About the Job

Requirements

  • Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years and meet the educational requirements before the employment start date.
  • Strong background in power system protection, knowledge of protection relays (including differential, distance, directional, and traveling-wave-based protection), and hands-on experience configuring protection relays and conducting relay hardware-in-the-loop testing and results analysis using Synchrowave or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of power electronics, control theory, power system stability, and inverter-based resource (IBR) modeling, control, and stability analysis, including small-signal and transient stability analysis.
  • Experience with short-circuit programs such as CAPE and ASPEN; familiarity with power system simulation tools such as PSCAD, PSSE, PSLF, MATLAB/Simulink, and RSCAD; and high proficiency in Python programming.
  • Ability to work independently and troubleshoot issues.

Responsibilities

  • Develop protective relay models based on vendor relay datasheets and manuals.
  • Perform comprehensive fault studies to evaluate existing protection schemes, propose improved schemes, and validate them using simulated relay models and/or commercial protective relays in hardware-in-the-loop for an industry-collaborated project.
  • Investigate IBR-driven stability from device to system level and propose stability-improvement control strategies for IBR-dominant power systems with low inertia and short-circuit ratio.
  • Build an electromagnetic-transient model of IBR-dominated power systems in PSCAD, develop automated scripts to run large sets of simulation scenarios, and extract key features for stability and other studies.
  • Lead and/or contribute to journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports.

About the Company

National Laboratory of the Rockies

Renewable energy research and data services

NREL analyzes and develops renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and provides energy data and research services to government agencies, private companies, and universities. Its offerings include research outputs, data products, and Web services through a developer network that gives clients access to renewable-energy data and information on alternative fuels. The work is funded mainly by government grants and partnerships, and NREL uses its findings to help clients create sustainable energy solutions and policy guidance. The organization differs from many peers by being a government-supported national lab with large, open data resources and a focus on practical deployment, standards, and collaboration across public and private sectors. Its goals include accelerating the adoption of clean energy, advancing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, promoting circular economy practices and decarbonizing its own operations to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
