Canadian motorcycle ban hits Spyder fans.

Canadian motorcycle ban hits Spyder fans. 44 minutes ago by Farah Stockman The New York Times The Can-Am Spyder, a three-wheel roadster popular with riders of a certain age, has inspired festivals and its own national motorcycle club. About 25,000 "Spyder Ryders" flock to events like Spyderquest in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and the Iron Butt Rally, which covers 11,000 miles in 11 days. But now this beloved adult trike has become a victim of the Trump administration's trade war with Canada. On Sept. 29, the Trump administration banned all Canadian-made motorcycles, including the Spyder, along with certain alcohol and dairy products. "It makes no sense to me whatsoever," said Harold Mette, 79, who founded the Spyder Ryders in 2011 after riding traditional motorcycles for about 40 years. A self-described "hot dog" - a term used for riders who like to go fast - Mette bought a Spyder because its two front tires allowed him to take tight turns without risking a fall. Mette said he was mystified about why his favorite vehicle ended up on the list of banned items. "Quantitatively, in terms of total dollar value of imports and exports, it's nothing," he said. The price of a 2026 Spyder starts at $27,999, according to the company's website. Mette estimated that there are about 100,000 of the vehicles in the United States. The Spyder is just one example of the many products that has become more expensive, or effectively unavailable, on both sides of the border because of tit-for-tat tariffs and trade restrictions. In the United States, the costs imposed on Canadian imports have threatened damage to the states and industries that rely on cross-border commerce, potentially denting support among voters courted by the Republican Party before the midterm elections. The Can-Am brand was once a symbol of close ties between the U.S. and Canada. The first Can-Am bike was built "through a collective effort" of individuals from Canada and the United States, which led to the name, according to a video celebrating the brand's 50th birthday. Can-Am is owned by Bombardier Recreational Products, a Canadian company that manufactures products in Valcourt, Quebec. Those close ties have soured since the start of President Donald Trump's second term. He placed a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel from Canada in 2025, prompting Canada to retaliate with a 25% tariff on certain American products including Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In July, the Trump administration accused Canada of discrimination and announced a 50% tariff on certain Canadian products. Large motorcycles, including the Spyder, made the list. Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 American product categories, increasing the tariff on American motorcycles to 50%. In September, the Trump administration banned large Canadian motorcycles, including Spyders, along with certain dairy products and alcohol. A statement from Bombardier Recreational Products said the immediate impact of the ban was expected to be limited, "as the vast majority of production and shipments for the current season are completed." The ban came at the end of the 2026 riding season and before the start of the 2027 season, according to Aaron Stroud, general manager of Freedom Cycle, a motorcycle dealership in Concord, N.H. It's unclear how much American manufacturers of three-wheeled motorcycles stand to benefit if the ban on Spyders turns out to be permanent. Polaris, a Minnesota company that makes the Slingshot, has lobbied heavily in Washington for tariff relief on imported components. Polaris hired Ballard Partners, which was founded by a Trump campaign-fund bundler. In a statement, Polaris said it had not lobbied for a ban: "Our energy and resources are focused on the broader policies that impact significant portions of Polaris' business."

Polaris ramps up 2027 Ranger UTV lineup with new XP 1000 Mud and Trail Boss.

