
  • Maintain meaningful, consistent interactions with children and serve as a positive role model.
  • Maintain communication with parents and school district personnel through newsletters, conferences, notes, posters, and verbal communication.
  • Respond to questions, concerns, and complaints professionally and promptly.
  • Supervise assistant teachers, conduct biannual evaluations, assign duties, provide guidance and support, hold staff conferences, and involve staff in program planning.
  • Record and maintain attendance, meal counts, menus, time sheets, payments, accident reports, illness tracking, health and safety checklists, and child records.
  • Use the ADP time system and approve assistant teachers' time sheets when required.
  • Report accidents immediately by phone and submit written reports within 24 hours.
  • Supervise children safely, maintain confidentiality, escort children to and from school where applicable, and control unauthorized access to program resources.
  • Administer first aid and medication when necessary, maintain the first aid kit, conduct fire drills, and ensure emergency information accompanies children off premises.
  • Carry out child-care licensing requirements and keep emergency contact information current.
  • Obtain and order food, maintain cleanliness and supplies, prepare and serve breakfast and snacks according to CACFP guidelines, and maintain site inventories and petty cash records.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and required trainings, complete a quarterly service project, secure the building, and work during school in-service days, vacations, delays, dismissals, and closings as required.
  • Operate the site according to YMCA Child Care Services guidelines and contractual agreements, and follow agency policies and procedures.
