About the job

Requirements
  • At least 10 years of experience in merchandising, buying, or category management in retail or e-commerce, including direct people leadership.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a revenue and gross margin number, not just an assortment.
  • Experience negotiating vendor terms, walking away from bad deals, and repairing important vendor relationships.
  • Fluency with product data and catalog management, including PIM or equivalent, taxonomy, attribution, and item setup at scale.
  • Experience using AI to materially speed up a team's output, including hands-on use of AI-assisted tools such as Claude, Copilot, or BI-native AI features to automate analysis and reduce manual effort, and comfort connecting those tools to live data sources such as a data warehouse or ERP.
  • Strong analytical and financial instincts; fluency in Excel and comfort with SQL or a BI tool; ability to translate data into defensible decisions.
  • Comfort operating independently on a lean team reporting to a CEO.
Responsibilities
  • Set assortment strategy by category and price point, determining what to carry or cut, identifying gaps, and evaluating adjacent categories.
  • Run continuous assortment gap analysis using customer demand signals, search and browse behavior, unmet demand, and the competitive set, and turn findings into a prioritized vendor target list.
  • Own SKU productivity by growing the catalog where it converts and rationalizing it where it does not.
  • Define the brand's merchandising point of view so the assortment is curated rather than aggregated.
  • Source, pitch, and sign new drop-ship vendors, owning the pipeline from target list through the first live SKU.
  • Negotiate and renegotiate commercial agreements covering cost, margin, freight and delivery terms, return allowances, damage and defect responsibility, marketing and co-op funding, rebates, and exclusivity where appropriate.
  • Evaluate each vendor's true operational cost, including ship time, cancel rate, defect and damage rate, return rate, chargebacks, and support load, and reset terms or exit relationships based on performance.
  • Hold vendors to visible service-level commitments using scorecards and run quarterly business reviews with key partners.
  • Build and manage exclusive and co-developed product programs that strengthen brand differentiation and margin.
  • Represent the brand at market and trade shows and maintain an informed perspective on category trends.
  • Own catalog quality, including item setup, taxonomy, attribution, imagery, copy, dimensions, and lead-time accuracy.
  • Reduce time from signed vendor to live, sellable, well-attributed catalog and treat onboarding velocity as a merchandising metric.
  • Normalize inconsistent vendor feeds into a clean, searchable, filterable assortment, partnering with technology on systems that scale the process.
  • Partner with Site Merchandising and Marketing on category architecture, search relevance, collections, and gifting and seasonal moments.
  • Own gross margin and set category pricing strategy using competitive and marketplace intelligence; manage MAP and MSRP discipline across vendors.
  • Build the promotional calendar and secure vendor funding for promotions.
  • Partner with Finance and the CEO on the revenue and margin plan and own the merchandising levers that deliver it.
  • Report business performance, including what worked, what did not, and what should change the following month.
  • Use AI tools to automate recurring analysis and reporting and identify and roll out AI-enabled merchandising workflows for assortment gap analysis, vendor scorecarding, competitive pricing intelligence, catalog enrichment, and hindsight reviews.
  • Model AI adoption for the team and help team members use AI to improve and accelerate their work.
  • Build AI-assisted capabilities that enable non-technical merchants to make faster, better decisions without waiting on an analyst.
  • Validate AI output against source data and commercial logic before it informs decisions.
  • Build, mentor, and develop the merchandising team as the business scales.
  • Work as a peer to leaders of Marketing, Site, Operations, and Finance, and as a direct partner to the CEO.
  • Bring the merchandising perspective into company strategy rather than waiting to be given a target.
Desired Qualifications
  • Drop-ship or marketplace merchandising experience.
  • Experience in home, furniture, or home decor categories.
