About the job

Requirements
  • Bring deep expertise in at least one relevant harm domain, developed through integrity, trust and safety, security, investigations or related work.
  • Be proficient in SQL and Python and have experience writing reliable and efficient production code for detection and data processing.
  • Apply quantitative analysis and machine-learning methods to measure risks and evaluate system effectiveness; understand data limitations and reason about missed harms, false positives and appropriate interventions.
  • Have experience setting strategy and delivering complex, cross-functional technical projects, turning ambiguous problems into plans, aligning people with different priorities and driving work through to completion.
  • Use language models and other automation to scale analytical, investigative or operational work, with evaluation and human oversight appropriate to the problem.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation that may involve resolving urgent escalations outside normal working hours.
  • Some investigations may involve sensitive content, including sexual, violent or otherwise disturbing material.
Responsibilities
  • Define and drive protection strategy for a harm area or launch by translating ambiguous risks into goals, priorities and roadmaps, and making trade-offs based on evidence, risk and available capacity.
  • Directly build and maintain harm detection by developing production signals, classifiers and pipelines using SQL, Python, machine learning and language models, and integrating them with shared engineering platforms.
  • Lead cross-functional execution by translating between specialist roles, establishing shared understanding and ownership, resolving technical and organisational dependencies, and communicating recommendations and specific asks clearly.
  • Investigate emerging harms and abuse patterns with domain experts to distinguish harmful activity from legitimate use, develop detection criteria, and inform policies and review protocols with Policy and Operations partners.
  • Evaluate and improve the complete system of defence by measuring remaining harm, detection quality and intervention effectiveness, collaborating with Data Science on more sophisticated metrics, and using expert feedback and operational outcomes to guide improvements.
  • Protect product and model launches by defining data, detection and review requirements, establishing monitoring, investigating gaps and critical escalations, and driving improvements informed by post-launch findings.
  • Scale effective approaches with language models, agents and reusable tools; choose where automation and human judgement are needed; and build documentation and processes that improve reliability and help others extend the work.
  • Design, build, evaluate and maintain production detection systems, develop signals and classifiers, and improve their ability to identify harmful activity accurately as products and behaviour evolve.
  • Connect detection with policy, review, interventions, enforcement and measurement, and continually calibrate the system against real cases and expert judgement as it scales.
  • Identify what needs to be built or changed, set priorities, align partners, resolve dependencies, communicate evidence, decisions and trade-offs, and work directly on whatever is blocking system effectiveness.
Desired Qualifications
  • Additional machine-learning or software engineering experience is a plus.
  • Additional data science or measurement background is a plus.

About the company

OpenAI researches and builds artificial intelligence models and turns them into products for people, developers, and businesses, with a stated mission of making sure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Its launch of ChatGPT in 2022 brought generative AI into everyday use. People use ChatGPT to ask questions, write, code, and analyze files, developers build OpenAI's models into their own apps through its API, and its Codex agent works through coding tasks on its own. OpenAI earns money from ChatGPT subscriptions, business plans, and API usage. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others co-founded it in 2015; it is based in San Francisco and overseen by a nonprofit, the OpenAI Foundation.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are compounding: OpenAI's yearly revenue pace doubled from $24 billion in March 2026 to nearly $50 billion in September.
  • Equity turns into cash regularly: staff sold $7 billion of shares in August 2026, after $6.6 billion in October 2025.
  • Room to grow: OpenAI plans to nearly double staff to 8,000 by year-end and listed 816 openings in October 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Its chief rival pulled ahead: Claude maker Anthropic's $965 billion valuation in May 2026 topped OpenAI's $852 billion.
  • Profits are years away: OpenAI's own forecast, reported in September 2026, shows $278 billion of cash burn through 2030.
  • Expect leadership churn: 15 senior leaders, including the revenue and applications chiefs, left OpenAI between January and September 2026.

What makes OpenAI unique

  • A nonprofit is in charge: the OpenAI Foundation appoints OpenAI's whole board and held a 26% stake in October 2025.
  • ChatGPT reaches about one in seven people on Earth: 1.2 billion used it each week as of September 2026.
  • Microsoft is a major part-owner: it held about 27% in October 2025 and licenses OpenAI's models through 2032.

Microsoft booked $10B in OpenAI revenue last quarter, nearly 11% of its total

Microsoft generated $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments, in the quarter ended September 30, it said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday. That is nearly 11% of its total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion. For the 2026 fiscal year, OpenAI-related revenue hit $24.1 billion. Microsoft also reported $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI, up from $6 billion at the end of June. The ties are loosening. Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI must keep sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap, while it may work with rival cloud providers. Microsoft's stake in OpenAI fell from about 25% in June to 24% in September.

OpenAI launches mid-tier GPT-6.1 Terra at $1M input tokens, a tenth of Astra's price

OpenAI has added a mid-range model, GPT-6.1 Terra, to its GPT-6.1 family. It offers strong performance at a lower price than the company's top tiers. Terra costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. That compares with $2 and $10 for GPT-6.1 Sol, and $10 and $50 for GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI says its standard API prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Artificial Analysis, which tracks model cost and performance, says Terra is more intelligent for less than a third of the cost of the last Terra-class model. Ted Sanders, a member of technical staff at OpenAI, called it "not a bombshell release" for subscribers. Terra's knowledge cutoff is June 1, 2026.

Fanatics uses OpenAI's Codex for "Shop the Look" tool, lifting product engagement 10%

Fanatics has built a "Shop the Look" feature with OpenAI's Codex that suggests coordinated, in-stock team merchandise on product pages. It matches items by team and intended style, such as a hat and socks to go with a jersey. The company lists more than 1.5 million unique SKUs and releases upwards of a thousand new products each week. Photo shoots and styled outfits cannot keep pace, said Justin Tsai, chief product officer for Fanatics Commerce. Since launch, views of recommended items have risen 10%. Team merchandise remains Fanatics' biggest revenue source, and chief executive officer Michael Rubin said the commerce business will exceed $7 billion in revenue this year.
