About the job

Requirements
  • Hands-on experience running a hardware, systems, or datacenter lab, or a similar physical compute environment, including rack-and-stack, copper and fiber cabling, power distribution units, circuits, and phase balancing.
  • Working knowledge of server hardware and its management plane, including BMC/IPMI/Redfish, BIOS/UEFI configuration, serial console, PXE/network boot, and firmware updates.
  • Enough Linux and networking knowledge—including VLANs, DHCP, DNS, and basic switch configuration—to prepare a bare machine for use by a remote engineer.
  • Experience managing vendors, contractors, quotes, and freight for physical equipment.
  • Ability to work safely with power tools, bench power supplies, and wiring or rack elevation diagrams.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and recognize when to ask for help.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and directly, especially when flagging risks or blockers.
Responsibilities
  • Run the physical lab across both sites, including receiving and staging, rack-and-stack, cabling, power distribution and load planning, cooling, and floor layout.
  • Bring up new server and accelerator platforms from crate arrival to a machine accessible over SSH, including firmware and BIOS/UEFI setup, out-of-band management, OS installation, and network provisioning.
  • Own lab hardware procurement by coordinating with teams on upcoming needs, ordering ahead, following up on quotes and lead times, and maintaining receiving and inventory processes.
  • Own end-to-end RMA processes for lab hardware, including triage, swapping, shipping, tracking, closing cases, and driving vendor escalations.
  • Build one-off setups requested by engineers, including debug and programming harnesses (JTAG/SWD/UART), remote power switching, console and KVM access, and improvised fixes for hardware operating outside its designed conditions.
  • Oversee on-site smarthands and contractor work by scoping and dispatching work and validating quality, including work by electricians, cabling crews, riggers, integrators, and OEM field engineers.
  • Handle physical access, asset auditing, and lifecycle tracking for expensive and sometimes pre-release hardware.
  • Document lab processes and build playbooks and lightweight tools for inventory, remote power, and console access so remote teams can use the lab independently.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience standing up a lab or datacenter room from an empty space, including layout, power and cooling budgets, and initial purchasing.
  • Experience with high-density accelerator systems such as GPU/TPU-class racks, liquid cooling, or pre-release/NPI hardware bring-up.
  • Electronics bench skills, including soldering and rework, using oscilloscopes and multimeters, building custom cables and debug harnesses, using JTAG probes, and light fabrication such as 3D printing, drilling, and mounting.
  • Experience supporting hardware security, firmware, or platform bring-up work.
  • Experience with DCIM or asset-management tools such as NetBox or ServiceNow.
  • Experience purchasing hard-to-source or specialty hardware and managing related compliance and logistics.

About the company

Anthropic builds the Claude family of AI models and sells them to businesses, software developers, and consumers, with research on making AI safe and understandable at the center of its work. In 2024 it introduced the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to outside apps and data that OpenAI and Google adopted the next year. People use the Claude app to write and analyze files, programmers hand coding tasks to Claude Code, and companies build Claude into their own products through its API. Anthropic earns money from subscriptions, business plans, and usage-based API fees. Siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei founded Anthropic in 2021 with other former OpenAI employees, and it is based in San Francisco.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are multiplying: Anthropic's yearly revenue pace topped $65 billion in July 2026, over sevenfold since December 2025.
  • IPO plans advanced: October 2026 reports describe investor meetings and a mid-November listing target; staff shares face lockups.
  • Lower office minimum: 627 of 646 Anthropic job posts in October 2026 require at least 25% office time.

What critics are saying

  • Job security rides on growth: Anthropic's IPO prospectus lists $518 billion in cloud and computing bills due in coming years.
  • Defense work stays off-limits: in September 2026, appeals judges voted 2-1 to let the Pentagon keep blacklisting Anthropic.
  • Growth is priced in: Anthropic's valuation reached $965 billion in May 2026, up from $380 billion in February.

