Requirements
  • A Master’s Degree is required.
  • National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive care on the inpatient neurosurgery service in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Perform complete histories and physicals and document findings in the medical record.
  • Order and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques and supporting diagnostic information and procedures.
  • Serve as a first responder for patient status changes, orders, procedural interventions, and resuscitative interventions when needed.
  • Assess risks associated with acute and complex chronically ill patients, including medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team to diagnose acute and complex chronic conditions.
  • Manage diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision.
  • Formulate prioritized differential diagnoses and diagnose complications.
  • Order appropriate interventions and formulate, document, implement, and modify individualized plans of care.
  • Use evidence-based practice guidelines and protocols to address complex acute and chronic health care needs.
  • Prescribe diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions.
  • Perform advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation.
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Document patient progress, transfers, discharges, plans of care, procedures, acute events, and other required clinical summaries in the medical record.
  • Maintain timely documentation that meets acute care compliance standards and captures patient acuity.
  • Precept and mentor others and provide education and instruction to graduate students.
  • Engage in research and analysis of evidence-based practice.
  • Participate in Advanced Practice Grand Rounds and specialty-specific meetings.
  • Maintain continuing education units and membership in a professional organization.
