Joby Aviation's eVTOL air taxis inch closer to FAA approval in $9T market race

Joby Aviation's electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft participated in FAA demonstration flights across the Dallas-Fort Worth region in September, showcasing routes to major urban hubs and the international airport. The company is progressing through the final stage of FAA type certification to prove its aircraft is airworthy. Morgan Stanley estimates the urban air mobility market could reach $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 trillion by 2050. Joby acquired Blade Urban Air Mobility for $125 million, gaining an established customer base and generating $36.2 million in second-quarter revenue through chartered helicopter and jet flights. However, Joby must still complete FAA certification and prove it can manufacture and operate aircraft at scale. The company's in-house manufacturing requires more capital and labour than competitors' contract approaches. Joby has 12 aircraft in production and expects to deliver two in 2026.

Demystifying the eVTOL industry - opinion.

Demystifying the eVTOL industry - opinion. The flying taxi isn't science fiction anymore. It's a certified aircraft with a waiting list. SEPTEMBER 30, 2026 08:34 Updated: SEPTEMBER 30, 2026 11:57 I need to be in Tel Aviv for a 9 a.m. meeting. By car, it will take an hour and a half that I don't have. Instead, I open an app and order a flying taxi. It lands near my house within a few minutes. There's no pilot. I get in, it lifts off and joins a low-level air corridor reserved for exactly this kind of traffic. I open my tablet and prepare for my meeting while the aircraft handles the rest. The corridor isn't too congested this morning. Twenty-five minutes later, I land near my destination. I walk in rested, prepped, and on time. None of that is available to me yet, in Tel Aviv or almost anywhere else. However, it's closer to reality than most people realize. So, let's demystify this industry, because the gap between the hype and the reality is unusually wide in both directions. eVTOL stands for electric vertical take-off and landing. Strip away the acronym, and it's an aircraft that takes off and lands like a helicopter, but it is powered by batteries and multiple electric motors instead of a single turbine. That last part matters more than it sounds. A traditional helicopter has one point of failure at its rotor. Most eVTOL designs use distributed electric propulsion - several independent rotors - so that if one or two fail, the aircraft can still land safely using the others. That redundancy is a big part of why the industry believes it can eventually get comfortable removing the pilot, not just electrifying the aircraft. Where you can already fly today. This is the part that surprises people most: Commercial eVTOL passenger service already exists and has for over a year. China's EHang received the world's first Air Operator Certificates for pilotless, human-carrying aircraft in March 2025, and its EH216-S has been flying ticketed passengers on tourism routes in Guangzhou and Hefei ever since, with tens of thousands of demonstration flights logged. Thailand has authorized EHang to fly real passengers, including its own civil aviation chief, under a supervised regulatory sandbox designed to lead toward eventual full commercial approval. In the Gulf, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have positioned themselves as the next launch markets, betting on regulatory agility and brutal summer heat that makes a 90-second aerial hop more attractive than sitting in traffic. Joby has an exclusive agreement to begin service in Dubai. Archer is targeting Abu Dhabi. In the United States, the FAA finalized Part 194 - its dedicated certification rule for this entire aircraft category - in late 2024, and in March 2026 launched the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program covering eight projects across 26 states, with the first flights, Joby's, scheduled to begin in Texas this month. One important caveat, though. Almost everything operating commercially or about to launch outside China is piloted, not autonomous. The vision in my opening story, a genuinely empty cockpit, is real in Guangzhou today. Everywhere else, it's still a few years out. It's also worth being honest about pace because the industry's numbers and the regulator's numbers tell different stories. The FAA's latest Aerospace Forecast projects that in the first year after AAM aircraft enter commercial service, expected to begin with this month's Texas flights, there will be just seven aircraft flying a combined 24,600 departures, on an assumption of roughly 28 trips per aircraft per day. By 2028, the agency expects these figures to grow to as many as 80 eVTOLs flying around 335,000 services annually.

