About the company

Caterpillar makes construction and mining machines, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and locomotives for contractors, mines, energy companies and data center builders. It is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and its yellow Cat bulldozers and excavators work in nearly every country. Customers buy or rent machines through independent Cat dealers, while its engines and turbines generate electricity and push natural gas through pipelines. Caterpillar earns money from equipment sales and from the parts and repairs that dealers supply over a machine's working life. It was formed in 1925 when California's Holt and Best tractor companies merged, and it is based in Irving, Texas.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Data centers drive growth: power generation sales jumped 72% in the June 2026 quarter on demand for generators and turbines.
  • Factory hiring is growing: a $1 billion North Carolina plant, announced September 2026, is expected to create 1,950 jobs.
  • Recurring service work adds stability: parts and service brought in $24 billion in 2025, over a third of sales.

What critics are saying

  • Tariffs keep getting costlier: in August 2026, Caterpillar forecast $2.2 billion of 2026 tariff costs, up from 2025's $1.8 billion.
  • Patent fight threatens imports: in December 2025, rival Bobcat asked US trade regulators to ban some Cat loaders and excavators.
  • Expect five office days a week: since June 2025, US office staff must come in daily, and attendance affects reviews.

What makes Caterpillar unique

  • Power, not bulldozers, is its biggest business: engines and turbines brought in $28.6 billion in 2025, topping construction's $25.1 billion.
  • It runs its own lender: Cat Financial's overdue loans fell to 1.31% in June 2026, the lowest since 1998.
  • It also makes gas turbines: San Diego-based Solar Turbines builds 1 to 39 megawatt units for pipelines and power.

Caterpillar shares fall 3.1% to $627 as RBC cuts price target to $722 from $897

Caterpillar shares fell 3.09% to $627.39 at 13:10 ET on October 30, as investors focused on fourth-quarter expectations and the outlook for 2027. RBC cut its price target to $722 from $897 and kept its Sector Perform rating. It cited concerns about implied fourth-quarter performance and limited visibility into next year. The construction-equipment and power-systems maker reported third-quarter revenue up 17% to about $20.7 billion. Adjusted operating margin rose to 20.6% from 17.5% a year earlier. At 26.99 times earnings, the shares could stay sensitive to any disappointment. Investors want evidence that demand, pricing, and deliveries can sustain the stronger margins into 2027.

ETFs net sellers of Caterpillar with $19.0M outflow, second straight day of selling

US-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were net sellers of Caterpillar (CAT) on Wednesday, October 28, pulling a net $19.0 million from the stock. Thirty-two ETFs bought and 13 sold, but the sellers moved larger sums. It was the second straight day of net selling, after $25.3 million on Tuesday. The largest sellers were AVLV ($28.5 million), DIA ($12.7 million), and DFUS ($1.3 million). Caterpillar has a market cap of $297.6 billion. Its trailing 12-month revenue was $74.73 billion, up 21.5% over one year, and its net margin was 14.2%. The stock trades at $647.39, and its year-to-date return is 13.97%.

Oppenheimer holds $1,009 Caterpillar target, 54% upside, despite 38% slide

Oppenheimer analyst Kristen Owen reiterated her Outperform rating on Caterpillar and a $1,009 price target, 54% above the current price. The stock is 38% below its June 30 record high after a weak fourth-quarter outlook. Third-quarter sales rose 17% to a record $20.7 billion, and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) reached $7.20, from $4.95. Power generation sales grew 30% on data centre demand, and backlog hit a record $78 billion. Consensus 2026 EPS is $27.33, up from $24.72 90 days ago. Still, Oppenheimer's target implies about 35x forward earnings, against a five-year average of 19x. The Street's average target is about $940. The company's 2027 outlook in late January, particularly on margins, could change the picture.

Caterpillar shares fall 9.5% as $20.68B Q3 revenue narrowly misses estimates despite earnings beat

Caterpillar (CAT) shares fell 9.5% in premarket trading after the company beat third-quarter earnings expectations but narrowly missed revenue estimates. Adjusted earnings were $7.20 per share, up from $4.95 a year earlier and above the $7.03 analysts expected, according to Fiscal.ai. Revenue rose 17% to $20.68 billion, $8 million short of the $20.69 billion estimate. Power and energy sales rose 18% to $8.78 billion. Power-generation sales jumped 30% to $3.42 billion, driven by turbines, related services, and large engines used mainly in data centres. Operating profit rose 38% to $4.214 billion, including $128 million in tariff recoveries. The company returned $1.9 billion to shareholders. "Our third-quarter results reflect the durability of our end markets, with strong order rates and a record backlog," said chief executive officer Joe Creed.

Caterpillar has beaten the S&P 500 five years running, but is it skill? Only 8 of 485 stocks match

Caterpillar (CAT) shares have beaten the S&P 500 in each of the last five years, a streak only 8 of 485 current index members with five years of prices have matched. Luck alone would produce about six such stocks, since roughly four in ten beat the index in a typical year. The gap is too small to show whether any of the eight owe it to merit. Net income rose in four of the five years and grew 110.6% overall, while the share price rose 254.6% before dividends. Profit fell 13.1% in the year to September 2025, yet the stock still won. Power generation is now the focus. Sales to users rose 72% in the June 2026 quarter on data centre demand, and backlog is up about 92%. Management raised its 2026 sales growth outlook to the mid- to high teens.
