Bending Spoons lays off a "large part" of Airtable after $1.28B takeover

Bending Spoons, the Italian tech conglomerate that recently bought Airtable, is laying off a "large part" of the software company. It plans to rebuild the business around smaller teams and AI features. Federico Simionato, the company's product leader, said on X that the cuts reflect a "deep belief that small teams ship more and better," not the employees' work. It is unclear how many people are affected. Bending Spoons announced in August that it would acquire the spreadsheet and database app for $1.28 billion. Airtable product lead Alessandro Savarese said departing staff will leave by the end of the week with "substantial separation packages." Airtable will focus on its core platform and AI features, he said.

How to automate repetitive tasks: A real-world case study for small teams.

How to automate repetitive tasks: A real-world case study for small teams. Discover how a small marketing agency slashed 20 hours of weekly manual work by automating repetitive tasks. Learn the step-by-step process, tools, and ROI calculations to apply to your own business. You're staring at a spreadsheet, copying and pasting data for the third time this week. The client reports are due, but your team is already stretched thin. Sound familiar? This was the daily reality for a 12-person marketing agency I worked with - until REWORK Digital automated their most repetitive tasks. The problem: 20 hours wasted weekly on manual work. The agency's core issue was report generation. Every Monday, the team spent: * 5 hours manually pulling data from Google Analytics * 4 hours formatting Excel sheets * 3 hours copying data into client-facing templates * 2 hours checking for errors * 6 hours emailing finalized reports Total: 20 hours per week - time that could've been spent on strategy or client acquisition. Step 1: identify the right tasks to automate. Not all repetitive tasks are worth automating. REWORK Digital used the 80/20 rule: focus on tasks consuming 80% of the time but delivering only 20% of the value. For this agency, report generation was the clear candidate. Tools Mentioned: Trello for task mapping, Clockify for time tracking. Step 2: choose the right automation tools. REWORK Digital selected Airtable for data centralization and Automate.io (now Integrately) for workflow automation. Why? Airtable's flexible database structure could handle their varied data sources, and Integrately's pre-built templates reduced setup time. Cost Breakdown: * Airtable: $20/month for the Pro plan * Integrately: $49/month for the Growth plan * Estimated developer time: 15 hours at $50/hour = $750 (one-time) Step 3: build the automated workflow. The workflow REWORK Digital created: * Data Pull: Integrately automatically fetches Google Analytics data daily * Formatting: Airtable scripts format the data into client templates * Error Checking: Built-in Airtable validation rules flag inconsistencies * Delivery: Reports are emailed via Gmail's API integration Time Saved: 18 hours/week (90% reduction) Step 4: measure the ROI. The agency's monthly savings: * Time: 72 hours (18 hours/week x 4 weeks) * Labor Cost: $2,880 (72 hours x $40/hour average wage) * Tool Costs: $69/month Net Monthly Savings: $2,811 Intangible Benefits: * Reduced errors in reports * Faster delivery times (from 24 hours to 2 hours) * Higher team morale Common pitfalls to avoid. * Over-automating: Don't automate tasks that require human judgment (e.g., creative strategy) * Ignoring Maintenance: Budget 1-2 hours monthly for updates * Skipping Testing: Always run workflows in a sandbox environment first For more insights on avoiding automation pitfalls, explore its blog. Next steps for your business. * Map Your Workflows: Use a tool like Lucidchart to visualize processes * Calculate Potential ROI: Compare tool costs against time savings * Start Small: Automate one high-impact task before scaling The agency's transformation proves automation doesn't require a massive budget or technical expertise. By focusing on the right tasks and tools, even small teams can reclaim hundreds of hours annually.

Google adds new Connected Apps across Gemini.

Google adds new Connected Apps across Gemini. Google has started rolling out a major expansion of third-party integrations for Gemini. - Editor-in-Chief Sep 23, 2026, 1:21 PM EDT Google is giving Gemini a much bigger role in your everyday apps. The company has started rolling out a new wave of Connected Apps for Gemini, bringing a range of third-party services directly into the AI assistant. Instead of jumping between different tabs and apps to complete a task, Gemini can now connect with services for productivity, creative work and everyday activities. Google says the new integrations are beginning to roll out today, September 23. The expansion covers a surprisingly broad mix of services. On the productivity side, Gemini can now connect with Airtable, Linear, monday.com, PandaDoc, Wispr AI and Zoho. These integrations are designed for tasks such as managing projects, organizing databases and dictating notes. Then there is the creative side. Google is adding Adobe, Picsart, Squarespace and Webflow, allowing Gemini to work with tools used for creating visual assets, developing websites and turning ideas into finished creative projects. The lifestyle category is just as broad. Gemini can connect to Apartments.com for apartment searches, Experian for monitoring credit, Peloton for workout planning and SeatGeek for finding event tickets. That range is what makes this update more interesting than a simple list of new integrations. Google is essentially trying to make Gemini a place where you can start a task without first deciding which individual app you need. For example, instead of opening a project-management service first, you could bring the relevant connected app into a Gemini conversation and work from there. The same basic idea applies to creative projects, fitness planning and other tasks supported by the new integrations. Google says users can connect these apps through Gemini's settings. Once connected, they can be brought into a conversation using an @ mention or by simply asking Gemini directly. That last part is particularly important because it makes the integrations feel less like traditional app extensions and more like tools Gemini can call when they're needed. The user doesn't necessarily have to think about the underlying app first; Gemini becomes the starting point. Of course, how useful this becomes will depend heavily on what each individual integration can actually do. Connecting an app to Gemini doesn't automatically mean every feature of that service is available through the assistant. Google is also rolling the new Connected Apps out gradually, so availability may vary. Still, the direction is clear. Gemini is moving beyond simply generating text, answering questions and summarizing information. Google wants it to interact with the services people already use and become a more practical layer between users and their apps. And with the latest additions spanning productivity, creativity and lifestyle services, Gemini is starting to look less like a standalone chatbot and more like a hub for getting things done.

