Requirements
  • An MD or equivalent degree.
  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility by the American Board of Surgery.
  • A demonstrated commitment to academic surgery and an established or emerging research program at the intersection of surgery, healthcare, and data science.
  • A commitment to research and programmatic development, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, grant submissions or funding, development of data-driven clinical or research programs, or other relevant scholarly accomplishments.
  • U.S. citizenship, permanent resident status, or appropriate work authorization.
  • Agreement to comply with the bylaws, policies, and procedures of the Medical College of Wisconsin, including the Information for Faculty handbook and Code of Conduct.
  • Acknowledgement of the Medical College of Wisconsin vaccine policy.
  • Obtaining and maintaining a Wisconsin medical license and Drug Enforcement Administration registration.
  • Acceptance by the Medical College of Wisconsin for professional liability insurance coverage.
  • Obtaining and maintaining medical staff membership and clinical privileges at assigned hospitals.
  • Eligibility to participate in Medicare and Medicaid programs and continued ability to be credentialed for treatment of managed care patients.
  • Eligibility to participate in federal procurement and non-procurement programs.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active surgical practice within the Department of Surgery aligned with clinical training and subspecialty expertise.
  • Develop an independent, externally funded research program at the intersection of surgery and data science, using clinical and data resources of the Medical College of Wisconsin and its health system partners.
  • Collaborate across surgery, data science, informatics, engineering, and the broader clinical and research enterprise.
  • Develop, evaluate, and translate data-driven approaches to improve surgical care and outcomes.
  • Teach medical students, surgical residents, fellows, and other trainees while attending on the inpatient service and during outpatient clinical activities.
  • Teach graduate coursework and seminars and mentor trainees in the Data Science Institute.
  • Contribute to the development of surgical data science and artificial intelligence at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
  • Participate in administrative and service functions of the department, hospital, institute, or Medical College of Wisconsin committees.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience or expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, clinical informatics, predictive analytics, large language models and generative artificial intelligence, computer vision, multimodal data science, clinical decision support, human–artificial intelligence interaction, implementation and evaluation of artificial intelligence-enabled technologies, or other computational approaches to improving surgical care and outcomes.
  • Opportunities may include leadership of collaborative research initiatives and development of programs focused on human–artificial intelligence interaction, clinical artificial intelligence evaluation, and translation of data science into surgical practice.
