Requirements
  • The candidate must be at least 20 years of age.
  • The candidate must understand youth work, work with school-age children, group management, and group work.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to provide overall supervision and management for school-age childcare programs.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to train, develop, supervise, and evaluate Youth Leaders and Aides.
  • The candidate must ensure the safety, health, and welfare of all participants and staff in the childcare program.
  • The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, be well organized, and be able to multitask.
  • The candidate must lead by example and model professionalism and competency for peers and employees.
  • The candidate must supervise participants and provide positive role modeling through interactions with participants and others associated with the program.
  • The candidate must meet program goals and expectations outlined in the Youth Program Policies and Procedures Handbook.
  • The candidate must be reliable and dependable.
  • The candidate must work a flexible schedule to meet program staffing and planning needs.
  • The candidate must exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making.
  • The candidate must communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • The candidate must develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • The candidate must successfully complete a comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex offender checks.
  • The candidate must complete mandatory Praesidium training and report child-abuse concerns.
Responsibilities
  • Assist Youth Directors with overall program operation and supervision of participants while adhering to program policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Research and develop creative programs, workshops, and activities to enhance the school-age childcare program.
  • Communicate with participants, parents, co-workers, and Department of Education and Department of Human Services contacts.
  • Relate to program participants with respect and understanding, respond sensitively to each child's needs, and provide guidance toward positive youth development.
  • Create a positive work and learning environment for staff and program participants.
  • Lead Youth Leaders, Aides, and Volunteers by providing support and opportunities for continuous training, growth, and leadership development.
  • Schedule and secure proper staff coverage and communicate regularly with the Program Director about staffing challenges.
  • Ensure that staff and participants respect the facility and property rules and expectations.
  • Maintain facilities, equipment, and supplies at the site in good, organized, and clean condition.
  • Assist with marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Assume responsibility for facilities, equipment, and supplies utilized by the program.
  • Assist with the YMCA of Honolulu's Annual Campaign.
  • Attend general and site-specific staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Youth Director or Program Executive.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate or bachelor's degree, or two years of college coursework, in recreation, education, social work, or another related field is preferred.
