Requirements
  • Fluency in Spanish and English, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
  • Prior experience as an assignment editor, assignment manager, or in related work.
  • Solid news judgment, strong writing, and research skills.
  • Experience using online and social media resources as news research tools, including LexisNexis, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
  • Experience with newsroom computer applications.
  • A basic understanding and demonstration of editorial judgment and journalistic ethics, including current knowledge of libel and slander laws and applicable Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations.
  • A thorough understanding of satellite operations and microwave newsgathering technologies.
  • Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Willingness to work in Houston, Texas.
  • Availability for any shift in a 24/7 schedule, including long hours, weekends, and holidays with short notice.
  • A valid driver's license and excellent driving record.
Responsibilities
  • Assemble the daybook in iNews, listing story ideas and daily newsworthy events.
  • Monitor police and emergency scanners and electronic sources for news, and disseminate information to appropriate newsroom personnel.
  • Coordinate interviews and logistics for field crews.
  • Facilitate the news-gathering process and ensure comprehensive coverage of news stories across broadcast, digital, FAST channels, and web platforms.
  • Collaborate daily with producers, anchors, reporters, photographers, and other station personnel to maximize resources and provide coverage during breaking news, weather, and emergency situations.
  • Participate in editorial meetings and develop interesting story ideas using strong editorial judgment.
  • Develop enterprise story ideas consistent with the news brand.
  • Cultivate contacts important to news coverage in the Houston area.
  • Establish working relationships with public information officers for updates on significant events and incidents.
  • Monitor other local news channels and follow their coverage.
  • Produce and assist with undercover special projects during sweeps, including recording interviews remotely and in the field.
  • Support news and online platforms as assigned.
  • Publish online content when required.
  • Plan news coverage as directed by news management.
  • Keep news managers and producers informed about the progress of new stories.
  • Answer phones and take notes on viewer calls for possible story leads.
  • Edit videos for broadcast and social media.
  • Perform other duties as needed and directed by news management.
