About the company

Tesla makes electric cars and batteries that store power for homes and utilities, and it develops self-driving software and humanoid robots. In 2023, its Model Y became the first electric vehicle to rank as the world's best-selling car. Buyers order the Model 3 sedan, Model Y SUV, or Cybertruck pickup directly from Tesla instead of through dealers, and they charge on its Supercharger fast-charging network. It also sells Megapack and Powerwall batteries, runs a robotaxi service, and charges drivers a monthly fee for self-driving software that still needs their supervision. Tesla was founded in 2003, with Elon Musk as its lead early investor and a recognized co-founder, and it is based in Austin, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are growing again: revenue rose 26% to $28.2 billion in the June 2026 quarter, after falling 3% in 2025.
  • Software adds income beyond cars: paid users of its supervised self-driving feature rose 56% to 1.48 million by June 2026.
  • Hiring is back: Tesla's headcount grew 7% to 134,785 by December 2025, after layoffs shrank it 11% in 2024.

What critics are saying

  • Growth isn't reaching profit: operating profit fell 57% to $398 million in the June 2026 quarter, a 1.4% margin.
  • Alphabet's Waymo is far ahead in robotaxis: Texas records in May 2026 listed 577 Waymo vehicles to Tesla's 42.
  • Stock grants have lost value: Tesla shares fell 17% in 2026 through October 8, after a December 2025 record.

What makes Tesla unique

  • Energy storage punches above its weight: Tesla's energy unit made 13% of 2025 sales but 22% of gross profit.
  • Tesla set the charging standard: Ford, GM and all major EV sellers in North America adopted its plug by 2024.
  • Robots are written into Musk's pay: his 2025 award sets goals of 1 million humanoid robots and 1 million robotaxis.

Insider-backed growth stocks to watch: CoreWeave, Tesla and Cerebras after the AI tech slide

A slide in US technology shares in October has shaken investors' patience with expensive AI growth stories. Simply Wall St says that may favour smaller, fast-growing companies with heavy insider ownership. It highlights three stocks. CoreWeave, an AI cloud provider focused on GPU compute, earns about $7.6 billion from data processing services and has a market value of roughly $30.3 billion. Its model is capital-intensive, with Nvidia dominant on hardware supply. Tesla makes about $91.3 billion from automotive and $12.3 billion from energy generation and storage. Its market value is near $1.6 trillion, and it is pursuing AI, robotaxis, humanoid robots, and battery storage. Cerebras Systems builds wafer-scale AI hardware. In March 2026, AWS added its CS-3 systems to Amazon Bedrock, promising up to 15x faster inference than monolithic GPU setups.

Tariffs, diesel and chips add about $2B in costs each for GM and Ford this year

General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis reported higher revenue this quarter, driven by sales of big cars and trucks. But rising costs for steel, copper, computer chips, and diesel are squeezing them. GM and Ford each expect these costs, which some companies label "commodity and logistics," to add about $2 billion this year. Analysts say the term largely stands in for tariffs and inflation. EV sales have fallen since the federal tax credit ended, though GM says it is not giving up on them. Hybrid sales are up almost 27%, according to Edmunds. Meanwhile, Exxon doubled its earnings and Chevron's rose 180%, as wars in Iran and Ukraine disrupted oil supply.

Tesla $1,000 stake could be worth $1,182 by 2030 in base case, model says

A $1,000 investment in Tesla could be worth about $1,182.08 by 2030, an 18.21% return, according to a 24/7 Wall St model. Its bull case reaches $1,513.49, while the bear case lands at $999.35. Over five years, to October 22, 2031, the base case is $1,269.40, or 4.89% a year. The one-year target is $404.84, 4.75% above the $383.33 trading price, which earns a hold rating. The model points to three growth drivers: more than 1.7 million paid Full Self-Driving customers, Robotaxi expansion to Dallas, and energy storage demand. Energy gross margin rose from 20.4% to 33.1%. Risks include a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 402. Operating income fell 55.79% and free cash flow dropped 61.63%. Shares are down 14.76% this year.

Tariffs, chips and diesel add $2B in costs for Ford and GM despite strong truck sales

US automakers reported higher third-quarter revenue, but say costs are climbing. Steel, copper, computer chips and diesel have all become pricier, partly because of tariffs the Trump administration has imposed since 2025. General Motors expects materials and diesel to cost it as much as $2 billion this year, and it still pays about $2.5 billion in tariffs. Ford expects a year-over-year headwind of about $2 billion from commodities, memory chips and logistics. Stellantis will give more detail in the fourth quarter. Demand remains firm. GM's light-duty truck sales rose 9%, and Stellantis' US pickup sales rose 34%. The average new vehicle price was just over $50,000 in September. Electric vehicle sales fell after the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, while hybrid sales rose 27%.

Tesla shares rose 9% last week to $407.46 on speculation about a merger with SpaceX, even as the company's fundamentals weakened. Barclays upgraded the stock to Overweight, citing a potential deal, and reports said the two companies have formed committees to discuss one. Tesla has issued no official release. Third-quarter revenue was $28.05 billion, roughly flat year over year. Operating income fell 56% and free cash flow dropped 62% to $1.53 billion, while capex rose 110.5%. The stock now trades 0.44% below the consensus analyst target of $409.27. Of 44 analysts, 21 rate it Hold, and only four rate it Sell or Strong Sell. On the positive side, Tesla reported its highest vehicle backlog in four years, 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions, and $45.45 billion in cash.
