California turns more green waste into compost with expanded Republic Services organics facility.

California turns more green waste into compost with expanded Republic Services organics facility. Oct 12, 2026, 16:00 ET Keeping organic material out of landfills benefits communities, environment PHOENIX, Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Republic Services opened its newly expanded compost facility at Forward Landfill in San Joaquin County, Calif., turning more organic material into compost used throughout California's agricultural heartland. With additional processing space and upgraded infrastructure, the facility provides increased capacity to recycle food scraps and yard waste from homes and businesses. The project is part of Republic Services' growing network of organics facilities in California, helping support the state's robust climate goals. "Each truckload of food and yard waste that arrives at Forward Landfill is transformed into nutrient-rich compost that supports local farmers, landscapers and even community projects," said Chris Seney, director of Sustainability Innovation in Organics at Republic Services. "This facility represents composting on a whole different scale, with the technology and capacity to process thousands of tons of material per year." For nearly eight decades, Forward Landfill has served communities in California's Central Valley with reliable and responsible environmental services. The site continues to evolve, with a renewable energy plant, a renewable natural gas facility under development and a compost site that has served customers for years. Today, the compost facility: * * Serves thousands of homes and businesses across Northern California. * Recycles up to 147,000 tons of material annually. * Utilizes the latest technology to speed up the composting process and keep up with greater customer demand. * Supports a local circular economy by recycling yard and food waste into compost that's returned to farmers and residents. Keeping organic waste out of landfills Today, 48% of what people dispose of in California landfills is organic waste. That includes 2.5 billion meals worth of unspoiled food a year. When organic materials break down in landfills, the process creates methane emissions that can contribute to climate change. To help protect air quality and communities, Republic Services is building an innovative portfolio of organics facilities throughout California. This includes: * * 17 organics facilities, including green waste processing facilities, compost sites and commercial food waste operations. * * In 2025, 884,000 tons of food and yard waste was processed. Later this year, Republic Services will open the San Bernadino Sustainability Park, one of the nation's largest organics facilities, in San Bernardino County, Calif. The facility will have enough capacity to recycle 300,000 tons of food and green waste per year at the start, with room to double. Cultivating a sustainable future together Republic Services began planning Forward Landfill's compost site expansion in 2019. In 2023, Republic Services received $5.1 million through CalRecycle's Organics Grant Program, which helped support construction, equipment and administrative costs. The grant program is part of CalRecycle's effort to promote industry investments in clean technologies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the state. "The composting facility upgrade at Republic Services' Forward Landfill is a powerful example of how local partnerships help California cut pollution, expand organics recycling infrastructure and support a climate-safe future with technology that puts communities first," CalRecycle Director Zoe Heller said. "A local circular economy in action, this site takes in food and green waste from homes and businesses and returns finished compost back to the community to support soil health, drought resilience and local food production." "This $5 million investment is an important step forward for San Joaquin County. By expanding our composting capacity, we're strengthening essential services, supporting local businesses, and investing in a cleaner, more sustainable future for the communities we serve," said San Joaquin County Supervisor Mario Gardea. About Republic Services Republic Services, Inc. is a leader in the environmental services industry. Billionaire Mario Gabelli portfolio: A waste Management stock you shouldn't miss.

Billionaire Mario Gabelli portfolio: A waste Management stock you shouldn't miss. Published October 12, 2026 at 12:25 pm EDT - Updated October 12, 2026 at 12:34 pm EDT Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE:RSG) collects and disposes of waste in the U.S. and Canada. It is one of the 10 best stocks to buy according to billionaire Mario Gabelli's fund. Richard Chilton's Chilton Investment Company, which has about 6% of its portfolio in the stock, is the second-largest hedge fund holder in our data, behind Cliff Asness' AQR Capital Management. Republic Services is one of the 10 best stocks to buy according to billionaire Richard Chilton. Republic Services Q2 revenue rose 4.6%, and price increases drove most of it. Management raised its full-year revenue, EBITDA and cash flow guidance. The board raised the quarterly dividend by 7.2%, the 23rd straight annual increase. Recycling is the soft spot, since recycled commodities sold for less than a year ago. See how Republic Services is winning on price while volumes slip. Republic Services keeps earnings growing in weak markets because it owns the landfills and collection routes its customers depend on, so it can raise prices ahead of its costs. That steady cash flow pays for acquisitions, share buybacks and a dividend that has grown for 23 years. Management sees early signs of recovery in industrial activity and commercial construction, which would bring volume back. The London Company Income Equity Strategy bought the stock as a new holding in the second quarter after the shares fell about 8% over the prior year. See why The London Company bought it. The growth story depends on price increases, and price increases have limits. Volume fell 1.6% in the second quarter, and construction is still weak, especially in housing. Customers feel the strain from inflation, and higher fuel costs add to bills that Republic Services passes along through fuel fees. Recycled commodity prices are lower than a year ago. Higher interest rates hurt a stock like this too. The dividend yield is about 1.2%, and the 10-year Treasury yields about 5.3%. Republic Services trades at a forward P/E of 29.7, which is 59% above the sector median of 18.7 and 2.5% below its own five-year average of 30.5. The S&P 500's forward P/E is 19.0, according to FactSet. Analyst consensus has earnings per share growing about 3.6% in 2026 and 10.75% in 2027. The market's earnings grow about 10% a year over the long run, so Republic Services grows far slower than the market this year and at about the same pace in 2027, at a multiple about 56% higher. The PEG ratio, which compares the P/E to growth, is 3.53 against 1.43 for the sector. If earnings grow 10.75% a year, the P/E falls to about 24 in two years and about 22 in three, while the market stays near 19. Buyers at this price are betting that price increases keep beating costs and that earnings growth speeds up in 2027. If growth stays near 4%, a multiple near 30 is hard to defend.
