About the Job

Requirements

  • 12+ years in software engineering and/or security, with deep, sustained hands-on ownership of application or product security for production SaaS at enterprise scale.
  • Track record as a Principal-level or equivalent individual contributor whose technical vision and standards shaped an entire engineering organization.
  • Deep experience securing multi-tenant, cloud-native SaaS platforms, ideally on AWS, including tenant isolation, authentication and authorization, and API security at scale.
  • Demonstrated impact eliminating vulnerability classes and setting security frameworks, reference architectures, or paved roads adopted organization-wide.
  • Current, authoritative knowledge of application security grounded in OWASP frameworks, including Web Top 10, API Security Top 10, ASVS, LLM Top 10, and OWASP Agentic AI Top 10; secure design patterns; OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, session management, and cryptography.
  • Mastery of threat modeling, such as STRIDE, secure code review, and manual and AI-assisted penetration testing across web, API, and cloud surfaces.
  • Deep experience embedding security into CI/CD at scale, including SAST, DAST, SCA, secret scanning, IaC scanning, artifact-repository management, and container/Kubernetes security aligned to the OWASP Kubernetes Top Ten.
  • Strong coding ability in one or more of Ruby, Java, Go, Python, or JavaScript/TypeScript, sufficient to build reference implementations and security tooling and participate credibly in code review.
  • Deep cloud-security expertise, preferably AWS, including IAM and role right-sizing, network and egress controls, KMS and secrets management, BYOK and field-level encryption, and infrastructure as code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Authoritative understanding of cryptographic and compliance standards relevant to enterprise SaaS, including FIPS 140-2/140-3, PCI, SOC 2, ISO 27001, and Google CASA or TX-RAMP control frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of securing AI/LLM and agentic systems, including prompt injection, insecure tool use, model and data exposure, and non-human identity.
  • Ability to set technical direction for and influence an entire engineering organization and senior executives through technical credibility and clear communication.
  • Track record of growing Staff and Senior Staff engineers and building a durable security-champion culture across distributed teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own the multi-year technical vision and architecture strategy for product and application security across all products and the shared platform, and align engineering and the CISO organization around it.
  • Define secure-by-design reference architectures, paradigms, and organization-wide standards for authentication and authorization, tenant isolation, data protection, secrets, and API security.
  • Set the strategic security agenda for the AI-first platform, including the AI Agent Platform, Knowledge/Context Graph, and agentic workflows, anticipating threat classes before production.
  • Act as the final technical decision-maker and tie-breaker on the highest-risk security-architecture trade-offs.
  • Lead threat modeling and security design reviews for critical, cross-cutting, high-risk systems, including identity and access, the integrations/connector framework, and agent runtime.
  • Set standards for secure code review, manual and AI-assisted penetration testing, and vulnerability analysis; drive root-cause remediation strategies that eliminate vulnerability classes across the estate.
  • Architect and harden multi-tenant security controls, including tenant isolation, authentication and authorization models, secrets management, data protection, and API gateway security.
  • Own security design for AI and agentic features, including prompt-injection defense, tool-invocation authorization, non-human identity, and permission-scoped context access.
  • Define the organization-wide, AI-assisted left-shift strategy, embedding SAST, DAST, SCA/dependency scanning, secret detection, and IaC scanning across CI/CD pipelines.
  • Set direction for security tooling, automation, paved-road frameworks and libraries, code-component asset inventory, and secure-by-default product hardening.
  • Own software supply-chain security strategy, including centralized software artifact repository management, code-artifact repository guardrails, and CI/CD pipeline hardening.
  • Establish secure-coding standards, golden patterns, guardrails, operationalized threat modeling and maturity models, and organization-wide security quality gates.
  • Serve as the top technical escalation point for severe security incidents, leading investigation, containment strategy, and post-incident architectural hardening.
  • Set risk-based prioritization for findings from internal testing, bug bounty, third-party penetration tests, and researcher disclosures, and drive systemic fixes.
  • Shape the bug bounty and responsible-disclosure program strategy.
  • Mentor and multiply Staff and Senior Staff engineers and security champions, raising the security bar across the engineering organization.
  • Advise VP Engineering, the CISO organization, and product leadership; represent product-security posture to enterprise customers, auditors, and the external security community where appropriate.
  • Drive cross-organizational security initiatives to completion by building consensus across teams without formal authority.
  • Provide technical direction and hands-on contribution across compliance and trust enablement, including internal and external penetration testing, PCI vault and VAPT, Google CASA, TX-RAMP control validation, SDLC documentation-control reviews, audit evidence, risk prioritization, and new-product-introduction security assessments.
  • Provide technical direction and hands-on contribution to continuous security assessment and automation, including DAST onboarding for public APIs, continuous-deployment integration, SCA bug triage, CI/CD environment assessment, continuous-control monitoring, security scorecards, and anomaly-detection rule configuration.
  • Provide technical direction and hands-on contribution to shift-left security, including code-component asset inventory, supply-chain attack prevention, threat-modeling operationalization, and product-security maturity models.
  • Provide technical direction and hands-on contribution to product security features, including step-up authentication, SCIM/secure SAML, OIDC federated SSO, OAuth for APIs and third-party apps, secrets injection, customer-data masking, field-level encryption, BYOK, DNSSEC, CSP/X-Frame header hardening, IMDSv2, egress-proxy enforcement, hardcoded-secret cleanup, IAM role right-sizing, SIEM audit-log integration, and SSPM tool integration.
  • Define security KPIs, including reduction in high/critical findings reaching production, coverage of critical services by threat models, mean time to remediate, and adoption of secure-by-default frameworks.
  • Deliver a measurable, sustained reduction in exploitable risk across the product portfolio while improving engineering velocity.

Desired Qualifications

  • Deep experience securing ITSM, CX/CRM, or service-management products and their data models.
  • External contributions such as open-source security projects, published research, CVEs, standards-body participation, or conference talks including Black Hat, DEF CON, or OWASP.
  • Industry certifications such as OSCP, OSWE, GWAPT, CISSP, or equivalent; valued but not required.
  • Experience defining or scaling bug bounty or responsible-disclosure programs.
  • Deep familiarity with modern AI/ML stacks, including LLMs, embeddings, RAG pipelines, agent frameworks such as LangGraph, MCP, and A2A, and their security models.
  • Experience shaping compliance and audit programs, including SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, or GDPR.

About the Company

Freshworks

Cloud-based CRM and customer engagement suite

Freshworks provides a cloud-based suite of customer engagement and employee management software for businesses of various sizes, including modules for customer support, sales, marketing, IT service management, and HR. It works as a single SaaS platform where each module (Freshdesk, Freshsales, Freshmarketer, Freshservice, Freshteam) handles a different task and shares data across departments, with customers choosing tiered subscription plans and optionally extending functionality through a marketplace of apps. The platform combines multiple CRM and business functions on one interconnected system, rather than offering standalone tools. Its goal is to streamline customer interactions and internal processes to improve collaboration and efficiency across departments.
