GM recalls 952 Silverado EV and Sierra EV trucks over steel wheels that can crack and separate. General Motors filed two separate safety recalls with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on July 30, 2026. One covers potentially cracked steel wheels on the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV and 2026 GMC Sierra EV; the other covers a high-voltage battery defect with a fire risk affecting the Silverado EV, Sierra EV, and the Cadillac Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL. What the wheel recall covers. The larger of the two recalls covers 952 trucks: 513 Chevrolet Silverado EV and 439 GMC Sierra EV units from the 2026 model year. This recall affects only vehicles with steel road wheels and/or steel spare wheels, under NHTSA campaign 26V496. According to the recall report, "One or more of the steel wheels and/or the spare tire wheel on these vehicles may have a manufacturing defect that can eventually result in cracking at the disc vent holes." The defect develops over time and may not be immediately visible, allowing damage to worsen before the wheel is put into service. A cracked wheel may lead to disc separation and a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash. For Silverado EV trucks, service technicians will inspect all four wheels and the spare, if equipped. On the Sierra EV, only the spare steel wheel will be inspected. Because the Sierra EV inspection covers only the spare, the safety concern on that model arises if a defective spare is installed following a flat tire or other roadside event. As per NHTSA documentation, suspect Silverado EV and Sierra EV pickups were produced between October 24, 2025, and March 13, 2026, for model year 2026 exclusively. The recall involves all-electric trucks equipped with either RT3 steel wheels or SG8 spare steel wheels. Containment measures and validation improvements were implemented in April 2026, helping ensure that later vehicles would not be affected by the defect. A second recall targets the battery. GM is also recalling certain 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ, Escalade IQL, GMC Sierra EV, and Chevrolet Silverado EV vehicles under a separate campaign (NHTSA 26V494). The high-voltage battery may have an improperly secured internal module component; a loose component may move and damage the high-voltage battery, increasing the risk of a fire. Neither recall carries a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory, and the battery recall covers just ten vehicles in the United States. GM has reported zero incidents across both campaigns. For the battery defect, dealers will replace the high-voltage battery. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by September 14, 2026. What owners should do now. Dealers will inspect and replace the steel wheels as necessary, free of charge, with notification letters also expected to be mailed by September 14, 2026. Vehicle identification numbers involved in the wheel recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 30, 2026. Owners of Silverado EV and Sierra EV pickups optioned with at least one steel wheel can check whether their vehicles are included by entering the 17-character VIN into the NHTSA recall database. Owners can also contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223. GM recall numbers are N262556920 for the wheels and N262562600 for the battery. The wheel recall is a phased campaign, and unsold trucks that fail the dealer inspection are held until replacement wheels arrive. Buyers waiting on a steel-wheel Silverado EV delivery may experience a short delay. GM sold 11,275 Silverado EVs and 7,996 Sierra EVs in the United States in 2025. The dual recall underscores continued NHTSA scrutiny of electric pickup platforms. GM's broader EV strategy includes plans confirmed earlier this year to ship all 12 of its 2027 EVs with native NACS charging ports. Safety regulators have also been widening their focus beyond hardware: a federal safety benchmark recently expanded its driver-assist test suite to eight pass-fail criteria, adding software-level scrutiny on top of the mechanical compliance obligations that recall campaigns like these still enforce. US safety regulators escalate probe into 6.2L V8 GM trucks after reports of post-recall engine failures. The investigation is taking a wider look into problems with the L87 beyond GM's existing mid-2025 recall August 24, 2026 The NHTSA's investigation into failing GM 6.2L V8 engines has been upgraded to an "engineering analysis" - a step toward compelling a full-scale recall. For years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been looking into widespread reports of engine failures, specifically with General Motors' L87 6.2-liter V8 available on full-size SUVs and trucks. The last action GM took on the matter was in April 2025, when the automaker recalled nearly 600,000 vehicles to address those engine failures. Now, though, the NHTSA is opening an Engineering Analysis (EA) - a higher-level probe than the initial recall query - into whether efforts to address the problem were actually effective. Specifically, the investigation focuses on 2021-2026 models equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine: the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, as well as the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. The agency's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said it received 499 customer complaints alleging a post-remedy engine failure. The 2025 recall (NHTSA recall 25V-274) aimed to try and fix the problem of engine failures by using a thicker viscosity oil or, in some cases, replacing engines entirely. GM, for its part, reported nearly 7,000 similar complaints of failures after that recall went into effect. Prior to this most recent probe, General Motors opened three investigations between 2022 and 2024. Ultimately, it only issued a targeted recall for 2021-2024 models after the NHTSA opened the recall query, which has now been upgraded to that engineering analysis mentioned earlier. While the closing resume upgrading the ODI's investigation from a query to an engineering analysis only cites one crash and injury, GM identified 12 crashes and 12 minor injuries when it called the voluntary recall in 2025. 42 fire allegations were also alleged to be linked to the problem at the time. In addition to greater scrutiny from the NHTSA, General Motors also faces ongoing litigation over widespread allegations of sudden engine failures. On Friday, the automaker said it continues to cooperate in the investigation, though whether this latest revelation from the ODI report could impact the outcome of the class-action complaint is unclear. As the situation stands right now, an Engineering Analysis by the NHTSA does not automatically trigger a further manufacturer recall. The outcome of this technical investigation phase could, however, lead the agency to formally request another recall if it concludes a safety defect exists. Given the scale of complaints that even GM itself acknowledges, it seems a formal recall demand is the likely outcome, though EAs can close without action, or GM could decide of its own volition to begin another voluntary recall.
