GM targets 'eyes-off' autonomous driving for pickups, SUVs.

GM targets 'eyes-off' autonomous driving for pickups, SUVs. Post Views: 206 * Some industry executives have raised safety and liability questions around such tech * GM is working on a new software platform for future vehicles * GM says eyes-off system will expand beyond Cadillac Escalade IQ to pickups and large SUVs (Reuters) - General Motors plans to offer "eyes-off" autonomous driving on its highest-selling, most profitable vehicles - big pickup trucks and SUVs - as it seeks fresh revenue streams from heavy technology investments. Last year, GM said it would offer autonomous highway driving in 2028 on its pricey but light-selling Cadillac Escalade IQ, an electric SUV. On Wednesday, the automaker said it would expand the service to its pickup trucks and other large SUVs, without specifying a timeframe. Many assisted-driving systems control steering and speed in certain settings - sometimes hands-free - but require the driver to remain attentive. Those include Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system and GM's Super Cruise feature, which debuted about a decade ago. Only a few automakers have introduced eyes-off systems, including Mercedes-Benz, with service typically limited to small geographic areas at low speeds, such as in stop-and-go traffic. Some industry executives have said eyes-off driving that exchanges control back and forth from the car to the driver raises thorny safety and liability questions, and might not interest enough car shoppers. Sterling Anderson, GM's chief product officer who previously worked at autonomous-truck company Aurora, said GM is building "an autonomous system that operates safely on highways that actually gives you your time back." He said GM will eventually expand the service to other roads. New software brain. GM is developing a new software backbone for future vehicles to deliver the automated-driving system and other digital features, expecting drivers will be willing to pay for them. GM executives outlined the plans during an event in New York on Wednesday. A central computer will serve as the vehicle brain, allowing the car to receive remote updates like a smartphone. Tesla, Rivian and many Chinese automakers have jumped ahead of traditional automakers in designing the ability to beam software updates remotely to vehicles. Anderson said inside GM, he refers to the new vehicles as "robots." GM's plan to transform cars into rolling, updatable computers is crucial to compete with Chinese automakers and EV-only brands such as Tesla, said Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telemetry, an automotive research firm. If not, "they will fall even further behind the competitors." One reason traditional automakers have struggled with software is that they have long outsourced much of that work to suppliers, car executives and analysts have said. Anderson said GM is developing its new "central compute" model in-house, giving the company more control over updates and functionality. "The world opens up when you control the software across the system in a way that it never was when various suppliers controlled" the car's digital connections, Anderson said. Targeting higher profit margins. Automakers reap average profit margins of around 10% selling vehicles. Software-related services can reach 30% to 40% margins, according to analysis firm PwC. In a report last month, UBS estimated GM's digital revenue will increase to $9.6 billion by 2036, from $3.2 billion this year. The bank called GM's digital capabilities "an underappreciated and undervalued opportunity." Ed Nightingale, GM's vice president of digital products, said GM aims to offer car owners appealing features, because it can't start "charging for something as part of the core experience that you've always had." GM said it will introduce an AI assistant on the Cadillac Lyriq SUV in the coming months. Reporting by Kalea Hall in New York; Editing by Mike Colias and Rod Nickel

GM is shutting one of its battery and motor plants in the U.S.