What makes Anthropic unique

  • Investors don't control its board alone: Anthropic's independent Long-Term Benefit Trust elects a growing number of directors.
  • It isn't tied to one chipmaker: Claude runs on Nvidia GPUs plus custom AI chips designed by Google and Amazon.
  • It holds back its riskiest model: Claude Mythos 5.1, launched September 2026, goes only to vetted cyberdefenders and life scientists.

Anthropic previews Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent rivalling Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots

Anthropic on Wednesday announced a preview of Claude Duet, an AI agent for small businesses and professionals. It can send daily briefs, keep tabs on connected apps, and carry out tasks such as building dashboards, scheduling meetings, and creating financial forecasts. The launch follows Meta's Muse, which topped Apple's App Store after its launch last month, and OpenAI's Dots. Meta chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said more than 10 million people in the US and Canada have set up Muse agents. Anthropic said Duet is still early and "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." Personal errands, such as booking tickets, are not "quite as strong." A waitlist is open. Pro and Max subscribers can use the preview through a standalone app or the Claude website.

Eric Schmidt's 1% Anthropic stake could be worth $20B, thanks to an introduction from his ex

Eric Schmidt's early bet on Anthropic could be worth as much as $20 billion if the AI company goes public at its $2 trillion target, Bloomberg reported. The former Google chief executive officer reportedly owns a 1% stake, and the listing could come as soon as next month. Schmidt's link to Anthropic came through Cami Clark, whom he dated for three years from 2011. She later married Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei and introduced the two men. Schmidt joined Anthropic's $124 million Series A round in 2021, investing tens of millions, sources said. PitchBook data valued the company at $461 million then; it is now valued at $965 billion. Anthropic made $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of this year, up from $1.1 billion a year earlier.

Anthropic adds Harvard astrophysicist to trust that elects its board majority ahead of IPO

Anthropic has named Harvard University astrophysicist Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, which can elect a majority of the AI company's board. The arrangement may face more pressure if Anthropic goes public, as widely expected as soon as next month. Stubbs helped show that the universe's expansion is accelerating, and shared the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He is the first physicist on the Trust and fills one of two open seats. He joins Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Ben Bernanke. Reports suggest the IPO could value Anthropic at more than $2 trillion; it was valued at $965 billion in a May funding round. Last weekend, Anthropic said it would put 5% of its shares into a new Public Benefit Fund, separate from the Trust.

Amodei defends Anthropic's "race to the top" in 2,000-word reply to safety critic

Anthropic chief executive officer Dario Amodei has defended the company's "race to the top" strategy after a critic said it was putting AI safety in the back seat. On Tuesday, he published a response of nearly 2,000 words to an X post by Nathan Calvin, chief strategy officer of nonprofit Encode AI. Calvin listed nine actions he said undermined Anthropic's safety commitments, including deals for more than $500 billion in compute and growing reliance on Claude to build its models. Amodei said Anthropic can do more for industry safety by staying at the frontier. He listed nine costly choices with safety benefits, such as limiting its Mythos model to select cybersecurity partners. He conceded the company could have handled some issues better, including a draft bill circulated to Congress. Anthropic is reportedly nearing an IPO at a $2 trillion valuation in November. It reported third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion.

Musk pledges SpaceX shares to every US child, a day after Anthropic's 5% fund

Elon Musk said on X on Monday that next year he would give every child in America one SpaceX share. He called the donations "the first of many." The post drew over 33 million views in a day. President Donald Trump thanked Musk for his "incredible generosity." No plan has emerged. Musk did not explain the pledge on SpaceX's Tuesday earnings call, where the company reported a 161% rise in revenue from a year earlier. He hinted the shares could go through the new "Trump Accounts" program, which CNBC said may limit when recipients can sell. The pledge came one day after rival Anthropic announced a "Public Benefit Fund" and plans to donate 5% of its shares to it. Musk suggested Anthropic give shares "directly to the public," then said four hours later, "This is what I will be doing.
