Leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer emerges after EA closes BioWare and cancels the game

A leaked trailer for a new Mass Effect game has surfaced after EA closed BioWare, the studio behind the series. Authors Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken said they had worked on the game for years. In a memo to staff, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson said only "a small team at BioWare" was working on early development. The decision "not to move forward with this development" led to the closure. A Mass Effect streaming series announced in 2024 is still in development, IGN reported, citing sources inside Prime Video. An online petition urging EA to continue the series or license it to another studio has nearly 17,500 signatures.

BioWare closes after 30 years, next Mass Effect ends.

BioWare closes after 30 years, next Mass Effect ends. 10:29 AM October 22, 2026 MANILA, Philippines - BioWare, the studio behind Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age and Mass Effect, said on October 21 that it is closing after more than 30 years. Early development on the next Mass Effect game is ending. The announcement came as parent company Electronic Arts (EA) cuts about 400 jobs. The studio began as a side project of doctors. BioWare was founded in 1995 in Edmonton by three medical graduates of the University of Alberta, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip, who each put in C$100,000 to build their first game. Muzyka and Zeschuk later left medicine to make games full time, while Yip stayed as physician. Article continues after this advertisement What BioWare said. In a statement posted online, BioWare said it had been "a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our world to life." It listed Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem among its titles. "Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending," the statement said. The studio said its focus is on its team and on supporting one another through the transition. It ended by thanking the players for debating their choices, falling in love with the characters and making the games' worlds their own. Article continues after this advertisement What the closure means. Electronic Arts (EA) cuts amount to about 3% of its workforce, with roughly 50 Bioware employees affected. According to EA in January 2025 that Dragon Age: The Veilguard had not sold as well as expected, and Bioware shrank to fewer than 100 employees, leaving a smaller team on the next Mass Effect. A letter shared with EA employees also says the company is closing Bioware's Edmonton workspace. Article continues after this advertisement The closure follows EA's $55 billion take-private deal, led by investors including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. BioWare and EA first released a new Mass Effect at the 2020 Game Awards. Meanwhile, EA has not said what will happen to the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchise.

BioWare shuts down after more than 30 years, next Mass Effect canceled.

BioWare shuts down after more than 30 years, next Mass Effect canceled. In a nutshell * EA has confirmed the closure of BioWare after more than three decades in the games industry. * Development of the next Mass Effect RPG has been canceled while still in its early stages. * The move comes amid broader restructuring efforts at EA, which reportedly include around 400 job cuts across the company. Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare, bringing an end to one of gaming's most influential RPG studios after more than 30 years in operation. Alongside the shutdown, the publisher has also canceled development of the next Mass Effect RPG, which was reportedly still in its early stages. The announcement marks a heartbreaking moment for longtime fans, as BioWare was responsible for beloved franchises such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The studio also built its reputation on genre-defining RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, helping shape modern role-playing games as One More Game know them today. EA restructuring leads to BioWare closure. According to reports, the closure is part of a broader restructuring initiative at EA that includes approximately 400 job cuts across the company. Around 50 BioWare employees are said to be affected, while EA is also shuttering the studio's Edmonton office in Canada. In a farewell statement shared on social media, BioWare reflected on its decades-long journey and thanked both its developers and players for supporting its games throughout the years. The studio also stated that its immediate focus is helping affected employees during the transition period. Next Mass Effect will no longer continue. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the announcement is the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game. The project was first teased in 2020 and was expected to continue the beloved sci-fi RPG series. While BioWare had never revealed an official title or launch window, the studio had previously indicated that development was ongoing. Following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024, BioWare had shifted much of its focus toward the new Mass Effect project. As recently as November 2025, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble reportedly reaffirmed EA and BioWare's commitment to the franchise. However, the latest developments have brought those plans to an abrupt halt before the game could progress beyond its early development phase. Chris garcia. Editor in Chief Father. Gamer. Oprah's bestie gets up at 03.24.

Oprah's bestie gets up at 03.24. Cost-cutting package at Electronic Arts - closing Bioware. The gaming giant Electronic Arts has decided to close the studio Bioware as part of a cost-cutting package. The announcement means that development of the next installment in the game series "Mass Effect" is being discontinued. Text: TT-Bloomberg Published: 2026-10-22 The cuts span several EA-affiliated game studios and a total of 400 jobs will be eliminated. In a letter to staff, which Bloomberg has seen, EA executives David Tinson and Cam Weber write that they "over the past few months have carried out a thorough review of the business" and have decided on a number of cutbacks. These include closing Bioware, which the game studio confirms in a post on X. Bioware was bought by EA in 2007 and is behind a number of critically acclaimed role-playing game series, including "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age", but in recent years has failed to meet sales targets. EA was recently taken private from the stock exchange by a consortium that includes, among others, Saudi Arabia's state investment fund, and is burdened with large debts. TT-Bloomberg
