Qualcomm has renewed its global patent licensing agreement with Apple, effective from 1 April 2027. Despite Apple developing its own modems and reducing chip purchases from Qualcomm, the iPhone maker will continue paying royalties to use Qualcomm's wireless technology patents. Qualcomm's licensing unit generated $1.28 billion last quarter at a 69% margin. The company's automotive revenue reached $1.59 billion, up 61%, marking its 23rd consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. Management expects non-handset growth to accelerate from 24% in fiscal 2026 to over 60% in fiscal 2027. Qualcomm shares trade at 15.34 times free cash flow, compared to Broadcom's approximate 43 times multiple. The company generated $12.82 billion in free cash flow in fiscal 2025 and returned $12.60 billion to shareholders. However, handset revenue fell 20% to $5.09 billion, with Android revenue expected to decline 20% this year.
Apple CEO John Ternus is exploring a faster, more flexible product strategy, potentially moving away from the company's traditional spring and autumn release schedule, Bloomberg reported. The chief executive, who succeeded Tim Cook earlier this month, is also considering reducing management layers to enable direct interaction between engineers and senior leaders. Changes are already underway in Apple's hardware organisation, with several engineering program manager positions recently eliminated. Around six directors have been affected, and they may seek internal transfers before leaving. Apple has also reduced staffing for Vision Pro, Siri, and Fitness+ roles. A proposal to cut approximately 5,000 AppleCare customer-service jobs was paused during the summer, according to the report. The moves suggest Ternus is reassessing product timing, engineering coordination, and organisational structure early in his leadership.
Apple CEO John Ternus is restructuring the company weeks into his tenure, according to Bloomberg News. The former hardware engineering chief plans to accelerate product development, expand device offerings, and streamline operations with enhanced engineering focus. Ternus is considering moving away from Apple's traditional spring and autumn product release schedules. He aims to eliminate middle-management positions to reduce layers between engineers and senior executives. Cost-cutting measures are already underway. The new CEO is exploring additional revenue streams and methods to increase profitability from existing products. These changes mark the first significant shift following Tim Cook's 15-year tenure as chief executive. Apple shares declined intraday. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Bank of America has identified a new competitive threat to Apple from Meta Platforms' AI agent, Muse. The analyst warns that AI agents like Muse could intercept iPhone users' intent before Apple's own software, potentially undermining discovery, referral, and transaction economics within Apple's ecosystem. Muse has reached the top of Apple's App Store with at least 2.5 million downloads in its first weeks. It can shop online, fill out forms, and contact vendors, with partnerships including Shopify, Expedia, and PayPal. Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan notes Apple's Siri AI lacks comparable agentic capabilities, and its annual software-release cycle may disadvantage it against continuously improving AI agents. Despite this risk, Mohan maintains a Buy rating with a $370 price target, calling Apple an eventual winner in edge AI.
Apple stock dropped 2.66% on 29 September to $329.40, falling 4.6% below its 22 September record high of $345.34. The decline was company-specific, making it the weakest performer in the electronic technology sector whilst chipmakers like Broadcom and Micron closed higher. According to a Bloomberg report, CEO John Ternus plans to cut middle management and engineering programme manager roles. He may also eliminate Apple's fixed spring and autumn launch calendar. Bank of America flagged Meta's Muse AI agent as a threat to Apple's shopping and referral activity, though the firm maintains a Buy rating. Apple trades at 37.8 times trailing earnings, above its five-year median of 31. Apple reported record June-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16% year-over-year, with iPhone sales rising 22%.
