About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering is required; a Master of Science is preferred.
  • At least 10 years of mechanical engineering experience, including significant experience with actuators, drivetrains, or complex motorized mechanical assemblies for human-interaction or safety-relevant products such as robotics, medical devices, industrial automation, or automotive.
  • A track record of owning mechanical architecture and system-level integration across subsystems, serving as the senior technical authority for a mechanical domain and making escalated decisions.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks, with strong finite element analysis, kinematics, dynamics, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and tolerance analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of sheet metal, welding, casting, computer numerical control machining, injection molding, and assembly; direct experience working with contract manufacturers and key suppliers through engineering validation test, design validation test, production validation test, and mass production.
  • A proven history of successful cost-reduction initiatives and identifying hidden cost drivers, with proficiency in cost-estimation tools such as should-cost modeling.
  • Ability and willingness to prototype, instrument, characterize, and test one's own work in a lab and on a factory floor.
  • Comfort working with Electrical, Firmware, and Controls engineers and understanding mechanical design as part of a larger electromechanical system.
  • Ability to provide technical reviews, written architectural guidance, and mentorship.
  • Ability to make tradeoff decisions with limited data, determine when to test or decide, and avoid analysis paralysis.
  • High standards for the machine's appearance, sound, and feel.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, shifting priorities in a fast-moving startup, and taking on work outside the core role when required.
  • For the NYC option, ability to work fully on-site at the NYC office; alternatively, candidates may be based in the greater Boston area and travel regularly to the NYC office.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for supplier and contract-manufacturer engagements, including international travel.

Responsibilities

  • Own the mechanical master model and drive system-level integration across the platform, ensuring actuators, drivetrain, structure, and adjacent mechanisms function as a coherent machine.
  • Make architecture-level tradeoffs involving cost, weight, acoustics, reliability, and perceived quality.
  • Lead design, analysis, prototyping, and validation of mechanical subsystems across the deployed fleet and next-generation platforms.
  • Build and test prototypes, and drive design decisions using test data and physics.
  • Set design methodology and best practices for the mechanical engineering domain, including computer-aided design standards, finite element analysis and tolerance rigor, and justification of design decisions.
  • Raise the technical bar through computer-aided design reviews, design reviews, architectural guidance, and mentorship of mechanical engineers and contractors.
  • Identify and engineer out hidden costs in design, materials, and manufacturing through strategic changes and design simplification.
  • Refine designs for manufacturability; create and optimize tooling and fixtures; and analyze and improve assembly processes for cost and quality.
  • Work with the supply chain team, contract manufacturer, and key suppliers on manufacturability and supplier selection.
  • Lead prototype builds through new product introduction and into production.
  • Produce production-transfer technical documentation, including computer-aided design files, bills of materials, drawings, and cost reports.
  • Partner with Electrical, Firmware, and Controls on motor selection, drivers, sensors, and force-controlled tuning, and with Operations and Quality on reliability, testing, and production readiness.
  • Contribute the mechanical perspective to the company's technology roadmap by researching and evaluating actuation, transmissions, sensing, and structure options for future cost and performance improvements across the product lineup.
  • Travel as needed for supplier and contract-manufacturer engagements, including international travel.

Desired Qualifications

  • A Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