Pentagon shifts eVTOL focus to hybrid aircraft, Archer lands $142M Air Force contract

The Pentagon is shifting its eVTOL aircraft priorities towards hybrid propulsion and autonomous flight technologies, impacting contracts with Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation. Archer holds a contract with the US Air Force's Agility Prime programme valued at up to $142 million, whilst Joby's contract reached a potential $131 million. The Department of Defence reduced Joby's contract scope in 2025 as priorities changed. Joby is responding by acquiring defence contractor Resonant Sciences for approximately $500 million, which generated over $100 million in revenue over the previous 12 months. Archer has partnered with Anduril to develop Thunder, an autonomous hybrid-electric VTOL platform for military missions. In August, Archer announced plans to acquire Boeing's Insitu, Wisk Aero, and SkyGrid businesses, with Insitu alone generating over $200 million annually.

Joby stock has a futuristic story. Here's my long-term Price Prediction.

Joby stock has a futuristic story. Here's my long-term Price Prediction. Joby Aviation has lost more than half its value in 2026, yet analysts see a path back above $10 and bulls are eyeing $12 by next year. The question is whether a handful of upcoming catalysts can close that gap... This post may contain links from our sponsors and affiliates, and Flywheel Publishing may receive compensation for actions taken through them. Joby Aviation (NYSE:JOBY | JOBY Price Prediction) has had a brutal 2026. Shares are down 52.73% year-to-date and off 62.68% over the past year, sliding from a 52-week high of $19.98 to roughly $6.24. The pullback reflects impatience with FAA certification timing and heavy cash burn. CEO JoeBen Bevirt still frames 2026 as the year Joby is "unlocking the third dimension of mobility and turning electric vertical flight from an extraordinary technology into an everyday reality." Let's walk through what it would take for JOBY to reach $12 per share in 2027. Wall street is split, but the average target sits well above spot. The consensus analyst price target is $10.68, implying meaningful upside from current levels. Coverage is genuinely mixed: 1 Strong Buy, 2 Buys, 5 Holds, 2 Sells and 1 Strong Sell. What the bears are missing is the revenue trajectory. Trailing revenue reached $116.3 million, up 2,574.93% year over year, and Joby has beaten revenue estimates in 3 of the last 3 quarters, including an 82.66% beat in Q4 2025 and a 27.18% beat in Q2 2026. Management raised full-year 2026 guidance to $115 million. Path to $12: here is the math. Joby is unprofitable, so traditional P/E is useless. On price-to-sales, the stock trades at 53.54x trailing revenue. At $12, with roughly 993.87 million shares outstanding, market cap would be near $12 billion. Get your guide here (sponsor) Layer in 2027 revenue scaling toward $250-$300 million as Blade grows and eVTOL commercial flights begin, and the implied multiple compresses meaningfully, even at the higher price. That is the setup bulls need. What could push JOBY to $12? * First revenue flights: Joby plans first EIDP flights in Texas in September 2026 across Dallas-Fort Worth, progressing to paying passengers. * Certification progress: Type Certification Stage 3 is at 83% Joby / 77% FAA, with five conforming aircraft flying and 12 more in production. * Toyota capital and manufacturing: A $250 million direct investment is expected to close late 2026 or early 2027, plus a JV for high-volume production. * Blade demand: Q2 seats sold jumped over 50% year over year, with aircraft availability now the binding constraint. * International launches: Dubai passenger service under a 6-year exclusive market agreement, plus Virgin Atlantic in the UK. * Liquidity cushion: Roughly $2.3 billion in cash and short-term investments funds the ramp. History shows JOBY can move fast in either direction. With a beta of 2.683 and a 52-week range of $5.93 to $19.98, JOBY moves in double-digit percentages routinely. The stock traded near $15.36 as recently as November 2025, so $12 would be a reversion to where the market already valued the story less than a year ago. A model weighted to the analyst target projects a base case of $11.37 and a bull case of $14.55 by September 2027. Verdict on $12 by 2027. Hitting $12 would require roughly a double from today. That is ambitious, but Joby already trades well below its own recent range, analysts already peg fair value near $10.68, and 2027 is set up as the year commercial revenue begins scaling behind Toyota's capital and the EIPP flight program. The hurdles are real: certification timing, $385M-$415M in H2 2026 cash burn, and continued share issuance. Returns at this level should not be assumed every year, but I have outlined the blueprint for how JOBY could see outsized returns in 2027.