GM is shutting one of its battery and motor plants in the U.S. Add CarScoops on Google: General Motors is closing one of its battery and electric motor plants in Michigan, as it once again tweaks its EV plans during a period of change and a highly competitive EV market. The plant's closure comes on the back of GM making significant changes to its EV ambitions over the past year. The Brownstown Battery Assembly site has manufactured batteries for the Cadillac Celestiq as well as the small battery and electric motor used by the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. The large, 480,000-square-foot plant opened in 2009, and GM and Honda also used part of it to develop hydrogen fuel cells. With the Corvette E-Ray now replaced by the Corvette Grand Sport X, the Celestiq only being a small seller, and the hydrogen partnership axed, GM no longer needs the plant and will decommission it when the current lease ends next summer. Auto News reports the site now employs fewer than a dozen staff, down from roughly 300 workers. GM is offering jobs to workers at its other nearby facilities as required through its agreement with the UAW union. Any ongoing work at the plant will transition to other GM plants. The Brownstown plant opened in 2009, and, before the Celestiq and E-Ray, it supplied components for the Chevy Volt. GM's EV plans are looking very different. The site of a second facility in Detroit remains uncertain. GM partnered with Piston Automotive in 2024 to build a 300,000-square-foot hydrogen fuel cell plant, but the partnership has been canceled, and GM has taken over the site lease from Piston. It's not yet clear what it may use this site for moving forward. Although GM boss Mary Barra continues to refer to EVs as the brand's 'North Star' and ultimate goal, it has taken some hard hits to the chin to recoup money from its overinvestment in electric cars. In 2024, GM joined forces with Samsung SDI on a $3.5 billion battery plant in Indiana, adding to three other joint-venture battery plants it runs with LG Energy Solution. Just two months ago, GM sold its 49.99% stake in its Indiana plant to Samsung for an undisclosed sum. Now fully owned by Samsung, the factory will initially produce batteries for energy storage systems. It's possible that it could also be the home of prismatic battery cells for future GM products, though it doesn't appear that a deal has been locked in. Since this partnership fell apart, GM has announced its all-new, fourth-generation EV architecture and revealed an ambitious plan to introduce more affordable lithium manganese-rich batteries that it's used AI to develop in-house.

GM is giving OnStar AI smarts and a new way to monitor your parked car.

GM is giving OnStar AI smarts and a new way to monitor your parked car. GM's 2027 OnStar overhaul will introduce an AI assistant for natural-language vehicle controls and a new camera feature that records certain incidents around parked cars. By Pranob Mehrotra Published October 22, 2026 9:13 AM Update (October 22 23:54 PT): In response to our query, GM clarified that offline recording support is already available on eligible vehicles. Like Tesla's Sentry Mode, it requires owners to connect a USB drive to save incident recordings, which can be viewed on the vehicle's infotainment screen. The upcoming Connected Cameras feature will build on this by giving owners remote access to these recordings via the revamped OnStar app, allowing them to check footage without walking out to their car. General Motors has announced plans to add a new Connected Cameras feature to its OnStar service starting next year, giving drivers a way to monitor parked vehicles remotely and capture footage of certain incidents. GM is bringing Tesla Sentry Mode-style monitoring to its cars. GM says the Connected Cameras feature will arrive alongside the redesigned OnStar app in 2027, which will replace the current OnStar Guardian app along with the separate Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC apps. The feature will utilize onboard cameras to record a short clip when a trigger event happens, such as aggressive honking or a sharp impact. The footage will then be uploaded to the OnStar app and the owner will be notified. This functionality directly rivals Tesla's Sentry Mode, which relies on exterior cameras to record surrounding activity around a parked vehicle. However, it's not immediately clear whether GM's implementation will support offline recordings on a USB drive, something that Tesla already offers. We've reached out to the company for clarification and will update this post as soon as we hear back. Recommended Videos If you're worried about privacy, GM promises all recordings will be encrypted and completely inaccessible to the automaker, with users having full control over their camera feeds. Part of a broader OnStar AI overhaul. Connected Cameras is just one component of the massive AI upgrade heading to GM vehicles next year. The automaker is also introducing an OnStar AI Assistant, which will debut on the 2027 Cadillac LYRIQ through an over-the-air update before expanding to other GM models. It will allow drivers to use natural language prompts for things like adjusting cabin temperature, checking remaining range, mapping charging stops, or explaining warning symbols on the dashboard. Beyond basic in-car controls, GM says the assistant will be able to complete complex vehicle-specific tasks and smoothly hand off queries to a live OnStar advisor whenever human support is needed.