2028 Chevy Malibu specs, price, exterior & release date. General Motors officially concluded production of the Chevrolet Malibu in late 2024, closing the book on a six-decade lineage and making the 2025 model year its final commercial outing. As a result, there is no official production plan for an internal combustion 2028 Chevy Malibu. However, the nameplate remains a frequent subject of industry speculation regarding potential electrification and future design revivals. Why the Malibu was discontinued? General Motors ended production at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City to retool the facility for electric vehicles, specifically the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV. The Malibu was the final traditional four-door sedan offered in Chevrolet's North American lineup, as consumer demand and development budgets shifted predominantly toward compact crossovers, midsize SUVs, and pickup trucks. The speculative 2028 revival: EV or PHEV sedans. While no official ICE replacement is slated, automotive designers and analysts frequently explore how a revived 2028 Malibu could fit into GM's future lineup: Advertisements Discover more automotive * Ultium EV Architecture: A revived nameplate would likely leverage GM's Ultium electric vehicle platform, offering single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. * Aerodynamic Fastback Styling: Shifting away from traditional fleet-sedan profiles toward a streamlined liftback or fastback design would maximize electric range and highway efficiency. * Next-Gen Cabin Tech: Integration of ultrawide infotainment screens, GM Super Cruise hands-free driving capabilities, and updated software platforms. * Target Competition: If revived as a sporty, tech-focused EV sedan, it would compete directly with mainstream electric sedans such as the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. Unless GM makes a strategic pivot to reintroduce an electric passenger car under the Malibu badge, the vehicle remains retired, marking the end of Chevrolet's long-standing traditional sedan heritage in North America. While GM ended internal combustion Malibu production at Fairfax Assembly in late 2024 to manufacture the next-gen Chevrolet Bolt EV, industry reports and product roadmaps indicate GM has not entirely abandoned the four-door segment: * Shared Architecture: Recent long-term product planning reports suggest GM is exploring a new sporty sedan platform targeted around the 2028 model year. This platform would likely share componentry across GM brands, potentially underpinning a Buick entry and the next-generation Cadillac CT5. * Concept Inspiration (FNR-XE): Chevrolet previously showcased the FNR-XE Concept, a low-slung, aerodynamic midsize electric sedan designed to gauge consumer demand for a traditional four-door replacement. Speculative engineering & Target specs. If GM revives the Malibu badge or introduces a direct spiritual successor for 2028, it would diverge significantly from the front-wheel-drive 1.5L turbo formula of the previous generation: Advertisements Discover more Locating Nearby Vehicle Dealerships automotive business Market positioning and challenges. * Segment Void: The discontinuation of the Malibu left the North American midsize sedan space almost entirely to the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata. A new Chevy entry would target buyers seeking an aerodynamic, lower-cost alternative to bulky crossovers. * Badge Viability: GM faces a strategic choice between reviving the historic Malibu nameplate - which carries high fleet and rental recognition - or launching a clean-slate EV badge (similar to Blazer EV and Equinox EV) to appeal to younger, tech-focused buyers. GM's new in-vehicle AI to transform driving in 2026. Discover more Pre-Ordering Upcoming Video Game Titles Video Games Posted by By Helpful Info August 23, 2026 Table of Contents Introduction. General Motors is gearing up to launch a new in-vehicle AI assistant in 2026, and it promises to be a game-changer for drivers. Unlike the current Gemini AI powered by Google, GM's upcoming assistant will be smarter, more personalized, and deeply connected to the vehicle itself. The goal is simple but exciting: make driving easier, safer, and tailored specifically to each GM customer's habits and needs. This breakthrough comes straight from the latest reports from CNBC, highlighting a bright future for in-car technology. What makes GM's new AI assistant special. What sets GM's new AI apart is its native integration into the car's system. Instead of a voice assistant that just listens and responds, this AI will actively understand the car's health, driving conditions, and most importantly, the driver's preferences. Imagine an assistant that doesn't just play your