Polaris ramps up 2027 Ranger UTV lineup with new XP 1000 Mud and Trail Boss. Polaris is adding more capability to its 2027 Ranger lineup, led by the all-new XP 1000 Mud Edition. Plus, the Trail Boss gets suspension upgrades, the Ranger 570 becomes the Ranger 600, and the electric Kinetic makes a comeback. Sep 8, 2026 Polaris is expanding the capability of its 2027 Ranger UTV lineup with new models and upgraded components designed to enhance ride comfort, performance and handling from the jobsite to the trails. Model revisions include the all-new Ranger XP 1000 Mud Edition, the upgraded Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar Trail Boss Edition, the reclassified Ranger 600 and returning electric Ranger Kinetic. Here's a look at the biggest changes coming to the lineup: Ranger XP 1000 Mud Edition. New for the 2027 model year is the 82-horsepower Ranger XP 1000 Mud Edition. Like the Ranger XP 1000 Premium platform it's built on, it features a restyled front end, factory-installed roof, easy-shifting transmission, power steering and 1,000-cc engine. (Shown at the top of this article.) Additional features unique to the Mud addition: * Exclusive Mud Edition color scheme, including a painted red hood and snorkel fenders, black sides and Mud decals on the front and rear. * Arched A-Arms on the front and rear to allow for more ground clearance on difficult terrain. * 29-inch Pro Armor Mud XC tires with 14 inches of ground clearance and chunky treads designed to shed mud. * A custom bumper with a high-mounted 4,500-pound winch with a synthetic rope, auto-stop and a wireless remote. * A high-mounted engine air intake and clutch inlet and outlet to prevent water from being pulled into the UTV while traversing shallow waterways. The Ranger XP 1000 Mud Edition has a 1,000-pound box capacity and a 2,500-pound towing capacity. PolarisRanger XP 1000 NorthStar Trail Boss Edition. The upgraded Trail Boss Edition, based on the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar Ultimate platform, features a fully loaded cab with a slew of standard features including doors, a roof, a front windshield and rear panel, 7-inch display with Ride Command technology, JBL audio system, a front bumper, LED headlights and a 4,500-pound winch. A blacked-out paint scheme with red accents, topography-inspired graphics and premium embroidered seats is unique to the Trail Boss model. Two drive modes are available: turf two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The second-generation shifter provides smooth gear changes. Work, standard and performance throttle modes allow drivers to fine tune the UTV to conditions. A built-in rear light illuminates the cargo box during early mornings or late nights. Additional new upgrades include: * Arched A-Arms with a Walker Evans Racing piggyback shock, allowing riders to adjust the softness or firmness of the shocks based on the vehicle capacity and trail conditions. * A needle shock borrowed from the RZR platform, designed to prevent harsh bottom-outs. Based on feedback from riders, Polaris has removed active descent control and the self-leveling rear suspension from the 2027 model year Trail Boss. "When you think about this Ranger, it's got a ton of trail-centric things that are going to make it the Trail Boss, but it also carries all the trademark Ranger features that make it a great vehicle for doing work - a huge cargo box, a 2-inch receiver on the back so you can hook up and tow and carry stuff around," said Pat McArdle, Polaris engineer and host of Polaris Shop Talk. Partner Insights Information to advance your business from industry suppliers Presented by John Deere PolarisRanger 600. Polaris has reclassified the Ranger SP 570 as the Ranger 600 for the 2027 model year. While the engine performance has not changed, the UTV has been upgraded with the easy-shifting next-generation transmission. "It's effortless to move this around," McArdle says. "You have about 50% reduction in shift effort, so you hit the right gear every time." An enhanced electronic power steering system makes turning and returning to center easier. The display has been upgraded to a four-color model for a more modern look and consistency with higher-end models in the Ranger portfolio. The Ranger 600 is also available in a NorthStar edition with an enclosed heated cab. It has a 500-pound box capacity and a 1,500-pound towing capacity. PolarisRanger XP Kinetic. Polaris' all-electric model, the Ranger Kinetic, returns to the lineup after a brief hiatus, due to high demand and customer requests. It will only be available in the Ultimate trim level with a 29.8-kWh dual-battery pack configuration for a maximum range of up to 80 miles, as well as an upgraded electrical system. The revived model will also receive the front-end updates that came to the full Ranger lineup a few years ago, including LED headlights with a charge-indicating center accent light, a full-body skid plate and full-coverage front bumper with a winch and integrated winch and plow mounts. It has a 1,250-pound box capacity and a 2,500-pound towing capacity. The Ranger Kinetic is available in Heavy Metal or Camo color schemes. Full lineup. In the Ranger lineup, Polaris also offers the Ranger 150 EFI, Ranger 500, Ranger 1000, Ranger 1000 Cab, Ranger XP 1000, Ranger XP 1000 Cab, Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar, Ranger Crew XP 1000 Texas Edition, Ranger Crew XP 1000 NorthStar Texas Edition, Ranger XD 1500 NorthStar, Ranger XD 1500 NorthStar Mountaineer Edition and Ranger Crew XD 1500 NorthStar Texas Edition.
