About the company

Williams Racing is a Formula One racing team based in Grove, England, with a long history dating back to 1977. It designs, builds, and races its own Formula One cars, conducting car development, aerodynamics work, and race operations to compete on the world stage. Unlike many rivals, Williams built a strong track record as an independent constructor, winning nine Constructors’ Championships between 1980 and 1997 and later listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2011 before being sold to private equity Dorilton Capital in 2020. The team differentiates itself through its engineering heritage, a history of independent ownership, and a commitment to steady investment intended to restore on-track performance. Williams’ goal is to return to the front of the grid and win races and championships while maintaining long-term stability and competitiveness even in a budget-conscious era.

Williams gears up after Baku B-spec yields mixed results.

Williams gears up after Baku B-spec yields mixed results. Williams earned its first points in a season with the newly released B-spec FW48 at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a rare reward for a team traditionally distant from the midfield. Grid penalties and qualifying performance. Drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon both qualified ninth from the chaotic pit exits, yet Sainz's seventh-place effort was temporarily silenced by a five-position grid penalty. The penalty left the Red Bull driver starting 14th, dragging a potentially promising points weekend into an uncertain race. Despite the setback, both cars navigated a brief Q3 session that snapped them out of the back of the field - a milestone not seen since the opening rounds of 2026. The upgrade appeared to provide a palpable lift in lap times during FP2, hinting at a future that could include standing near the likes of Haas, Racing Bulls and Audi. Race day: points, crashes and the grid shuffle. The start went downhill when a rear-end collision involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris left the field stalled. This incident triggered a safety car that, coupled with Kiwi-New Zealander Alex Albon's sharp late-brake entry, resulted in a wall impact on lap 31. Albon's car, performing under the updated floor and aerodynamic refinements, exposed a well-documented weakness - a tendency to lift the front wheel at high speed. In his own words, "The wind gust, combined with a slightly later brake, tipped the car over the edge and we hit the wall a few metres." Across the track, Williams seized a 10th-place finish that carried far more than a single point. It underscored the successful integration of the car's new floor, the correct weight, and vital aerodynamic parts that had been stagnating for months. Driver comments and team perspectives. Team principal James Vowles admitted the season's "mammoth effort" paid off, explaining that the initial stint's lack of pace was a learning moment. "We recognise this year's still a bit behind, but the upgrade put us in the midfield fight," he said. Driver Alex Albon agreed, noting "It didn't just get us to Q3 out of nowhere; it put us firmly in the midfield bracket." He stressed that the short-term advantage would sharpen further in future races, hinting that the more downforce-heavy circuits in Malaysia and Singapore would reveal new insights. 1) Sainz added that the car feels marginally quicker, yet the gap "remains huge" - a truth the team sees as a healthy, incremental step. Future outlook: 2027 and beyond. Williams is capitalising on this upgrade as a springboard for the forthcoming 2027 season. Team principal Vowles confirmed that the new chassis is scheduled to enter the 2027 campaign, a strategic decision to combat the rapid evolution of rival vehicles. "The aerodynamic and power-unit changes for next year are smaller in scale, allowing us to absorb them more cleanly," Vowles stated. "However, it will take time to overcome the winter setbacks and match the pace of the front-running teams." He further emphasized that the cost cap constrains the ability to chase relentless pace upgrades, but he expressed confidence that the groundwork laid in Baku will provide a stronger foundation for a 2027 push.

Williams targets progress with FW48 upgrade.

Williams targets progress with FW48 upgrade. FansBRANDS(R) Team | September 23, 2026 Williams Racing is set to introduce a significant upgrade package for their FW48 chassis at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This development marks a key moment in the team's ongoing efforts to improve their competitiveness within the midfield group, although expectations remain measured among the drivers and the wider paddock. The upgrade package focuses on a revised, lighter chassis combined with new aerodynamic components aimed at reducing the car's overall weight. This weight reduction is expected to provide an immediate lap time benefit, addressing one of the critical performance areas for Williams this season. Despite these changes, the team acknowledges that they remain behind rivals such as Alpine, Racing Bulls, and Audi, who have also advanced their cars since the FW48's initial design phase. Williams drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon have both expressed cautious optimism about the upgrade. Sainz described the team's performance at the Madrid event as "rock bottom," with the FW48 running more than three seconds off the pace and over 1.5 seconds behind the midfield leaders. He anticipates that the upgrade will bring the car closer to the performance level it should have had at the start of the season, but he does not expect it to be enough to immediately challenge for points. Albon highlighted the challenges involved in introducing a chassis upgrade mid-season, noting the significance of the package if it performs as expected on track. He pointed out that the weight reduction alone should contribute to improved lap times, independent of aerodynamic gains. Both drivers recognize that the midfield rivals continue to develop rapidly, so the upgrade may not allow Williams to leapfrog ahead in the standings immediately. The success of the FW48 upgrade will depend heavily on how well the simulation data correlates with real-world track performance, a variable that can differ from one team to another. Sainz recalled his podium finish in Baku during the 2025 season but tempered expectations by stating that this year's upgrade is unlikely to deliver similar immediate results. Instead, it represents a positive step toward future development and performance gains. Williams' approach reflects the ongoing technical and competitive challenges faced by teams striving to close the gap in a highly dynamic midfield battle. The FW48 upgrade package is a clear attempt to address fundamental performance deficits, particularly in weight reduction, but the team remains realistic about the scale of improvement it may bring in the short term. The comments from Sainz and Albon underline the cautious stance within Williams as they prepare to test the new package in Azerbaijan. While the upgrade is a notable milestone, it is part of a longer-term effort to enhance the car's competitiveness rather than a quick fix for immediate points scoring.

