About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of hardware product management experience, including ownership of shipping products and not only new product introduction.
  • A track record as a directly responsible individual, accountable for outcomes and comfortable with ambiguity and parallel workstreams.
  • Experience owning sustaining work, including field quality, warranty and return merchandise authorization analysis, firmware release decisions, and root cause analysis with engineering.
  • A track record of cost reduction and margin improvement on products already in production.
  • Experience with component obsolescence, second sourcing, and supply continuity.
  • Comfort making competitive and pricing decisions in a crowded consumer category.
  • Fluent, frequent use of artificial intelligence tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Grok, along with building personal tools and getting others to adopt them.
  • Ability to own a business case, unit economics, and margin trade-offs for leadership decisions.
  • Ability to lead cross-functionally through influence and escalate effectively without formal reporting authority.
  • Experience running a formal hardware gate process and maintaining disciplined processes to support speed.
Responsibilities
  • Own the roadmap for EVSE, Vue, and Smart Plug, and prioritize effort across the three product lines.
  • Own competitive positioning and pricing in crowded categories by tracking competitor launches and assessing their implications for the roadmap.
  • Build a business case for each proposed change, including cost, margin, volume, and payback, using artificial intelligence as appropriate.
  • Use support tickets, telemetry, reviews, and return merchandise authorization data to identify and prioritize fixes and new development.
  • Own the sustaining roadmap, including firmware releases, field-quality issues, and warranty and reliability trends feeding back into requirements.
  • Drive root-cause analysis of field failures with Engineering, Quality, and Customer Support, and decide whether issues are addressed through firmware, hardware, or documentation.
  • Partner with Customer Support to engineer out leading drivers of customer contacts and returns.
  • Use artificial intelligence to analyze failure data, logs, and schematics and prepare for discussions with subject matter experts.
  • Drive cost reduction through component substitutions, design-for-cost changes, and supplier negotiation while protecting margin.
  • Manage component obsolescence and single-source risk by qualifying replacements and second sources in advance.
  • Drive compliance continuity with Engineering and Compliance, including recertification when components or designs change, for applicable standards such as UL, FCC, and Energy Star.
  • Work with Operations on volume planning, yield, and quality to maintain supply in line with demand.
  • Define and drive hardware revisions, new variants, and SKU additions through the product development lifecycle gates at a cycle time appropriate to the change.
  • Write requirements, negotiate scope and timelines with Engineering and Operations, establish shared commitments, and make final decisions about when and how changes ship.
  • Own launch and go-to-market for revisions and new SKUs with Marketing, Business Development, and Customer Support, including channel and support readiness.
  • Own end-of-availability and end-of-life decisions and create transition plans for customers and channels.
  • Automate and optimize manual, slow, or expensive steps in the product development lifecycle while preserving gates, deliverables, and approvals.
  • Promote artificial-intelligence-enabled execution across the team and partners to improve delivery speed.
  • Build and share tools, prompts, and workflows rather than requesting additional headcount.
  • Assess where artificial intelligence is not working and provide evidence to inform the company’s adoption approach.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with electric vehicle charging, energy monitoring, smart plugs, or other connected home hardware.
  • Experience with consumer electronics sold at retail and at direct-to-consumer scale.
  • Experience with recertification, including UL, FCC, or Energy Star, after design or component changes.
  • High-volume manufacturing quality experience, including DPPM, FAI, yield, and return merchandise authorization analysis.
  • Experience with fleet telemetry and cohort analysis on a large install base.
  • A career spanning product management and program management in a fast-paced, test- and validation-driven environment.

About the company

Emporia Energy designs and sells a home energy management system centered on the Vue Energy Monitor, which installs in a home's electrical panel to provide real-time, circuit-level energy data that users access through a mobile app. The platform integrates with Emporia Smart Plugs, Level 2 EV chargers, and home battery storage to automate energy use and shift consumption to off-peak times, reducing costs, with additional demand response and vehicle-to-grid capabilities. The company earns revenue from direct hardware sales and a white-label IoT platform for enterprise clients such as automotive manufacturers, utilities, and contractors. Its goal is to make energy efficiency affordable and accessible while supporting the energy transition by helping users monitor, optimize, and automate energy use.

Emporia Energy launches Texas Electricity Plan with free daily EV Charging windows.

Emporia Energy launches Texas Electricity Plan with free daily EV Charging windows. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Littleton, CO, June 24, 2026 - Emporia Energy today launched an EV Charging Savings Electricity Plan in Texas that gives drivers free daily windows to charge their electric vehicles. Customers keep plugging in the way they already do; the Emporia charger schedules each session into the free hours, so charging costs drop without anyone having to think about it. The free windows run both overnight and midday, on 100 percent renewable energy. Eligible customers can enroll online in minutes, with no equipment to install and no interruption to service, and keep their existing utility. Drivers still under contract with another provider can set a start date up to 90 days out. Emporia already does two things most home energy companies don't: it shows households exactly how their energy is used, circuit by circuit, and it manages their largest loads through one app that works with the EV, solar, and devices they already own, whatever the brand. With more than 400,000 customers and one of the best-selling residential EV chargers in the U.S., Emporia has the hardware in the home and the data to use it well. The electricity plan adds the missing piece. Now the same charger and app that track a customer's energy also lower the bill, by shifting EV charging to the hours when power is cheapest and cleanest. "Most EV charging already happens while people sleep. Since we make the charger and now supply the electricity, we can automatically charge when power is abundant and costs less. Customers don't have to think about it. They wake up to a charged car and a lower bill. That's good for homeowners, and when enough homes do it together, it's good for the grid too." * Shawn McLaughlin, founder and CEO, Emporia Energy The EV Charging Savings Plan is offered in Texas (within ERCOT territory) in partnership with Light, a licensed retail electricity provider. A customer's utility, such as CenterPoint or Oncor, does not change and continues to deliver power and maintain the lines. Demand management built into the plan. Flexible loads like EV charging can be shifted to periods when electricity is abundant, easing strain on the grid while helping customers lower costs. Emporia expects managing demand this way to become a larger part of how the modern grid works. Emporia EV chargers are eligible for more than 100 utility and grid programs across the country - including rebates, demand response, time-of-use incentives, and active managed charging - and already participate in programs like the Massachusetts Clean Peak Standard. The company is developing aggregator programs in additional states, including Colorado and Maine. The Texas plan extends that work to retail electricity: as customers enroll, their charging shifts into off-peak hours, a form of demand-side management built into the plan from day one. Looking ahead. A home battery plan is in design and Emporia is planning to expand into new markets within the next year. Over time, the company aims to connect millions of homes into a demand-side network that can help balance the grid, and to operate one of the nation's largest virtual power plants. Texas is the first deregulated market. About Emporia Energy. Emporia Energy builds the home energy management platform that helps Americans see, control, and now power their homes more intelligently. With more than 400,000 customers and one of the best-selling residential EV chargers in the U.S., Emporia connects homes into a demand-side energy network that lowers bills today and is building toward one of the largest such networks in the country. Retail electricity plans are offered in Texas (ERCOT) in partnership with Light, a licensed retail electricity provider. Learn more at emporiaenergy.com.
