Requirements
  • A Bachelor's Degree in nursing.
  • Two years of acute care experience.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Knowledge of patient- and family-centered practice and the ability to convey respect and collaborate with patients, families, and designated care partners.
  • Cultural awareness and the ability to connect effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of care coordination across medical, social, economic, and other services provided by departments or facilities.
  • Knowledge of patient safety risks in healthcare environments and the ability to reduce those risks.
  • Knowledge of medication administration and prescription practices, including the ability to administer medications and prescribe drugs for continuing treatment outside the hospital.
  • Knowledge of discharge planning and the ability to arrange follow-up care based on patients' post-discharge needs.
  • Knowledge of patient assessment tools and nursing diagnosis or clinical judgment, including analyzing symptoms and developing appropriate resolutions.
  • Knowledge of health information documentation methods, including recording medical histories, symptoms, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, tests, and medical results.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • A Pennsylvania Registered Nurse license.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds, including pushing or pulling patients and performing lateral transfers.
  • Ability to stand and walk frequently to continuously, with patient care providers potentially walking 8–10 miles per shift.
  • Ability to perform role-specific physical activities including kneeling, bending, squatting, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight for patient care and nursing services on the assigned unit and shift.
  • Promote quality evidence-based care and patient satisfaction in a fiscally responsive manner.
  • Collaborate with the nurse manager on assessment and planning for nursing care.
  • Assist in leading the daily operations of the unit.
  • Act as a resource, lead, and clinical role model for the patient care team.
  • Advance and oversee patient care standards for the designated shift.
  • Facilitate and coordinate patient care delivery and flow through the continuum of care.
  • Carry out the nurse manager's responsibilities in the nurse manager's absence with guidance from the Administrative Director.
  • Recruit, interview, and select staff for the patient care unit.
  • Provide leadership and direction in implementing strategic goals and objectives.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate unit policies, procedures, and goals consistent with department and organizational goals.
  • Assist with regular performance evaluations for staff members and evaluations of new staff before completion of their probationary period.
  • Serve as a clinical resource regarding policies and procedures, patient standards, performance improvement, and risk management issues.
  • Counsel employees and use the disciplinary process as appropriate.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate staffing plans to meet patient and family care needs.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate improvement areas to increase the quality of patient and family care in collaboration with the nurse manager.
  • Identify patient-care quality issues and develop, implement, and evaluate unit improvement programs and projects within a shared governance model.
  • Manage continuous quality and regulatory directives, including JCAHO and OSHA requirements.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate the unit patient satisfaction plan.
  • Act as a clinical resource and role model for members of the healthcare team.
  • Assist professional development staff with creating and implementing educational programs.
  • Recommend, participate in developing, and implement policies and procedures.
  • Seek opportunities for nursing research.
  • Collaborate with professional development staff and the nurse manager to set minimum competencies and oversee ongoing staff professional development.
  • Manage available resources so the patient care area operates within budget limitations.
  • Develop cost-saving activities and collaborate with the nurse manager on budget forecasting.
  • Educate healthcare team members on cost-efficient care, appropriate staffing, and efficient use of material resources.
  • Monitor staff schedules to ensure adequate staffing and maintain quality patient care.
  • Authorize overtime or scheduling changes to fill shifts as necessary.
  • Complete payroll in collaboration with the nurse manager.
  • Provide staffing volumes and adjustments reflecting staffing needs within Smart Square.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistently with Jefferson's values.
  • Recognize patients and their families or designated care partners in providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care based on personal preferences, priorities, needs, cultural beliefs, and values.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective nursing-unit operations.
  • Support nursing professional development, Magnet, and Shared Governance through participation in and mentoring of colleagues on councils and the Clinical Ladder program.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in nursing.
  • One year of experience in a similar or comparable unit, with demonstrated leadership and management potential.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications based on unit requirements.
