Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old; applicants who are 18 or older are preferred.
  • One to two years of experience working with children, such as in camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying, is required.
  • Applicants must be able to plan and implement group activities.
  • Applicants must complete the minimum STARS-required training and CPR/First Aid training at hire or as soon as possible, no later than 30 days after employment.
  • Applicants must have a cleared Portable Background Check in the statewide MERIT registry at hire or during onboarding.
  • Applicants must complete pre-employment tuberculosis testing and have the required measles, mumps, and rubella immunization.
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be currently enrolled in high school or an equivalent education program.
  • Employees must adhere to abuse-prevention policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, and comply with mandated-reporting requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Guide elementary-age participants through sports, arts, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and other hands-on learning activities in the Before and After-School Enrichment program.
  • Implement culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate curriculum activities in accordance with YMCA youth-development goals.
  • Supervise a group of children to ensure their health and safety and provide a positive experience.
  • Provide guidance to staff or volunteers overseeing activities for groups of children when needed.
  • Communicate day-to-day, confidential, and evaluative information professionally with parents and guardians.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures related to medical and disciplinary situations, child-abuse prevention, and emergency procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining a developmentally appropriate site, including its appearance, décor, and cleanliness.
  • Prepare and serve snacks when needed and clean the snack area.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Ensure staff are properly screened, trained, supervised, and held accountable to the organization’s abuse-risk-management standards.
  • Occasionally lift office products and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds and perform the required standing, walking, reaching, handling, and visual tasks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation, is preferred.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English is helpful.
  • Applicants who are 18 or older are preferred.
