About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field with 4–6+ years of relevant industry experience, or a Master of Science with 2–5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Hands-on downstream process development experience with biologics or nucleic acids, including chromatography and tangential flow filtration at bench and pilot scale.
  • Demonstrated scale-up experience and a working command of mass balance, sizing, and engineering fundamentals applied to bioprocess unit operations.
  • Direct experience transferring a process to an external manufacturing partner, including authoring transfer documentation and supporting execution on site.
  • Experience with design of experiments and statistical analysis using JMP, Design-Expert, or equivalent.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to influence technical outcomes at a partner site without direct authority.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize downstream unit operations for mRNA drug substance, including DNase treatment and reaction quench, clarification and depth filtration, chromatographic capture and polishing, precipitation-based purification, tangential flow filtration/ultrafiltration and diafiltration, and sterile filtration.
  • Screen and select resins, membranes, filters, and single-use components; define binding capacity, loading, buffer, and elution conditions; and generate supporting data.
  • Develop impurity-clearance strategies with defined log or fold reduction for double-stranded RNA, residual template DNA, protein and enzyme, residual nucleotides and small molecules, endotoxin, and truncated or aggregated RNA species.
  • Address mRNA-specific downstream challenges including viscosity at high concentration, shear sensitivity, aggregation and high-molecular-weight species formation, membrane fouling, and product loss across the process train.
  • Assist in building scale-up and scale-down models; define scaling parameters, sizing bases, and hold and hydraulic constraints for each unit operation.
  • Perform mass balance, yield accounting, and process-fit analysis against each contract development and manufacturing organization's actual equipment trains, single-use platforms, and facility constraints; identify early where the process must be adapted or the site is not a fit.
  • Contribute to contract development and manufacturing organization technical assessment and selection, including capability gap analysis, equipment and automation compatibility, analytical readiness, and capacity.
  • Design the process to be transferable by favoring platform-standard equipment, commercially available consumables with second sources, and operating ranges that can be maintained at a site outside the company's control.
  • Own downstream technology transfer to contract development and manufacturing organizations end to end, including transfer packages, process descriptions, scale-appropriate parameter tables, risk assessments, gap analyses, and resolution of site-specific questions.
  • Review and approve partner-generated batch records, protocols, sampling plans, and engineering run plans; maintain critical parameters while accommodating site practices where appropriate.
  • Assist with technical readiness for engineering, toxicology, and good manufacturing practice campaigns; conduct pre-campaign risk reviews and define decision criteria and escalation paths before batches start.
  • Serve as person-in-plant at partner sites by reviewing real-time data, providing in-process decision support, and troubleshooting during execution.
  • Drive post-campaign activities, including batch data review, yield and impurity reconciliation against the model, deviation investigations, corrective and preventive action input, and process improvements for subsequent campaigns.
  • Support commercial and quality colleagues on technical content for statements of work, change controls, quality agreements, and technology transfer timelines.
  • Partner with upstream and in vitro transcription process development to co-optimize the process, particularly where reaction conditions affect downstream burden.
  • Work with Analytical Development on method suitability, sample plans, method transfer to the contract development and manufacturing organization, and interpretation of purity and integrity data.
  • Interface with Formulation/Lipid Nanoparticle teams on drug substance attributes that affect drug product performance, and with Supply Chain on raw material and consumable lead times, second sourcing, and partner procurement timelines.
  • Present development and campaign data at program and platform forums.
Desired Qualifications
  • Direct mRNA, plasmid DNA, or oligonucleotide downstream experience, including oligo-dT affinity capture and double-stranded RNA clearance.
  • Multiple completed good manufacturing practice campaigns at contract development and manufacturing organizations in a person-in-plant or technical lead capacity.
  • Experience with process characterization supporting late-phase development or Biologics License Application filing.
  • Familiarity with single-use technology selection, extractables and leachables considerations, and partner-site automation or recipe configuration.
  • Understanding of lipid nanoparticle formulation and drug product manufacturing as constraints on drug substance specifications.

About the company

CRISPR Therapeutics develops gene-editing medicines using CRISPR/Cas9 to treat serious diseases. It edits genes in human cells, either ex vivo or in vivo, to correct disease-causing mutations, focusing on sickle cell disease, cancer, and other genetically defined conditions. The company supports its pipeline through partnerships and licensing in addition to internal R&D and clinical work, rather than relying solely on in-house development. Its goal is to deliver durable, disease-modifying therapies that meet unmet medical needs for patients worldwide through a global biopharmaceutical strategy.

What believers are saying

  • FDA approved CASGEVY for children age 2+, expanding eligibility by roughly 5,500 patients.
  • Germany reimbursement on May 6, 2026 broadens access and supports European uptake.
  • Phase 1 starts for CTX340 and CTX460 create multiple new catalysts in 2026.

What critics are saying

  • CASGEVY revenue was only $76 million in Q2 2026, while losses hit $91.2 million.
  • Broad won another March 2026 PTAB ruling; CRISPR's CRISPR-Cas9 foundation remains legally fragile.
  • If slow patient starts persist through 2027, CRISPR's cash burn outlives CASGEVY commercialization.

What makes CRISPR Therapeutics unique

  • CASGEVY is the first approved CRISPR/Cas9 therapy, with 39-country authorization by August 2026.
  • CRISPR built a deep in vivo pipeline: CTX310, CTX340, CTX321, and CTX460.
  • Vertex partnership monetizes CASGEVY globally, while CRISPR retains exposure to upside royalties.
