Lowe's and Home Depot custom Blinds - The big-box reality. Levolor, Bali, Home Decorators Collection, Custom Home Collection - here's who actually makes the custom blinds sold at Lowe's and Home Depot, and what to know before buying. The custom blinds programs at Lowe's and Home Depot serve a real purpose in the window covering market. They're the entry point for millions of homeowners who want something better than off-the-shelf vinyl mini-blinds but aren't ready for the price tag of premium custom shades. The pricing is transparent (mostly), the brands are familiar, and the install is optional. But the big-box custom blinds experience is genuinely different from what you get from a specialty dealer or a national in-home consultation chain. The brands sold there, the manufacturing structure behind those brands, and the service experience are all distinct. Knowing the difference helps you decide whether big-box is the right channel for your project. Who makes the blinds at Lowe's and Home Depot. Hunter douglas-owned brands. Levolor. Acquired by Hunter Douglas in July 2016 from Newell Brands for a reported $260 million. Sold extensively at both Lowe's and Home Depot. Levolor has been a brand name since the early 20th century - the company actually pioneered the modern Venetian blind in the 1930s under founder Karl Lorentzen - but the modern Levolor product line is built and marketed within the Hunter Douglas portfolio. At Lowe's, you'll see Levolor sold under various sub-brands including "Custom Size Now by Levolor" (a cut-to-size program at the store) and "Custom Levolor" (a fully custom order program). Both are HD-owned product lines. Springs Window fashions-owned brands. Bali. Bali is Springs Window Fashions' flagship brand at the mid-price tier. Available at both Lowe's and Home Depot. Bali products include faux wood blinds, real wood blinds, vertical blinds, cellular shades, roller shades, and Roman shades. Graber. Springs' premium brand, less common at the big-box level than Bali but available in some markets through Lowe's and through Budget Blinds. Graber competes more directly with Hunter Douglas than with the entry-level big-box options. Private-Label brands. Home Decorators Collection (Home Depot). Home Depot's house brand for window coverings, furniture, and home goods. The blinds and shades sold under this label are manufactured by various third-party OEMs under contract to Home Depot specifications. The actual manufacturer can vary by product category and may change over time as Home Depot's sourcing contracts evolve. Custom Home Collection (Lowe's). Lowe's house brand for custom blinds. Same general structure as Home Decorators - third-party manufactured under contract. The specific manufacturer is generally not disclosed at the retail level. Allen + Roth (Lowe's). Lowe's broader house brand for home goods, which extends into window treatments in some product categories. Veneta. A brand visible at Home Depot in some markets, generally positioned as an alternative to Levolor. Want expert advice on YOUR windows? Book an in-home design visit with its window treatment specialists and see real samples in your space. What the big-box experience is actually like. The custom blinds experience at Lowe's or Home Depot has some real strengths and some real limitations. Strengths: * Transparent pricing. What you see on the shelf or in the online configurator is roughly what you pay. There's no in-home consultation discount theater. * Familiar brand names. Levolor and Bali have decades of consumer recognition. The products are reliable for their price points. * Flexible purchase paths. You can buy in-store, online, or with a measure-and-install service for an additional charge. * Easy returns and exchanges. Big-box return policies generally apply, which can be more permissive than specialty dealer return policies. * Lower entry-level pricing. A basic Levolor cellular shade or Bali faux wood blind through Lowe's or Home Depot costs noticeably less than the equivalent product through a specialty dealer or in-home consultation company. Limitations: * Limited customization. Big-box programs typically have fewer fabric choices, fewer hardware finishes, and tighter size constraints than specialty dealer programs. Custom Size Now and similar programs have specific size increments rather than true bespoke sizing. * No professional in-home measure included. Unless you pay for the measure service, you're responsible for measuring your own windows. Measurement errors are not covered by the warranty. * Variable installation quality. Big-box installation is contracted out to local installers whose quality varies by market and by individual. * Limited service after the sale. If something goes wrong six months later, you're typically dealing with a call center rather than a local relationship. The manufacturer warranty applies, but coordinating service can take time. * Generally lower-end product lines. The Levolor and Bali products sold at big-box stores tend to be the manufacturers' lower-tier lines. Levolor at Lowe's isn't the same Levolor product line that an authorized dealer might carry as a higher-end specification. How big-box pricing compares. For a representative example, take a basic cordless cellular shade for a 36" x 48" window: * At Lowe's (Custom Size Now by Levolor): Roughly $90 to $140 depending on options * At Home Depot (Home Decorators Collection): Roughly $80 to $130 * From a specialty dealer (Norman or Hunter Douglas branded): Roughly $250 to $400 * From a national chain like 3 Day Blinds or Budget Blinds: Roughly $350 to $500 The big-box product is genuinely less expensive. It's also genuinely a lower-tier product - thinner fabrics, simpler lift mechanisms, fewer warranty terms. For a rental property, a guest bedroom, or a budget-conscious project, this can be entirely the right choice. For a primary residence with windows you'll live with for ten or fifteen years, the math gets more complicated. A specialty dealer's Norman shade at $300 might outlast and outperform two replacements of a big-box product at $100 each - and you'll have a local relationship for service in between. When big-box custom blinds are the right choice. Lowe's or Home Depot custom blinds are a reasonable choice when: * You're outfitting a rental property and want functional, replaceable window coverings * You're filling secondary spaces (basements, garages, guest rooms) where premium quality isn't a priority * Your budget is tight and you want familiar brand-name products at the lowest available price * You're handy and willing to measure and install yourself * You're looking for a temporary solution while saving for premium treatments Big-box custom blinds are less of a good choice when: * You want the most current fabric collections and design options * You need precise custom sizing or specialty shapes * You want professional in-home measuring and installation included * The windows are highly visible and aesthetics are a priority * You want a long-term local relationship for service and updates over the years * You're outfitting your forever home A quick word on the "custom" Label. "Custom" in big-box marketing usually means "made to your specified dimensions from a fixed catalog of materials and options." This is a useful service, but it's a more constrained version of custom than what specialty dealers offer. A specialty dealer's "custom" typically means: * Hundreds of fabric choices instead of dozens * Multiple hardware finishes and bracket styles * Specialty shapes (arches, angles, sliding doors with cutouts) * True bespoke sizing in 1/8" increments rather than fixed size brackets * Custom valances, fascia, and decorative options * Tailored motorization including smart home integration If you want the full range of those options, big-box isn't where you'll find them. If you want basic custom sizing in a familiar brand at the lowest price point, big-box is fine. The honest take. Lowe's and Home Depot custom blinds programs are not a scam or a bad deal. They're a clear, transparent value proposition: get a real custom-sized blind from a recognized brand at a lower price than specialty channels, in exchange for fewer customization options and a less hands-on service experience. What's worth understanding is that the brands sold there - Levolor, Bali, Home Decorators Collection - are corporate-managed product lines from a small number of large manufacturers, often the same manufacturers whose premium lines are sold elsewhere at higher price points. You're buying real products, but you're buying the entry-level versions of those products. For the right project, that's the right purchase. For a higher-end project, the value math usually points elsewhere - either to an independent specialty dealer or to one of the premium brands 626 Shutters & Shades has covered earlier in this series. In the next post, 626 Shutters & Shades'll dig into the technical question of why two roller shades that look identical can cost thousands of dollars apart - and what's actually different between them. Hunter Douglas expands PowerView Automation compatibility with Alta Window Fashions. Alta Window Fashions motorized shades are now compatible with PowerView Automation, giving custom integrators a more value-conscious option for incorporating automated shading into layered residential projects New York, NY - June 24, 2026 - Hunter Douglas, the world's leading manufacturer of custom window treatments, today announces that Alta Window Fashions motorized shades are now compatible with PowerView Automation, giving custom integrators a more value-conscious option for incorporating automated shading into layered residential projects. With Alta shades available at pricing that can be significantly lower than comparable automated shading systems, the addition allows dealers to keep automated shading in scope for secondary rooms and budget-sensitive spaces that may have otherwise been left untreated. As part of the Hunter Douglas family of brands, Alta Window Fashions gives integrators access to a broad assortment of shading styles homeowners have come to expect from premium window treatment brands, including roller shades, honeycomb shades, natural woven shades, sheer shadings, and wood blinds. Curated fabrics, textures, and finishes across the portfolio allow dealers to maintain design continuity while tailoring specifications to different project goals, room priorities, and homeowner preferences. "Integrators are often balancing different priorities across a single project, particularly in secondary spaces where homeowners may be more budget conscious," said Scott Stephenson, Sr. Director of Product, Global Motorization at Hunter Douglas. "Alta gives dealers a way to keep automated shading in scope for those spaces while continuing to use the same PowerView platform, smart home integrations, and automation experience they already know from Hunter Douglas." Bringing Alta into the PowerView Automation ecosystem reflects Hunter Douglas' continued focus on helping integrators approach shading projects with greater versatility, portfolio depth, and confidence in the homeowner experience.