Airtable interfaces: updated for 2026 (full tutorial).

Airtable interfaces: updated for 2026 (full tutorial). How to build Airtable interfaces in 2026: A complete guide to user permissions and ai-powered design. Your team doesn't want to work in spreadsheets anymore, and they shouldn't have to. When you're managing a marketing content calendar or any complex workflow in Airtable, the database view gives everyone admin-level access to change anything - including deleting critical data or breaking formulas. Airtable interfaces solve this problem by letting you control exactly what each team member sees and edits, all while presenting data in a clean, purpose-built format. And in 2026, building these interfaces just got dramatically faster thanks to Claude's MCP integration. Why the database layer isn't enough for your team. The Airtable database - or what's called the data layer - is where all your records live and where tables connect to each other through linked records. In a marketing content calendar, for example, content links to campaigns and team members, creating a relational structure that beats spreadsheets every time. But databases have a fatal flaw: they offer no permission controls. Anyone with access can edit data, add fields, modify formulas, or delete records entirely. This makes the database layer a nonstarter for teams, because one wrong move can break the entire system for everyone. How interfaces control access and protect your data. Interfaces let you lock down permissions so people can only see and edit what they're supposed to. You can hide certain information from specific roles, control who can edit which fields, and prevent users from taking destructive actions. This means your marketing team can update content statuses and publish dates without accidentally deleting campaigns or changing formulas. Interfaces also let you choose how data appears - whether as a calendar, grid, chart, or dashboard - so each team member sees exactly what they need when they need it. Building your first interface manually takes minutes. To build an interface, click "Build an Interface," choose a design type like calendar or dashboard, and select your source table. For a content calendar, you'd choose the content table and set the published date as the calendar field. From there, you can customize colors by status (on team plans or better), control what happens when someone clicks a record, and decide which fields are editable. You can enable inline editing for quick changes or form editing for more controlled submissions where you can make fields required and ensure all information is entered at once before saving. Using Claude's MCP to Build Interfaces with AI in Seconds. In 2026, Airtable introduced MCP (Model Context Protocol) support, which means you can now build interfaces directly through Claude or other AI tools. After connecting the Airtable MCP in Claude and setting permissions, you provide a detailed prompt that includes your app ID (found in the Airtable URL starting with "app"), the table you want to use, and exactly what you want on the page. For example, you can ask Claude to create a marketing lead dashboard with numbers showing content in review and scheduled, plus a bar chart and grid view. Claude builds all four components in one prompt, saving you significant time compared to manual setup. Fine-Tuning ai-generated interfaces and publishing to your team. While Claude can build interfaces quickly through the MCP, you'll likely want to refine what it creates before publishing. You can still manually edit components, adjust permissions, and customize the layout in build mode. The MCP handles the heavy lifting of initial setup - pointing to the right tables, adding components, and configuring basic settings - but you maintain full control over the final product. Once you're satisfied, publish the interface and share it with team members who need access. Crucially, you can share interface access without giving users access to the underlying database, which protects your data structure. Understanding Canvas versus interfaces for your use case. Airtable Canvas launched in 2026 as a new feature that's similar to interfaces but with key differences. Canvas allows you to pull multiple tables into one page for a more app-like experience, while interfaces point to one source table at a time. However, Canvas currently requires users to have database access when you share it, unlike interfaces which can be shared independently. As of September 2026, Canvas remains in early alpha testing with no guarantee of full rollout, making interfaces the more reliable choice for deploying controlled user experiences to your team. Conclusion. Airtable interfaces transform your database from an all-access admin panel into a controlled, role-specific workspace that keeps your data safe while empowering your team. With the MCP integration in 2026, you can now build these interfaces in seconds using AI, then refine them manually to match your exact needs. Whether you're managing a content calendar, project pipeline, or any other workflow, interfaces give you the permission controls and user experience your team deserves.