New tech to recharge batteries in seconds.

New tech to recharge batteries in seconds. By Stephen Ottley Updated September 21 2026 - 4:02pm, first published 11:00am An unlikely contender has emerged in the race to recharge electric vehicles - mining giant Fortescue. It is developing technology that could recharge an electric car in less than a minute, thanks to ground-breaking new technology it is developing. Fortescue wants to make its mining operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia electrified by 2030 and that includes everything from trains to its 240-tonne haul trucks. Naturally this means developing ultra-fast charging, as the trucks need to remain in steady use. Which is why under its Fortescue Zero brand, the company has invested in cutting edge electric vehicle technology, including motor development, batteries and software. Fortescue Zero is based in England and was previously known as Williams Advanced Engineering, a spin-off from the famous Williams Formula 1 team. Despite the focus on the mining sector, Fortescue Zero has remained involved in motorsport and has just announced it will enter a team in the upcoming 2026/27 Formula E all-electric racing series. Fortescue is electrifying its mining haul trucks. Ultra fast charging is the aim. Under the slogan 'from track to truck', Fortescue Zero is using motor racing to develop technology to recharge its haul trucks quicker. The goal is to use 6000kW charging to replenish the batteries in the trucks in as little as 30 minutes. Fortescue Zero introduced 'pit boost' using the 600kW charging into the Formula E series, which allows cars to recharging the batteries by 10 per cent in as little as 30 seconds. Naturally, this kind of ultra-rapid charging would have appeal to EV drivers looking for quicker stops. Currently, 400kW chargers are the most powerful in Australia, but they are only available in limited locations. The majority of the public charging network operates between 50-350kW, although BYD's luxury spin-off, Denza, has indicated it will build a network of its 1500kW Flash chargers in Australia. Using Formula E to fine tune the tech. Explaining the decision to go motor racing in Formula E, Fortescue Energy and Growth CEO Gus Pichot said it's about using the platform to innovate faster. "In racing every second counts, and innovations can be the difference between winning and losing," Pichot said. "The same goes for decarbonising our mining operations." "We need technology that can operate at extremes and push the limits. Without motorsports as an incubator and proving ground, we would not be as advanced in our decarbonisation journey as we are today." Fortescue's EV switch is about another type of green. Switching from diesel to electric power isn't just about helping the environment. Fortescue claims it can save more than 680 million litres of diesel fuel each year by going battery-powered. With diesel prices rising due to the on-going Middle East conflict, even a 10c per litre increase can add almost $100 million to its annual fuel bill. By converting its fleet of approximately 300 haul trucks to EVs it will not only save diesel and cut emissions, but it will also serve as a test bed for new EV technology for motors, batteries, software and charging that the company could then commercialise as EV sales continue to grow in Australia. De la Rosa on how Aston Martin's risky upgrades paid off.

De la Rosa on how Aston Martin's risky upgrades paid off. Pedro de la Rosa has credited Adrian Newey's management structure for stabilising Aston Martin during their high-risk B-spec redesign rollout ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. The Silverstone outfit endured a bruising start to the campaign with reliability issues and a severe lack of pace. Rather than introducing minor reactive updates, the team committed to a comprehensive mid-season redesign. Newey redefines Team Principal role. By splitting leadership duties, Newey concentrated on overarching car architecture while delegating trackside operations to Mike Krack. Speaking to Formula1.com, De la Rosa explained the dynamic. "I must say that Team Principal is a title," he noted. "It's not a job description. Adrian has said it many times. We are fortunate in the team having Mike Krack as well, an experienced Team Principal, now chief track operations." This governance split allowed the squad to maintain internal harmony during their early-season drought. The unified front held firm even as external scrutiny intensified over Lance Stroll's Q1 exit record, ensuring complete focus on their single-package approach. The stability stands in stark contrast to broader motorsport turbulence, where scheduling clashes recently saw a Nurburgring outing cancelled. The bold strategy yielded immediate performance gains, lifting Fernando Alonso and the heavily revised Aston Martin ahead of Cadillac and Williams at the Hungaroring. Further progress followed when a new Honda power unit arrived at Zandvoort. Aston Martin will now seek to extract maximum performance from their unified aerodynamic platform as the Formula 1 paddock reconvenes for the upcoming rounds.
