- A high school diploma or GED and graduation from a Medical Assistant program, or eligibility for certification by the American Medical Technologist, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Health Career Association, or National Association for Health Professionals within 12 months of hire.
- One of the following certifications is required within 12 months of hire: Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support/CPR certification is required within 30 days of hire.
- Maintain required credentials.
- Six months of medical assistant experience or completion of a medical assistant externship.
- Ability to maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with employees, physicians, patients, families, and the public.
- Working knowledge of ICD-9/10 coding, Current Procedural Terminology coding, and insurance procedures.
- Ability to work a predetermined schedule with occasional evenings or weekends based on patient-care needs and to float to other clinic practices as needed.
- Assist providers with the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas, including examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressing changes.
- Perform general administrative duties in accordance with The Joint Commission, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, National Committee for Quality Assurance, government standards, and company policies.
- Deliver appropriate patient care at a proficient level and provide cross-trained care in a Patient-Centered Medical Home setting.
- Review patient charts before scheduled appointments to confirm requested laboratory work and diagnostic procedures are complete and reports are accessible to the provider.
- Review, obtain, and record patient vital signs, reason for visit, and related information using the Electronic Medical Record according to guidelines.
- Perform patient-access tasks, including taking messages and appropriately assisting providers with return calls to patients and pharmacies.
- Direct patients to examination rooms, prepare them for examinations, and notify providers of patient arrival and readiness.
- Assist providers with surgical procedures, gynecological examinations, diagnostic studies, and treatments.
- Operate and monitor medical equipment and hand instruments to providers.
- Conduct hearing, vision, breathing, and electrocardiogram testing and record results in patient charts.
- Administer medications as directed using the seven rights of medication administration.
- Perform venipuncture, collect urine specimens, and complete laboratory test procedures according to policy.
- Handle specimens using universal precautions.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations and notify the appropriate person during medical emergencies.
- Monitor patients during and after procedures for reactions and visible complications.
- Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors while meeting time-management, supply-management, productivity, and service-quality standards.
- Complete mandatory and continuing education and maintain skills competency.
- Support department goals and serve as a preceptor, mentor, and resource to less-experienced staff.
- Provide compassionate, personalized, safe, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Memorial Hermann Health System clinicians are using Epic's AI tool, Art, to help patients better understand their test results. The AI-powered assistant generates initial draft patient notes in clear, patient-friendly language as clinicians review lab and imaging results. Since implementation, patients have sent 32% fewer follow-up messages about test results when clinicians used Art's draft. The tool has helped Memorial Hermann's care teams write over 55,000 messages to patients, with clinicians saving an average of nine seconds per result comment. Memorial Hermann piloted the feature in December 2025 in their innovation clinic before expanding system-wide.
