About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Meta offers higher yields on $15B bond sale as investors tire of Big Tech AI debt

Meta is selling at least $15B of US dollar bonds, its first debt sale in six months, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The two-currency deal is expected to raise at least $20B and includes Meta's first euro-denominated note, which could be sold as soon as Wednesday. Meta is paying more to draw buyers. Its 30-year bonds are being discussed at about 2.5 percentage points above US government debt, nearly 0.9 points more than early pricing on a similar April bond. Investors are wary. "We see no need to chase it in the new issue market," said Ross Pamphilon of Impax Asset Management. Big Tech has sold almost $430B of high-grade bonds since last year. Last week, Meta priced $25B of common stock and $12.5B of preferred shares, and SP cut its outlook on Meta's credit rating on Friday over its AI spending.

Meta stock lags the market, but analysts see 39.6% upside with $858 mean target

The mean price target is $858.25, 39.6% above the current price. The Street-high target of $1,050 implies 70.7% upside. On October 28, John Blackledge of TD Cowen kept a "Buy" rating with an $850 target. Meta, valued at $1.6 trillion, has fallen 7.7% over the past year, while the S&P 500 rose nearly 11.1%. After third-quarter results on October 21, its shares closed down 7% the next session. Revenue was $64.6 billion, beating forecasts of $63.4 billion. Meta expects fourth-quarter revenue of $73 billion to $76 billion.

Big Tech capex hits $201.9B as free cash flow turns negative, fuelling stock sell-off

Big Tech's spending on artificial intelligence is outrunning its cash, and investors are reacting. The combined capital expenditure of Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft rose $36.9 billion in the third quarter to $201.9 billion, The Kobeissi Letter calculated. That is up 356% since the first quarter of 2024. Over the same period, the four companies' combined free cash flow fell $33.1 billion to a negative $26.4 billion, a record low. Only Microsoft reported positive free cash flow. The strategists estimate the group will spend another $232 billion in the fourth quarter. On Friday, more than $1 trillion in market value was wiped out of the AI trade. "The AI narrative is cracking as profitability concerns intensify," said Matt Maley, chief markets strategist at Miller Tabak.

Meta stock down 15% in October as $97.5B equity raise and margin squeeze fuel 30% fall fears

Meta Platforms shares fell 15.3% between October 1 and October 30, 2026, while the S&P 500 slipped 1.1%. The stock has lost 30% or more in three of 11 market shocks since 2012, including a 71% drop in 2022. Meta has recovered from all 11 falls, taking a median of 1.8 months to regain its earlier peak. The 2022 fall took 12.8 months. Revenue grew 26.1% in the third quarter, but operating margin halved to 20.1% from 40.1%. A $9.9 billion legal charge cut the margin by about 15 points. Total debt rose to $115 billion from $51.1 billion a year earlier. Meta plans to raise up to $97.5 billion by selling stock to fund its AI build-out, and S&P revised its outlook on the company to negative.

Meta's ad revenue jumps 26% to $63.1B as AI chatbots slow Google search growth to 12%

Meta's ad revenue rose 26% in the third quarter to $63.1 billion, while Google's search unit grew 12% to $63.4 billion. The 14-point gap is the widest in Meta's favour since 2021. Meta says AI is improving its ad targeting tools across Facebook and Instagram. Google faces a threat as chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta's Muse draw users away from clicking search links. "That's potentially catastrophic for Google's ad business," said Nate Elliott, an analyst at Emarketer. Alphabet shares fell more than 12% after earnings, wiping out about $500 billion in market value. Meta's stock dropped 14% in October. Both companies plan heavy AI spending: Google up to $205 billion this year, Meta up to $145 billion.