favorite song, but adjusts your seat, climate control, and even driving style based on your mood or the road situation. By being tightly linked to the vehicle, this AI will offer smarter, more context-aware help. For example, if the AI senses traffic ahead or road hazards, it could adjust your route, suggest breaks, or recommend safety tips on the fly. This deeper connection is the big leap from today's assistants, which often work like apps floating on top of car systems rather than working with the entire vehicle. How GM is Building the AI Assistant. Behind the scenes, GM is working with a secret partner specializing in large language models - similar to the technology behind the most advanced chatbots today. This partnership aims to create a powerful AI brain that can understand natural language and complex commands in a way most current assistants can't. What makes GM's approach unique is how the AI will use the car's own data - everything from sensor info to maintenance records and telematics. This data-rich environment lets the AI make predictions and customize experiences beyond voice commands. For example, there could be personalized "kids settings" that adjust entertainment and safety features automatically when children are detected in the car. The AI might also predict when the vehicle needs maintenance and remind drivers proactively, helping avoid breakdowns. It can even tailor your music playlists or seat positions based on who's driving, all without you lifting a finger. Comparing the New AI to Today's Gemini AI. Currently, GM uses Gemini AI, a voice assistant powered by Google. Gemini is fairly good at handling basic tasks - like answering simple questions, playing games, or controlling a few car features - but it has limitations. Gemini isn't fully integrated into the vehicle's systems, so it can't really see what's happening inside the car or predict your needs. The upcoming AI assistant will move far beyond these limits. Instead of just reacting to voice commands, it will proactively assist by using all the vehicle information it has. For example, unlike Gemini, which might pause music when you ask, the new assistant will adjust settings based on how you're feeling or the road conditions, creating a safer, more comfortable driving experience. This leap in intelligence promises a car that listens and understands, rather than just responds. GM's new in-vehicle AI assistant represents a major step forward in making cars smarter and easier to operate. By building its own AI technology and deeply connecting it to the vehicle, GM is focused on transforming the driver experience - making each ride safer, more comfortable, and truly personalized. Set to arrive in GM vehicles later in 2026, this new assistant marks an exciting future where your car isn't just a machine, but a helpful companion on the road. For anyone interested in the future of automotive tech, this development is definitely one to watch closely.
Car giant's massive engine blunder - a million SUVs and pickups under scrutiny. The models include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Yukon, among others. The investigation was opened on August 20 in the United States. Today at 18:30 American automaker General Motors is facing a scrutiny befitting its name. Federal safety authorities have opened an investigation covering no fewer than one million GM SUVs and pickup trucks, the cause being an engine defect in the vehicles. The investigation concerns exactly 997,743 vehicles manufactured by GM in the United States. The investigation was opened on August 20. Thousands of complaints. The models include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Yukon, among others. The vehicles in question, model years 2021-2026, are equipped with GM's 6.2-liter L87 engines, news agency Reuters reports. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has logged 499 complaints regarding this engine type. What is peculiar is that the complaints concern recurring faults in engines that have already been repaired once. General Motors has also received a heap of mail on the matter. As many as 7,000 complaints about engine problems that emerged after the recall repair have landed in the company's mailbox. Subcontractor in the dock. GM already carried out a recall last year concerning the same engine failures. According to the car giant, the fault was caused by a faulty part supplied by a subcontractor to the L87 engine. GM said it is investigating the causes of the engine failures, as well as the situation of vehicles that have suffered engine failures after the recall. Federal authorities previously said they were expanding the investigation from the original 2021-2024 model years. Vehicles manufactured after 2024 have also been taken under scrutiny.
