Caterpillar stock falls 26% as $72B order book nears annual revenue amid data centre and construction demand questions

Caterpillar's shares have fallen 26% from their 52-week high, but the company holds a $72 billion order book, nearly matching its $74.7 billion in trailing twelve-month revenue. The backlog grew 92% year-over-year, with 59% expected for delivery within twelve months. Power & Energy drives growth, with second-quarter sales to power generation users up 72% on data centre demand. Lead times for gas engines extend into late 2028 and 2029. The company converted a Kansas plant in under twelve months to meet demand. Construction Industries saw sales to users grow 22% in the second quarter, the sixth consecutive quarter of growth. Management expects full-year 2026 growth despite anticipated dealer inventory reductions in the fourth quarter. The company is already taking orders into 2029 and 2030.

Luck Stone expands Caterpillar autonomous hauling to two new quarries after Bull Run success

Luck Stone is expanding its use of Caterpillar's autonomous hauling technology to two additional quarry sites in Virginia. The aggregates producer will deploy the system across fleets of Cat 775 trucks at its Boscobel and Bealeton locations, marking the first deployment of Caterpillar's autonomous solution on this truck model. The expansion follows a successful collaboration at Luck Stone's Bull Run site, where autonomous technology improved safety and production consistency whilst creating new skill development opportunities for workers. Caterpillar's autonomous trucks have collectively hauled over 13 billion tonnes and travelled more than 455 million kilometres with no reported injuries. The implementation is supported by local Cat dealer Carter Machinery and integrates with complementary technologies for loaders and other site equipment. Luck Stone, the largest family-owned aggregates producer in the US, views autonomy as a way to address industry challenges including safety, consistent production and talent development.

Caterpillar adds capacity betting on data centre demand through 2030

Caterpillar stock rose 94% over the past twelve months, driven partly by surging data center demand. Power generation sales to users grew 72% in the second quarter of 2026, with the Power & Energy segment booking $8.2 billion in sales. The company is racing to expand capacity, lifting new turbine production to 2.5 times 2024 levels. Lead times on gas prime power now extend to late 2028, with some orders placed as far out as 2030. However, analysts question whether data center demand will sustain through the decade. At $805 per share, Caterpillar's valuation assumes 17.4% annual revenue growth. Management expects new capacity to reach cash payback by decade's end, but aftermarket revenue from installed units won't materialise until after 2030. If data center orders cool before capacity investments pay off, growth could fall short of market expectations.
