  • At least 7 years of backend development experience, including at least 5 years architecting systems in Amazon Web Services.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript and SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Kinesis, Elastic Container Service, and Identity and Access Management.
  • Current hands-on practice with agentic development tooling, including structured context, decomposed reviewable work, and agent-assisted review.
  • Accountability for every line of AI-assisted output submitted for review.
  • Experience building LLM- or agent-backed production capabilities, including inference integration, tool and function calling, retrieval, evaluation, or guardrails, or clear evidence of ability to learn these capabilities quickly.
  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling production data or event pipelines.
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines, infrastructure as code, and containerized workloads.
  • Experience designing REST and/or GraphQL APIs in distributed systems.
  • Experience carrying production on-call responsibility for systems built.
  • A track record of leading a significant migration or platform initiative to completion.
  • Solid data modeling and systems design fundamentals, including observability and cost design.
  • Clear written and verbal communication and the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical partners.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • High initiative, self-motivation, and the ability to mentor and inspire engineering teams.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary information.
  • Ability to maintain a professional atmosphere in a fast-paced environment with numerous interactions and interruptions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members and colleagues.
  • Comfort with office pets.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and operate shared backend services and platform capabilities used by other engineering teams.
  • Own service reliability end to end, including on-call rotation participation, incident response, and operational health.
  • Establish and improve service templates, deployment pipelines, observability defaults, and infrastructure as code.
  • Design for scalability, availability, and operational cost and make those trade-offs explicit.
  • Extend the platform's AI capability through inference paths, agent infrastructure, evaluation, and production guardrails.
  • Lead migrations of production systems serving live connected devices while preventing customer disruption and preserving rollback capability.
  • Model connected-hardware failure modes and design for them proactively.
  • Retire legacy paths through dual runs, backfills, verification, and safe cutovers.
  • Build and scale ingestion pipelines for high-volume device telemetry and route it into the data and analytics platform.
  • Design data contracts and schemas that survive change and partner with Data Engineering, Data Science, and Analytics.
  • Instrument pipelines for freshness, completeness, and cost so problems are detected upstream.
  • Own work crossing systems and team boundaries, anticipate integration problems, and drive them to resolution.
  • Surface risks early and propose alternatives with clear paths forward.
  • Maintain a high quality bar in code review and resolve systemic defects.
  • Mentor engineers and raise team capability.
  • Represent the team's technical position to Product, technical program management, and partner engineering teams and translate trade-offs for non-technical partners.
  • Champion testing, code quality, security, and observability best practices.
  • Work agentically by decomposing work, curating context and skill files, and reviewing generated diffs.
  • Improve how the team builds with AI through better skills, review gates, and assessment of agent usefulness.
  • Define and drive technical direction for the broader software engineering practice.
  • Perform additional responsibilities when required.

About the company

Whisker creates connected pet care devices, starting with automated litter boxes and Wi-Fi feeders. The Litter-Robot uses a patented rotational sift to separate waste into a sealed, carbon-filtered drawer, leaving a clean litter bed; Litter-Robot 4 adds SafeCat OmniSense, real-time waste and litter tracking, and quieter cycles, controlled via the Whisker app. The Feeder-Robot is a Wi-Fi enabled automatic feeder that schedules portions, supports multiple meals, includes anti-jam technology and a battery backup, and can operate offline. The company sells direct-to-consumer and through retailers like PetSmart and Best Buy, with the goal of expanding a line of connected pet products that simplify care and provide health insights.

Whisker rebrands GreatLitter as Lit™ to target wider cat owner market beyond Litter-Robot users

Whisker has rebranded its GreatLitter product as Lit, a standalone premium cat litter designed to reach customers beyond its existing Litter-Robot user base. The formula remains unchanged: 100% naturally sun-dried sodium bentonite clay sourced from a family farm in Wyoming, free of additives and chemicals. The rebrand aligns with Whisker's "The Future is Feline" platform and positions Lit as "Wildly clean litter." Available in 20-pound bags starting at $30, Lit is sold exclusively through Litterbox.com, Whisker.com, and Litter-Robot.com in the US. To support distribution, Whisker has opened a 47,000-square-foot fulfilment facility in North Las Vegas, which began operations in July. The facility complements the company's existing operations centre in Juneau, Wisconsin. Existing GreatLitter subscribers will automatically transition to Lit packaging.
