Citi and Coinbase have expanded their partnership to bridge traditional banking and digital payments. The collaboration introduces two initiatives: Coinbase Virtual Accounts, which uses Citi's Banking-as-a-Service infrastructure to provide bank-account-like functionality with automatic fiat-to-stablecoin conversion, and merchant stablecoin acceptance through Citi's Spring platform, powered by Coinbase Payments. The solutions allow businesses to operate between traditional and digital finance without building separate infrastructure. Merchants can accept payments from over 150 million stablecoin holders globally, with automatic conversion to fiat. Citi serves as the bank of record for settlements. Launching initially in the United States, the partnership aims to enable interoperability between fiat and digital payments. Citi moves approximately $6 trillion daily and banks 90% of top e-commerce companies and 15 of the world's 20 largest fintechs.
Citi, Mastercard and the FinTech Association of Hong Kong co-hosted their third annual fintech forum in Hong Kong, focusing on agentic AI in financial services. International Payments Identity has raised $16 million in Series A funding led by Foundation Capital, with participation from Citi, HSBC, and existing investors. The payment intelligence firm addresses insufficient payment verification as digital transactions accelerate globally. IPID highlights that information flow lags behind payment system advancements, leaving institutions uncertain about recipients. This verification gap increases fraud vulnerability, with losses projected to reach $331 billion by 2027. The company currently operates bank account verification across more than 50 countries and plans to expand into US payments and digital assets. The funding will strengthen its global network and improve payment decision-making capabilities for financial institutions.

Citi is launching an advertising business called Citi Commerce Media, allowing brands to target its 70 million customers based on spending data from 6.5 billion annual transactions across 700 categories. The bank will display ads on its app, website, and external platforms like Facebook. Citi joins a growing field of financial media networks. JPMorgan Chase and PayPal launched similar businesses in 2024, followed by Mastercard and American Express in 2025. EMARKETER forecasts US financial media network ad spending will exceed $1 billion by 2026. A pilot programme with retail and beauty brands showed campaigns produced an average 15% spending lift compared to customers not shown ads. Citi recently agreed to acquire Kard, a commerce media platform, to access merchant networks.
